Mel Gibson's mainstream Hollywood career is over -- for real, this time
L.A Times ^ | July 9th, 2010

It's interesting to try to divine the chicken-and-egg of Mel Gibson's firing by WME last week: Was it his (first-alleged, now aurally proved) misogynistic and racist comments that enabled the agency to part ways with him, or was it the death of longtime agent Ed Limato that did the trick?

Earlier today the news surfaced that William Morris Endeavor had split with Gibson last week-- as Limato lay seriously ill, and just several days after Radar Online broke the news that Gibson had verbally abused his girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva by using the N-word. (The reports were just that until today, when audio of the Gibson incident was released on Radar.)

There's of course a third variable in all this -- the fact that Gibson just wasn't much of a bankable star anymore anyway.

While Mel may be bipolar, that does not excuse his actions.

I don't think anyone here is arguing that his actions (actually...in this case words, no actions) were appropriate.

I think the argument is...will he never work in Hollywood again because very nasty things said in private were made public?

A perfectly silly article.

Mel Gibson doesn’t need to work, but if he wants to, he will.

Since he can self-finance, who’s going to stop him?

Like the rest of Hollywood what he’d really need the most is a great script, not the approval of the LA Times.

“I think the argument is...will he never work in Hollywood again because very nasty things said in private were made public?”

I think it is these words coupled with his Anti-Semitic Rant a few years ago.

However, as far as I can tell, there is not law that has been passed that prohibits Mel from working in Hollywood.

Therefore, if you like, you can go out to Hollywood, open a studio, write a screenplay and direct your own movie staring Mel Gibson.

>>>...He needs to get himself right with G-D again and start over<<<<<

We can write God here. It is permitted. Be proud to print it GOD.

As for Mel Gibson, using the N word. Big deal

Senator Byrd used it and it never harmed him, but of course they were getting something out of him. A Democrat vote.

Mel Gibson is a great actor unlike Bruce Willis who smears fake blood on a T-shirt and goes around shouting Holly Holly.

How does he square his outrageous personal failings with his past public professions of being devoutly Catholic?

This is the same man who made "The Passion of the Christ"?

He has enough money to retire quietly, I suppose. Personally, I would rather see him admits his many problems and work hard to fix them.

Well it’s not cool to be slinging racist and anti semitic comments, and Mel seems to get soused and has one heck of a temper. Sad that a handsome guy with a lot of talent and success isn’t a happy person.

If he is truly bipolar, I can tell you it's a true psychosis. Their cognitive brain shuts down. And the alcohol is self medicating to try and get their moods under control.

I've thought on this for years, believe me. It's hard to come to these conclusions. It's hard to believe someone can't help screaming racial obscenities. If he has true bipolar, he will have delusions and hallucinations that convince him of the rightness of his actions.

Does that mean he should have to compensate people for the rotten stuff he's put them though? We had to.

Bipolar and Schizophrenia are the two big psychotic illnesses. Believe me, bipolar makes you as crazy as schizophrenia does. That does not mean the diagnosis is not abused by people who don't have the real, flaming illness but use it as an excuse for total stupidity.

Real bipolars have people floating from the ceiling, angels and demons and whatever. We can't know how bad Mel is. But he behaves exactly like my family member, who used to have nazis and jews chasing him through the house.

Baldwin recently made a big movie with Meryl Streep and is still successful on TV.

there are plenty of people here that will defend Gibson for his Anti-Semitic, violent and racist rants

Again, I don't think people defend those things. I think they are reacting against the attitude of the media in declaring him "over" because of things said in private. It's typical to do tabloid reporting, but prophesying his career to be dead might be more about "the Passion" than anything else.

Wow... Great list! Now just who in Hollywood is going to hire them now? Shame on you for exposing them!

Just kidding, but that was a very nice list - surprised that there are so many in Hollywood. Of course some of those may deney being conservative if asked on most TV shows...heh.

Gibson’s future will be over when his movies don’t make millions.

His movies haven't made millions for a number of years now.

The guy is bipolar.

By his own admission, he has bipolar disorder. When he is not psychotic he can be brilliant and incredibly creative -- and this is not at all uncommon with bipolars.

As for "never working in Hollywood again" -- he probably has F-U type money -- he can direct and produce his own films for the rest of his life.

Based on your name, you must be a Skeet Ulrich fan.

Loved him in "Ride with the Devil".

“I think they are reacting against the attitude of the media in declaring him “over” because of things said in private.”

Oh, I see, so you do not believe that the things that Alec Baldwin said in private should be used against him?

More media trash from the LA Slimes trying to destroy a mans career.

Right. And the media also conspired to destroy Helen Thomas's career, too.

Mel is white and a Christian. Let’s destroy him

If you heard or read what he said to his ex, you would question the latter. He may be Christian in the sense most Americans are Christian, but doesn't walk the walk. He is walking the other way. Regardless of his personal life, which seams to be a mess, most of his movies do what movies are supposed to do- be very entertaining. I will miss his work. Too Bad, Oh, too Bad! for his professional work and his personal life.

Smart post and I agree. Mel’s got problems like many Americans. Me included (only Mel’s got a billion times more money than I do). He needs to get him self sorted out and enjoy his remaining years on earth. Life’s too short to be creating that kind of turmoil.

I have had friends and family that are bipolar and Schizophrenia and I understand what can happen during an episode.

However, they should never be excused for their actions are words.
