Marines: Chinese LPD Unleashed Against Pirates
Strategy Page ^ | July 8th, 2010

China is sending one of its largest surface ships, the 210 meter (689 foot) long 071 class LPD Kunlan Shan, to join the anti-piracy patrol off Somalia. The first 071 class ship entered service over two years ago. These LPDs are 20,000 ton amphibious ships with a flight deck for up to four helicopters and a well in the rear for landing craft. It normally carries four hovercraft in the well and two smaller landing craft suspended on davits. The ship can carry up to 800 troops (500 is more common) and up to 20 armored vehicles. The 071 class ships are similar to the American 25,000 ton San Antonio class or the French 21,500 ton Mistral class. The 071's have the smallest crew (120), compared to 180 in the Mistral and 396 for the San Antonio.

Let the Chinese kill em all. Just like in the global business community where they operate in winner take all. So let it be that they treat the pirates as what they are. Murdering thugs who need to be killed.

Only 120 crew to man a 20,000 ton ship?

Very lean and unlike the Chinese.

No not shark food. This is not a sea assault vessel.

This ship is designed to attack with an assault force, fixed locations.

They are likely going to do what should have been done from day one and hit them on land. They will become lion food.

Somebody made somebody mad.

They learn fast.

And are not tooooooo proud to learn from anyone—particularly as long as they can make it seem like they came up with it. LOL.

You’re probably right on the nature of the ship itself.

But one thing I notice about the Chinese. Although they are “solidly assertive” of whatever it is they want to do, they are not militarily aggressive outside their borders. They are commercially aggressive, no question about it. Oh, for sure, they thrash Tibet, and I’m sorry to see that. But I would be more than a little surprised if, in response to a sea attack by pirates on a Chinese flagged commercial vessel, they attacked Mogadishu or whatever seashore town they believed the pirates were based in. They could, they might. I’d more tend to think they’d train that 5” deck gun on any attacking boat, though, and drill it.

If they really did make someone mad. The Chinese may send in a team to kill a specific guy and his crew. If they do land, I highly suspect that we would never hear a word about it.

As far as the nature of the vessel, if you have 500 to 800 troops on board, the last thing you want is a battle at sea. Most likely the ship will have a couple of destroyers along with it for just that reason.

This ship is designed to deliver soldiers to a beach.

They might try, their ship recognition is not all that good, and the profile is sorta

If would-be victim ships began to do just that, the pirates would give it up, quickly.

Saves a lot of billets when you don't have to staff a hospital.

China actually has ‘economic’ interests to protect, that pays the bills for their expanding military. We used to be like that.

If the ChiComms try a landing, half the force will lose its way using ChiComm positioning crap and land in Disneyland, and the other half will misread the Chinglish instructions for steering the ship and beach it in the Sahara desert.

This will be a “ Base Ship”- few troops.
They will now be able to cover a much larger area with their helicopters. Since they have a Well Deck- probably bring along some high speed small boats for interdiction.
make a good addition to the coalition of current ships.
(even though they will probably be protecting their own cargo ships.)

When the Iranians close off the oil tanker route, even the Chinese will respond. Thanks shield.

Raids of Reprisal.

If I were the Chinese. I would be sending that ship for the purpose of launching one or more amphibious assaults on the Somali coast.

Four reasons:

a) it’s the right way to deal with the pirate problem.

b) China has built lots of economic ties in africa, showing some teeth will remind the africans to play “fair”.

c) a succesful military landing will send a strong message to Tiawan

d) it’s how you prove you are a world power.

that said, the ship was probably chosen because it is one of the few ships in the chinese navy with the range to get to Somalia.

But if I was Admiral Rack-of-Trust of the PLA Navy... I would be sending Chinese marines ashore to shoot people and blow things up for the four reasons listed above.

I bet they’re using this as a means of testing their troop’s abilities in a high risk, high pressure battlefield. They aren’t attacking over war/terrorism, but going after the root of the problem, the source of the issue.

"We must find appropriate live target to test anti-ship upgrade of Type 730 Close-In Weapon System"

(And yes, the 730 is a copy of the Thales Goalkeeper, so the Chicoms have ripped of the GAU-8 Avenger from the A-10.

No, you don’t get it.

The ChiComm equipment is crap. The typical Chinaman in Commie China couldn’t find his way across the street with a red light, a crossing guard, flares and crosswalk. He’d need a seeing eye dog, too.

I’ve worked with ChiComms for more than 30 years, and there is not a more stupid lot of people on Earth than the typical ChiComm moron.

If we need to fight another war, may it be against every drooling, blithering, sub-40 IQ ChiCommidiots.
