West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin said Friday that "it's highly likely" that he'll run for the late Robert C. Byrd's Senate seat but will make a decision next week.

So, he will appoint a "stand-in" who will promise to fill-out Robert Byrd's term and NOT run in 2012. I hope the people of West VA reject him.

O. K. West VA Freepers; I know that the West VA GOP had to know that the day would come when Robert Byrd would pass. Who have they been grooming to run for this seat on the Republican Ticket?

“Who have they been grooming to run for this seat on the Republican Ticket?”

The closest would be Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, whose father is a former Governor. It’s not clear that she would run against Manchin.

Manchin is hated by Obama, so this might be a blessing in disguise.

If true, it would be so much better than kkk byrd.

I don’t follow WVA that closely but I believe Manchin would win big.

“Alan Keyes!”

LOL. He’s already lost by landslides in 2 different states for 2 different senate seats, is there some record of losing he is going for?

Refresh my memory. Why does Obama hate him?

Why would she not? Is it because he is so popular?

Here is how it is going to play out. And I am “deeply saddened” to have to post this.

First Manchin will run and will win.

There is no way any GOP candidate can beat him. Least of all the only GOP officeholder in the state Shelly Moore Capito, who is smart enough to know she has the Congresseat for life if she plays nice with the Dems in Charleston.

Now, the GOP will have a primary. And several people will jump in from all the same old factions within the GOP who hate each other more than they hate the Dems and are the main reason why the state is 85% Dem. These 5 or so folks, will be 3 very good conservative nobodies who will play king-wannabee for a day or so, raise and spend little money and all lose with less than 25% of the vote combined. The race then may draw out 1 or 2 TOP candidates who each have deep pockets and will spend a million tilting at the windmill while savaging the others and all the factions down ticket ruining the chances of any lower seat pick ups in an otherwise good GOP year.

If that isn’t enough, at least one or both of the factions will attack the party Executive committee and or chairman and put on a full coup which will end with this chairman like everyone before him, failing to complete a term and retiring normally.

Now, all this could be avoided if Capito DID run. Because if she did, NO ONE else would run and she would determine the party power structure for the duration and provide huge coattails for the down ticket candidates.

But, it would be political suicide. She is pro abortion and a member of all 3 pro abort groups in congress and nationally. She a Whitman, Snowe, Collins RINO and prides herself on her progressive “independent” stature.

Joe Manchin is 100% Pro Life, Pro Gun, Pro Family and HATES Obama and as others have said, is hated by Obama in kind.

A Conservative Dem vs a Liberal GOP in WV? That is a 70 30 crushing that Capito will NOT even consider.

But, that is not at all the bad news.

The bad news is, as SOON as the election is over and Manchin is sworn in, he is there for LIFE. And he will vote 100% against everything his entire life has been about for that DC power. And the idiots in them thar hills will never be the wiser and he will be another Byrd/Rockefeller clone.

Now, give up on WV, and go fight some winning battles. It’s dead Jim.

The Democrats discovered this week that they could have a special election in 2010, provided that the Governor asks a special session of the Legislature for an additional primary. He will. So, he will appoint someone to serve until the special election in November when the winner will be sworn in to serve the remainder of Byrd’s term. That person will be Manchin.

I agree with your assessment of the race in general, but I do not agree that Manchin will be a Dem go-along on the national scene. There is no way he would support any carbon tax or other legislation that would harm the coal industry. He is unabashedly pro-life and pro-Second Amendment. I live in Manchin country, and all the Manchins I know are firm in their convictions.

I think I’ll do that (give up on WV) and move on. Thanks.

No one, absolutely no one.

“Is it because he is so popular?”

Yes, Governor Manchin has a 77% approval rating. A recent Rasmussen poll shows him leading Moore Capito by a 53% to 39% margin.

It is not exactly BECAUSE he is Popular... you have to understand WHY he is more popular than Capito.

He is 100% rated by the NRA, RTL, FPC.

Shelly Moore Capito is a former chairwoman of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues. Like her father, her voting record has been moderate/centrist; she has a lifetime rating of 69 from the American Conservative Union. She is a member of the Republican Main Street Partnership (which supports stem-cell research) Republicans for Choice and The Wish List, (Women In the Senate and House), a group of pro-choice Republican Party (GOP) women. She is the only pro-choice member of West Virginia’s House delegation.

WV is 75% prolife within the DEMOCRAT party. Capito would be lucky to get that 39%.

Susan. I am sure you know the Machin’s all personally. Perhaps you even helped carry a casket or walked down the isle with one. But, let us be very real for a minute. Byrd and Rockefeller ALL LIE EVERYDAY. And still win 70/30. And Manchin will get ZERO Committee seats, and NO POWER unless he sells out.

Period.

That is the 100000000000000000000000% truth.

But, if he HAS a soul. If he is REAL on any one of these issues.

There is one OTHER thing he could do... one other way to sell out and STILL have power and STAY in office forever...

He could switch parties and give the GOP the majority in the US Senate in exchange for a very senior committee spot.

That is his and OUR only hope.

Pray for that.

He would be to the right of about 6 other Republican Senators anyway.

If a RINO is good for the dems, he sounds like a DINO and would be good for us.

Except the world has never seen a true DINO. Bart Seepak and others like him all CAVE under the real pressure. The only FEW DINO’s we had were in the 90s and in 1994, 4 of them switched parties to GOP. That is the path that DINOs take... remember, DINOs are extinct. LOL
