New Mexico has settled a lawsuit filed by advocacy groups last year over compliance with a law that lets people register to vote at various state agencies, including the Motor Vehicle Division when they get a driver's license.

The settlement will result in tens of thousands of people in the state being offered a chance to register to vote. ...

"The voter registration application needs to be a simultaneous part of every application for a driver's license ..." said Nicole Kovite, who heads the public agency voter registration project for Washington, D.C.-based Project Vote.

That would have been the case if Congress had not extended the date for driver license compliance. The date is now March 11, 2011. See:

So, do you think that if I travel abroad (State to State) I should take my Passport in addition to my NM Driver’s License?

A passport was a suggestion from the folks at the DMV in Phoenix. Seriesly. Also, you know how many folks in the US have thought for years that New Mexico was a foreign country.

One would think American citizens and legal immigrants would be a little bullshit about their licenses not being a valid ID to transfer to another state or being able to board an airline?
