Sanjay Gupta, CNN, July 6, 2010:

Might BP be trying to hide the risk to cleanup workers? …

Louisiana’s Health Department has reported 128 cleanup workers who have been sickened.

State clinics are telling us something else as well, that cleanup workers are being told to report to BP’s own health clinic on Grand Isle, not to go to state facilities.

Maybe BP is trying to control costs by having people not go to over charging state hospitals. Just a thought.

It's more than likely the toxic dispersant chemicals they use.

Oil rig workers have coexisted with the stuff that comes out of the ground (except the hydrogen sulfide) for years.

You get the error message ("connection was reset") that makes it look like it didn't get through.

Isn’t it odd that the Federal government in the form of the Coast Guard, EPA, OSHA and Dept of Homeland Security is constantly second guessing and preventing prevention and clean up efforts by Louisiana and Mississippi but BP can pretty much do whatever it wants without government oversight. BP = large campaign contributor to 0bama 2008 and LA and MS voted for McCain. Just saying.

Yes, as other have said. BP has paid to set up field medical facilities with people trained in oil spill cleanup illnesses and injuries.

So it is no conspiracy to have the injured and sick go to these facilities rather than some public facility where BP doesn’t have medical coverage.

It’s also perfectly normal for nosy reporters to be told to stay 60 feet from operating cleanup vehicles, so they don’t cause accidents.

Wouldn’t trust anything by Sanjay Gupta — Obama was going to make him US Surgeon General than Gupta declined supposedly due to family commitments. No matter his medical qualifications, he obviously is an Obama man and anti-corporations/business with his statement implying BP is trying to hide something.

Regarding the crux of the story, it makes more sense for workers to go to a facility which has all the tools and equipment to diagnose and treat oil spill-related symptoms than to any number of other facilities. I don’t see anything sinister here.

Having said that, fumes from thick oil can cause headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Most symptoms can be prevented with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) especially air purifying respirators which remove organic fumes. Usually symptoms disappear if the worker is removed to a fresh air environment for several hours or maybe a day.

I'm sure that BP realizes that anyone involved will forever be tied to this. People getting any illness whatsoever in the next 40 years will be able to sue.

The hospitals are not qualified to treat them, so why go there? BP’s clinics are staffed with the best experts.

"Maybe BP is trying to control costs by having people not go to over charging state hospitals. Just a thought."

A more likely explanation is that BP's Grand Isle location is staffed with people specially trained to diagnose and treat chemical exposures. Most state hospitals do not have people with such expertise, but the clinics of all the major petrochem plants do.

I have not read that BP is keeping workers from wearing protective gear. What kind of gear do you need for picking up tar from the beach? Just wondering.

http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/rkistner/fishermen_say_bp_not_allowing.html

It isn’t just picking up tar from the beach, there are workers out in the water off shore too from boats etc. The dispersant is the problem and the concern is air quality and the need to wear respirators of some sort.

Not only are they not being issued, but there are claims the workers aren’t even allowed to bring their own because of the image.

BP has a long history of compassion for the sick—like the Locerbie bomber. When I see all the boohooing for BP in Republican circles, I think of that. Sometimes big corporations really are run by greedy slimebags, such as in this case.

BP has the responsibility, both legally, and morally to handle it, and they also have the expertise. They deal with chemical contamination on a daily basis.

I’d trust them long before trusting government, or just any old emergency room (I know how they work, and I never go there anymore)

I’m going to demand that you either support that ridiculuos charge or have the mods remove it.

I’ve done lots of work in oil and chemical plants over the years, and they not only allowed the use of protective gear, but they also pay subcontractors to take classes in their use, and to take medical exams to be sure that you are physically fit to work under the hazards that exist in their plants.

What you are saying just doesn’t jibe with my considerable experience.

"The dispersant is the problem and the concern is air quality and the need to wear respirators of some sort."

Nope. Not so. The EPA is constantly monitoring at multiple sites all along the coast, in both air and water, and NO dispersant has been detected in either (with a lower detection limit of 500 ppb).

All the historical data on dispersant monitoring and all the other potential toxics is at the EPA's "Deepwater Horizon Response" website.

“””While this is important information to have, additional testing is needed to further inform the use of dispersants. The next phase of EPA’s testing will assess at the acute toxicity of multiple concentrations of Louisiana Sweet Crude Oil alone and combinations of Louisiana Sweet Crude Oil with each of the eight dispersants for two test species.””””

Hmmm....

They backed EVIL INCARNATE obama for President and they gave him 1 MILLION dollar$ for is 2008 PAC... they want one to sign away all of their rights to revisit liability if you accept their little pittance of a settlement, including the right to sue them later if needed... they are lying in every ad that they put on TV today... trying to salvage their reputation and they knew 6 months before the well blew out that they had problems and they worked the system so that they did not have to deal with those problems... thereby saving themselves millions... and see what that has brought to us. They are evil because their company supports and enables the evil that is destroying every facet of the American Dream. Evil is as evil does... and BP is plenty evil.

Once again, CNN is catching up.

I heard about this last week. It was part of BP’s assurance that they would take care of the bills.

It is only logical that they would want to ensure they are not getting ripped off.

It may also be that this allows them control over the exposure of the ‘facts’ to the public. Once again, that is how most corporations and politicians work together to deal with a large scale situation.

So far, I see nothing that BP has been doing SINCE the spill, that does not seem logical nor necessary.

Most of the time issues such as the subject of this article are just the MEDIA and GOVERNMENT trying to divert you from noticing that they enabled this whole mess, and don’t have the leadership or skills to deal with it in a timely fashion.
