There have only been six African-Americans in the United States Senate in history, and two Hiram Revels and Blanche Bruce served Mississippi during Reconstruction as appointed Senators.
In modern times, four African Americans Edward Brooke (1967-79) of Massachusetts, Carol Mosley Braun of Illinois (1993-99), Barack Obama (2005-08) of Illinois, and Roland Burris (2009-10) of Illinois have served, and each has been the lone African-American Senator serving at that point. Braun, Obama and Burris all held the same seat, with Braun winning it during the Year of the Woman in 1992, Obama winning it in 2004 before winning the Presidency in 2008, and Burris now holding it as an appointed Senator who will not run for re-election.
Though former Urban League executive Cheryle Jackson valiantly attempted to succeed Burris, and garnered 21 percent of the vote, there is no African American in the final running for the Illinois Senate seat.
Will the Senate return to its usual lily-white state (it has been segregated longer than it has had an African-American presence) after the 2010 election? That depends on whether Congressman Kendrick Meek (D-Fla.) is able to prevail in his Florida primary on August 24. While former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden have held fundraisers for Meek, Meek is not the frontrunner in his primary. Indeed, some say that Meek has garnered insufficient Democratic support and that at the rate the race is going, the state that President Obama won in 2008 may be the site of a Republican victory this year.

This is the mentality; hard to find a "Senator" candidate amongst these folks, doncha think?
When the chips are down in my life, I work to make it better. Instead of whining and doing nothing.
It’s always a liberal who asks the question
“where are the black people?”
How racist of her to notice.
Clarance Thomas was a "sexual harasser" and an "Uncle Tom". The Stalinists on the Left are vile/evil.
They obviously didn’t pay attention to the people seated in the Bush Cabinet.
I do believe there are racial overtones lurking in that question.
Its amazing how many black GOP US representatives there are in history but even more amazing is the success the democrats have had at convincing stupid people otherwise.
There were elected black officials like judges and state representatives all the way back to George Washington’s day.
I really don’t care...........as long as the person can do the job, cares more about the country in general, rather than his race, is honest and cuts spending by 50%.
During that time frame all Senators were appointed.
Anything spewed out of Julianne Malveaux’s mouth is always racist, she and Eugene Robinson can go fly a kite. I don’t care anymore.
If only values over blood could be the issue here.... But this is, after all, about the Senate.
That would be seven (7) if the Shadow Senator, Reverend Jessie Jackson counts...
There are no majority black states. The states with the highest percentage of blacks are:
1. Mississippi 36.33%
2. Louisiana 32.32%
3. South Carolina 29.48%
4. Georgia 28.61%
5. Maryland 27.72%
6. Alabama 25.93%
7. North Carolina 21.54%
So the question for the 60 to 80 percent of Whites in these states is: will this black fellow represent my interests? Or will he really just be there for "his people"?
Obama made a great show of being "post-racial". Both implicitly and explicitly he communicated that he was going to be a Presdient for all of America, not focused soley on minority issues.
He did not live up to this vision, and in fact has been highly divisive in his leadership, along racial lines. (The events leading up to the beer summit, the appointment of Eric Holder, the "Wise Latina" appointment and many other events both small and large have created the impression that Obama is a lot more concerned with Blacks than he is with Americans as a whole.
So the bar will be higher.
Contrast the message that Obama has sent via his behaviour with the behaviour of with Bobby Jindahl, who has spent zero time on "Indian Community" issues, and 100% on generic issues that apply to everyone in his state.
Basically Obama is proving that if you are not black there is no good reason to vote for a black candidate. So, yes, we'll probably get a all-white Sentate. Blame Obmama if it happens.
“Basically Obama is proving that if you are not black there is no good reason to vote for a black candidate. So, yes, we’ll probably get a all-white Sentate. Blame Obmama if it happens”
Well, there will be little trust towards any black who seeks a position of influence and power. If it happens and blacks riot, there will be no more holding back. Race relations are going to be totally finished for a decade or two. There’s been this almost overt dementia in regards to blacks and the way they have behaved since Zero took power has been nothing but frightening.
I bet Obama gets impeached by this up and coming Congress.
Hard to Gerrymander a whole state.
Maybe if your side had not been so eager to paint Michael Steele as "Sambo" and throw Oreos at him, and black "journalists" like yourself and Eugene Robinson had not sneeringly pronounced him "insufficiently black," he would be in the Senate now and you would not have had to write this sad little piece.
Carol Mosley Braun of Illinois - idiot America-hating Marxist race pimp.
B. Hussein Obama - idiot America-hating Marxist racist pimp.
What was the question?
Malveaux should note that Meek is being screwed by some of the State Democrats, who are supporting Crist.
What a novel idea! “Hey, Floriduh! Vote for Meek because he’s black!”
It’s never been done before....
No, Julianne, the Senate isn’t “segregated.” “Segregated” is when whites and blacks are separated by law. Words have meanings, even for racist journalists.
I guess the Congressional Black Caucus may be denying membership to all 100 Senators...No racism there.
Perhaps you are stating that there are issues that ONLY pertain to a black person, not a human, not an American, just based on the color of their skin? Would that make you a racist?
And isn't she the one who wished our only black Supreme Court Justice's wife would feed the Justice lots and lots of eggs so he would have a heart attack and die?
Nice lady.

Cheer up, you always have Alvin Green.
That guy from South Carolina is running. He may win and then this story is bunk. Although 12 percent of the US is African American and only six in our history is something to perhaps study as far as getting folks to run and begin in schools to show what you need to do to run and explain the issues to all students.
I bet Obama gets impeached by this up and coming Congress.
Not in a million years. Pelosi did not impeach Bush even though she wanted to but promised John Boehner that she would not.....If you don’t think she will get a pay back, you are not in the political game.
An all-white Senate?
Who cares?
An all black basket ball team
An all black blues group
I am so sick of counting colors.
Julianne never seems to have a problem with an all-black NBA team, does she?
There is nothing of the sort so of course she will not question it. There are Whites on every team in the NBA.
It’ll have to happen. This can’t keep up at the rate this country is falling apart.
Why does creole Malveaux think blacks can only succeed if whites help them or don’t get in their way?
are blacks dependent on whites to fail or succeed?
one of Dubya’s few things I always remember and really liked was the soft bigotry thingie
paternalism from a mulatto projecting her own issues on us and other blacks
not purty
why not simply, blacks can either do well or do poorly by their own volition...they are neither children or pets...
damn i get weary of this...it even pops up here some
You are so good, I bow to you.
(Place picture of Obama bow here.)
Once we start impeaching presidents, it will NEVER stop. That is why I was sooooo glad that the Democrats did not impeach President Bush or try to charge him after he left office.
Malveaux and 90 percent of blacks do not consider CONSERVATIVE blacks “real” blacks so they do not vote for them.
END OF CONVERSATION.
True. Just as well though. Bad precedent. I guess this country will have to get through the rest of this term.
Well, if we had Senator Steele in 2006, it would have been a win-win situation. The Blacks got their senator, the Republicans got someone else to lead the RNC.
Actually I never watch the NBA. I watch college ball. And what I will say, I think is true of many college teams too. What I see of the NBA is highlights on Sports Center at my gym in the morning sometimes. The number of white guys I see on the floor is diminishingly small. Maybe some get to practice with the team, but that doesn't really count, does it?
