J. D. Hayworth's First Advertisement

An email from the Hayworth campaign today featured his first TV advertisement featuring his wife Mary Hayworth. She hits McCain pretty good, and truthfully, mentioning how he's sold out Arizona on immigration, bailouts and tax increases. And, she hits McCain pretty hard for his negative ads directed at JD for the past few months.

TOPICS: News/Current Events; Politics/Elections; US: Arizona
KEYWORDS: hayworth; mccain; mclame; senate
A TV ad from JD, and hopefully he's be able to answer McCain from now until the vote on August 24th.

Pray for Hayworth and pray for America that John McCain is defeated. Wolves in sheep’s clothing like McCain are even more dangerous than Obama.

A good ad to get JD started responding to Juan. And I hope JD has the funds to keep the ads going until August 24th. Juan’s election year flips/flops and attacks of amnesia, and all his liberal stands over, especially the past decade, have provided JD with a gold mine of material to air on Arizona TV.

I don’t think this race is over by any means, with debates on July 16 and 17, and the rich possibilities in contrasting Juan records and JD’s record on issues which loom very large for the rest of Obama’s term, I think the next seven weeks will determine the outcome, and not all Juan’s mudslinging of the past six months.

McCain has been running ads for 2 months defining JD as a pork barrel spender, lobbiest, and infomercial huckster...JD trots out the one person who can't be forced to testify against him.

LOL :)

According to McCain spokesperson Brian Rogers the ad buy is only $2,100 and only on Fox News. It's 3 weeks from early voting. This is a limp and tardy response.

I guess JD didn't think he should introduce himself to the voters of AZ in his first TV buy. Mary Hayworth's counter argument that the allegations are all lies and JD's "not perfect" were reminiscent of an Elizabeth Edwards press conference.

pathetic

Also, according to McCain spokesmen, McCain couldn't even pick out the guy in a lineup who gave him $1.1 million, and who Juan appears with in a video, and in photos, and who is now a convicted felon.

Lol, McCain and other lying politicians love people like you, people so easy to hoodwink they believe what their campaign spokesmen say.

And do you believe Juan now wants to secure the border, and that he opposes amnesty???

Pathetic!

Now, get busy telling people about Juan's new immigration policies.

My family lives in Tucson. They are big TV watchers and have not seen a SINGLE Hayworth ad. Meanwhile, McLame is carpet bombing with negative ads on Hayworth.

When the heck is Hayworth going to start advertising? He has money. I read a while back that he raised $1 Million in a week.

I sent a contribution to Hayworth but I stopped. Hayworth is running a terrible campaign. You cannot let your opponent define you in the minds of the voters.

Sigh. It looks like McLame is going to pull it out. I cannot stand him but Hayworth has let him paint him as a 'huckster' (which McLame repeats endlessly in his ads)

You cannot let your opponent define you in the minds of the voters.

Unless a challenger challenging an entrenched incumbent is independently wealthy like Whitman or Fiorina, they will never be able to match an incumbent in advertising. McCain had millions from his years of fundraising among the big corporate and private donors. McCain has been spending that money all year, and no challenger who's had to raise his own money could have matched that.

JD has raised $2 million and is working on a third. You're out of touch with reality if you think JD just let Juan go unanswered all these months because he's running a poor campaign. It's all about money, and JD has raised a lot for a challenger in a state the size of Arizona. And he's had damned little help from prominent 'conservatives' outside of Mark Levin, Rusty Humphries and a very few others.

Some on here who live in Arizona have said JD's campaign has become much more active. There are still seven weeks to go, and it has been JD's plan to save his funds for use starting in July.

Two debates will be held on July 16 and 17. Early voting starts in late July. I expect the campaign will be decided by the two debates and the campaigning from then until August 24th.

This campaign seems like it's been going forever. Some of us have been trying to keep track of it since late 2009, before JD even announced. It's really unusual to keep close track of a senate race for that long, and Arizona has one of the later primary voting days. The unusual interest in this race and the late voting day has made a lot of us feel impatient, but a lot can happen in the next seven weeks.

I’m Sarah Palin, and I believe the best is yet to come for Alaska. I’m running for governor because I want to deliver the best to Alaskans now, not later. I’ll put new energy into a gas line contract that puts Alaska first, and puts Alaskans to work with fiscal responsibility. We’ll forward-fund education and build an infrastructure for progress and opportunity. Alaska has a lot riding on this election, including the trust of future generations. We won’t let them down.
That is Palin's first TV ad in AK. It's effective as hell.

JD needed to introduce himself and offer an alternative to McCain's negative ad narrative. He instead reminded everybody of the ads they have seen over and over for months in the first, second, third, fifth, and seventh sentences.

1 Tired of John McCain's negative ads?
2 So am I.
3 I'm Mary Hayworth, and John McCain is hiding his record behind false attacks on my husband.
4 John McCain has sold out the people of AZ on immigration, bailouts, and tax increases.
5 Now John McCain has embraced character assassination to keep his job.
6 John McCain should be ashamed.
7 JD's not perfect, but he is a principled conservative.

John McCain is named 5 times - JD once. The guy who wrote this ad should get a bonus from McCain. No defense except "McCain's lyin'!" and 3 attacks in sentence 4. McCain's pro-immigration and anti-Bush tax cuts stance were known in 2004 when 77% of AZ voters re-elected McCain to the Senate.

The last line is too funny. JD's not perfect...there's a ringing endorsement! It's also funny she has to tell us he's a conservative. JD is fighting for the conservative vote when John McCain(say it five times) is his opponent. Conservatives hate McCain. JD should have the conservative vote already.

Somewhere along the line you missed the unfortunate fact that negative ads work. McCain has been running negative ads for a few months. JD should have responded to McCain’s lying and flip/flopping, and he should run many ads showing McCain saying one thing and then another on the same issue, such as amnesty and border enforcement.

What Palin did in Alaska is irrelevant. This is a different campaign. Part of a campaign is responding to an opponent’s smears and lies and part of it is putting out a positive message about your stance on the issues. With all his millions, McCain at the outset turned this into a negative campaign, and JD would be foolish to not respond to McCain lies and distortions.

"JD has raised $2 million and is working on a third. You're out of touch with reality if you think JD just let Juan go unanswered all these months because he's running a poor campaign."

Then why did he do it? At the outset, Hayworth was unknown to most AZ voters. My family are not activists like me and the first they ever heard of Hayworth was in McCain's ads. First impressions count and are hard to undo.

Why is Hayworth sitting on all that money? As I mentioned, I sent him money and I will not send him any more unless he spends some of what I sent already.

Again, let me be clear that i despise McLame and I hope Hayworth wins. But at present I am really disappointed.

Then why did he do it?

Because McCain had the money to start running ads back in February, as soon as JD announced. Juan had millions from previous contributions. JD didn't have money to start running TV ads five or six months ago. No challenger but an independently wealthy individual could have matched Juan's early campaign spending.

Call the JD campaign and ask what their game plan is from here on out. Still six weeks and a few days to go, and the two debates are July 16 and July 17, with early voting starting July 29.
