For Rebekah Testar, selling Avon products door-to-door started as a part-time hobby to earn a little extra cash for Christmas.

However, the mother-of-three is now one of the company's top sales consultants - having sold more than £4million of beauty products.

The mother-of-three agreed to work after her husband, Tony, was forced to give up his job as a financial consultant because of ill health.

Direct sales isn’t easy, especially for a cosmetic company with so much competition out there. Congratulations to this hard-working, optimistic lady.

Direct sales is a lot easier if you are an attractive female.

Or, believe it or not, a gay man. Pampered Chef’s top male sellers are gay.

“Direct sales isn’t easy, especially for a cosmetic company with so much competition out there.”

You are correct about that. Here in the state the competiton is fierce. Avon ladies and Mary Kay gals are up against all the stores that sell cosmetics at a cheaper price. Good for all those people who are successfull in direct sales.

Back in the late 50’s, selling Avon in College sure helped pay for my expenses. If one girl bought something in a dormitory room, most of the others just had to “try” something too. It worked out well—perhaps I should have stuck to it after Graduation.

...Mrs Testar, 42, now has 1,750 reps working under her.

Much like Amway and Herbalife, the key to success is getting associates working underneath you, not the direct sales that you yourself make. An accurate headline would read; 1750 Avon representatives sell £4m worth of cosmetics.

That said, I still congratulate her. She worked within the system and made it work for her instead of mooching off of the taxpayer.

If Avon is structured like Pampered Chef, which I am VERY familiar with, she sold that four million herself. Yes, she has people under her, but more like a management system in which she provides training, recognition, meetings, and other types of support. Additionally, she probably has to travel quite a bit to conventions, regional meetings, etc. It’s more like being an upper level manager in a corporation, but without the walls. Her 1,750 consultants have sold far, far more than 4 million pounds. Maintaining a business at that level is definitely a 40 hour per week job. Been there, done that — but never 4 million dollars worth!
