Mel Gibson's mainstream Hollywood career is over -- for real, this time
L.A Times ^ | July 9th, 2010

It's interesting to try to divine the chicken-and-egg of Mel Gibson's firing by WME last week: Was it his (first-alleged, now aurally proved) misogynistic and racist comments that enabled the agency to part ways with him, or was it the death of longtime agent Ed Limato that did the trick?

Earlier today the news surfaced that William Morris Endeavor had split with Gibson last week-- as Limato lay seriously ill, and just several days after Radar Online broke the news that Gibson had verbally abused his girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva by using the N-word. (The reports were just that until today, when audio of the Gibson incident was released on Radar.)

There's of course a third variable in all this -- the fact that Gibson just wasn't much of a bankable star anymore anyway.

I would just like to ask *Hollywood* why is Mel Gibson’s Career Over, but that Child Molestor Roman Polanski’s isn’t?

Hollywood embraces Roman Polanski...

NEW YORK (CNN) — When filmmaker Roman Polanski was arrested Saturday in Switzerland, he was on his way to accept an award for Lifetime Achievement at the Zurich Film Festival.

Polanski’s friend, Swiss filmmaker Otto Weisser, was among the first to publicly run to his defense.

“This is for me a shock. I am ashamed to be Swiss, that the Swiss is doing such a thing to brilliant fantastic genius, that millions and millions of people love his work,” Weisser said upon learning the director had been detained by Swiss authorities. “He’s a brilliant guy, and he made a little mistake 32 years ago. What a shame for Switzerland.”

By Tuesday, more than 130 heavyweights in the movie industry had taken up Polanski’s cause.

An online petition has been signed by directors such as Marin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Pedro Almodovar, as well as actors.

Studio chief Harvey Weinstein told CNN in a statement: “We are calling every filmmaker we can to help fix this terrible situation.”

I read some other article where it was asserted that Gibson had always wanted to get loose of his agent, once his particular agent had passed on.

Not defending Gibson, but I wouldn't count him out yet. Doesn't he still have a fair amount of clout in Hollywood, and can't he still get work independently of that agency?

No need for his kind in Hollywood or Middle America.

Let’s face it, Mel brought this down upon himself. After the huge box office Passion of the Christ brought in, Hollywood thought he was a flake, but one they could do business with.

Mel Gibson is his own Hollywood.

There are two kinds of actors, passive pretty boy/girls who wait around for somebody to hand them parts for their looks, and businessmen/women who finance and star in their own films and roll the dice. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose, but they are anything but passive. They don't wait around for someone to hand them a part. They make their own parts.

Guess which kind of actor Mel is?

Why?

Gibson took a *BEATING* making the Passion of the Christ* he was a whipping post for liberals in *Hollywood* He had an on-going battle with Abe Foxman from the ADL and some other Hollywood Liberals..When he said *All the Jews are responsible for wars* under the influence, that is his mind having a *War* (personal) with the Jews in Hollywood which has nothing to do with *Judaism* or Israel.

Now if he was a member of the Nazi Aryan Brotherhood, Was praising ALLAH and Jihad to the Jews, then I would say yes he is Anti-Semetic...He has been an actor for many years and worked with all the Liberal Jews in Hollywood with no problems ever!

Can you imagine: A Private Argument you had with your spouse taped then plastered all over the Internet for all to hear...Then going to work to have your BOSS tell you..Based on some leaked tapes about you I have heard, you are *FIRED! the world would go Ape Crazy!

Yet they villify Gibson..WHY because he did not Cowar to the Hollywood Big Wigs and made the Passion of the Christ and made 600 Million without their BS...

G-D is more Powerful than Hollywood and they hate it!

Not publicized, but obvious in light of what has happened over the last few years.

Please, you are just abiding by the local Hollywood gossip columnists and refusing to see that the same is true of almost all Hollywood people. Geez, I don’t really give a damn about Gibson, but Hollywood is so full of this type that you could not strike a match without burning someone...

Mel was flying high until he did the "Christ" movie, and they've been trying to "palinize" him ever since...so this doesn't surprise me.

But, I like Mel, I like his movies; I still buy his movies. I'm not going to be judgemental on the "N" word until the black rappers stop using it, and until someone pounces on the Black Panthers for their racial epithets.

I'm tired of this one-way crap...what's good for the goose, is good for the Amish.

But, racist is the worst thing you can call anyone these days. Most of the people tossing that word around judge people based on something (and a lot of them judge people based on race, the just keep it to themself). I get so sick of the self righteous who follow the trend of the day. Mel has some problems, and I suspect substance abuse is at the root. I pray for him and I wish him well. There is unlikely to be a person posting on this forum who hasn’t said something in private, that if recorded and played in public wouldn’t *ruin* them. But it’s fun to play gotcha.

Gibson has made enough money that he can say anything he damn well pleases. Is his career over? He’s got the money in the bank to retire, why even entertain the thought that some Hollywood liberal big whig may hire him for a movie? Gibson can say and do all he wants, public be damned.

Somehow, I do not believe that yelling Anti-Semitic epithets at a peace officer is an effective way to balance any anti-Catholic bias that may exist in Hollywood.

“I’m tired of this one-way crap...what’s good for the goose, is good for the Amish.”

I’m with you. Gibson’s been under attack for years, especially for Passion. But, since he’s an evil white male, he’s expected to be held to an impossibly higher standard than, say, Snoop Dogg or Lisa Lampinelli. Gibson’s excesses are certainly not unusual for the cesspool that is Hollywood, but in his case, the LA Times just can’t wait to declare his career dead.

I will always be in awe of Braveheart, and more importantly, The Patriot. These stunning works mean much more to me than him using the “N word” in a private conversation or getting drunk and calling a cop a “Jay Oh Oh” while under the influence.

Let’s get a grip.

To use the radical feminist analogy: Mel Gibson needs Hollywood like a fish needs a bicycle.

His estimated net worth is between $800m and $1b. For him to even bother with heavily indebted California and their unions would double the cost of making a movie about anywhere else. And he doesn’t even need to mess with a distributor or theater chains.

There are large parts of the Christian world where extras would pay him for the chance to be part of a crowd in one of his movies.

Seriously, what can Hollywood offer him?

Yeah, I agree. He’s the only one I could come up with.

And I would venture to say that Voigt’s career might have been more stellar had he joined with the liberal trash. It’s possible that by being more conservative, his career in Whorey-wood wasn’t what it could have been.

Very talented actor by the way. Whorey-wood doesn’t know talent anymore; only politics.
