Troops get 'don't ask, don't tell' surveys (in the mail)

WASHINGTON, July 8 (UPI) -- A survey seeking U.S. troops' views on the impact of ending a policy barring homosexuals from openly serving in the military is being sent, the Pentagon said.

The more than 100-question survey was being sent to 200,000 active-duty troops and 200,000 members of reserve forces, CNN reported Thursday.

Among other things, the survey asks about issues such as how morale or readiness may be affected if a commander is thought to be gay or lesbian, the need to maintain personal conduct standards and how a repeal may affect one's willingness to serve in the military.

The survey also asks questions designed to identify problems that may arise when troops live and work closely in overseas war zones and about reactions to dealing with same-sex partners in social situations.

Pentagon officials also discussed the repeal in private meetings with troops. Results aren't expected until the end of the year, officials said.

The Pentagon established a team to conduct the survey earlier this year to determine the impact of the repeal. President Barack Obama, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Michael Mullen back a repeal of the current policy.

A senior military official with knowledge of the process told CNN the Defense Department said it needs until the end of 2010 to figure out how to implement a repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" because of housing, medical and marriage benefits, and the issue of reinstating gay soldiers discharged under the policy.

The House of Representatives in May approved a plan that would repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy after the military's internal review is finished, and Obama, Gates, and Mullen sign off on the policy change. The Senate did not pass the measure.

Freepers should be writing every military member active and reserve that they know.

This generation has been woefully prepared to answer the tough questions about homosexuality. Many don’t know what makes same-sex marriage wrong or what makes homosexuality dangerous.

They been propagandized and taught by the media.

1. The CDC will not allow gays to give blood to civilians even if the incident was 33 years ago. This ruling was just reaffirmed 3 weeks ago.

2. Soldier blood comes from soldiers. Soldier first aid comes from soldiers.

3. Do you want your roommate looking you over as a target for sexual conquest? In your room; in the shower; etc.

4. If male female sex is natural, and it is, what else will someone do who practices the unnatural in one area?

Repeal of DADT will weaken the military - but I guess that's what the Obama Regime wants anyway.

I wouldn’t sweat this survey. I would worry more about the Ubama scumbags who will be reporting the results of the survey (ie., “counting” the votes). Soldiers, sailors, and Marines will dispense with this silly idiocy quickly - - answer the questions and be done with it. Even little children know naturally what kind of sexual behavior gives them the creeps, and all the propaganda in the world can’t change that.

I have a feeling we won’t be hearing much about this “survey”. The results will quietly be buried if they can’t be twisted by the liberal Ubama crowd.

On the Air Force portal there is a confidential conference link allowing for us to leave comments and ideas. I am doing so daily. In this so-called “conversation” on the issue the militant left has made sure of one thing...no honesty.
Homosexuals in this fight are being allowed to frame the debate. The FALSE claim of homosexuality being a trait you are born with is being peddled just as if the “science was settled” on the issue. Not only is it NOT settled but it is clearly against them.

I sent my leadership and the feedback channels the web site of Exodus international. I wanted them to at least acknowledge that millions have LEFT homosexuality. It begs the question against the bully tactics of shutting off debate on the issue.

Openly serving gays will make the single greatest strike against our military ever forced upon us. Imagine the accommodations required, imagine the hostility by many of them accusing heterosexuals of bias and the same by heterosexuals against them. It will be a bad deal for all and done so on emotional alone, not logic, facts or needs of the organization.

The leftist marxists of our nation are purposefully using this venue to gain what the militant left homosexuals want...FORCED legitimization by government. It will cause the constitutionally protected freedom of religion to be eliminated which is also a goal.

I mostly agree. I do think we should educate the conservative view especially to our younger troops. Most have been thoroughly propagandized by the media since youth on this subject.

You are dead on about the results. Conservatives should demand access to ALL raw data. Period.

In this era of huge unsustainable deficits I’m SURE this is a wise use of tax dollars, especially since it will be ignored unless it gives the pre-approved result anyway.

If I was still in I would do everything I could to avoid doing that survey as it could mean retaliation in the future for my answers. I thought the repeal of DADT was already a done deal.

They should fill it out anyway. There will be retaliation anyway.

You make a great point, though, and this should be another battlecry:

No member should be able to be identified by virtue of any answers given on this survey. Asking an age, sex, dob, location, a rank, and an MOS pretty well narrows it down as to who is filling out any given military survey.

The more than 100-question survey . .

Well, that ensures most troops won't fill that survey out. Who has time for a 100+ question survey? Just ask "Do you support the don't ask - don't tell policy".

How much confidentiality will there be in completing this survey? Will there be unit or command pressure to fill out questions a certain way? Will surveys be collected from groups in an open setting? etc. etc.

Right...question #1 Why do you hate people who aren’t like you?

After DADT is rescinded, next year there will be the RDADT (Reverse Don’t Ask Don’t Tell)

You’re allowed to stay in the military even if you think homosexuality is a filthy habit so long as you: “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”

Slam the idea, and make sure you peers return the form, especially those who intend to make the service a career and are not on the college plan.

Interesting. Are the comments being censored? My experience has been that the Navy has gone PC but the Air Force is remaining conservative (i.e. reflecting traditional American values).

Ahhh...time for a little Sergeants Time persuasion. My fear is that the unit sodomite will help fill it out for them.

Another thing about this is that it is being mailed to the troops. Guess the military is helping bail out the post office. All other surveys have been online with links sent to individual soldiers.

You don’t see any comments. they are apparently using the system for people to send information, thoughts, or research to the people who have been commissioned by Gates to look at DADT. I comment there every day. They will not allow any personal information on the posts.

Some of what I have said includes looking at the fact of no scientific support to inate characteristic of homosexuality. I have asked for evidence of it and demanded them to acknowledge that they will forcibly change much of our military on this issue should they change the policy and for what? A lie? An emotional reaction? I wish nothing bad for ANY gay person whatsoever, but I will not stand for a paradigm shift of this magnitude over politics, emotion and LIES!
