If the election for governor of California were held today, Republican Meg Whitman would edge out Democrat Jerry Brown 46% to 39%, according to a new CBS 5 KPIX-TV poll of likely voters released Monday.
Brown, currently California's Attorney General, leads by a not surprising 2-1 margin in the Bay Area, but trails in the rest of the state, according to the poll data.
The poll found Whitman, former CEO of eBay, has leads built up among men and affluent voters. She gets 77% of Republican voters, while Brown gets the support of 64% of Democrats. Independents break by a 5-4 margin for Whitman.
In the race for U.S. Senator from California, Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer and Republican Carly Fiorina are effectively even, the poll found.
Fiorina got 47% voter support compared to Boxer's 45%, which is within the poll's four percentage point margin of error.
The poll found twice as many Democrats cross-over to vote Republican as Republicans who cross-over to vote Democrat in the senate race.
Fiorina has an ever-so-slight advantage in the Greater Los Angeles area and in the Central Valley. She also carries the Inland Empire by a 2-1 margin, while Boxer carries the Bay Area by 2-1, the poll data showed.
Proposition 19, which would legalize marijuana, and allow marijuana to be regulated and taxed in California, is supported among those likely voters surveyed by 50% to 40%, although 11% remained uncertain how they would vote on the issue.
The poll found younger voters support the measure, while older voters oppose it. Democrats and Independents tended to support pot legalization, while Republicans generally opposed the idea.
The CBS 5 poll of 614 likely California voters was conducted by the polling firm SurveyUSA from July 8 through July 11 and has a four-point margin of error.
Other poll findings included:
— Only 40% of California voters view President Obama favorably and a nearly equal 38% view him negatively.
— 37% of Californians view the Tea Party movement negatively, compared with 31% that have a positive view.
— 77% believe the state of California is headed the wrong way, while only 11% felt things were moving in the right direction.
— Split feelings on whether to allow off-shore drilling in California; 37% oppose it and 35% support it.
If those numbers were reversed, Brown 46% - Whitman 39%, it would be described as a blowout not that he “would edge” her....I hate the Liberal Media.....

I’m not wild about Fiorina, but this is a case when anyone would be an improvement. Babs Boxer is just...*ergghh*.

I love how Fiorina has 2 pt lead but they say they’re tied and it’s “effectively even”. If this was 2006 and some long time GOP incumbent in a dark red state was trailing a political novice by 2 pts they’d be saying “incredible lead for democratic upstart, what does this say about the GOP?”
I think Boxer’s defeat would be the #1 highlight of this election. Even above Reid. Reid would be #2. But Reid just doesn’t annoy me personally as much as Boxer. And, frankly, if Reid loses and Schumer takes over as Dem leader I think he’d be way more effective. But seeing Boxer lose would be so sweet. She’s also the #1 pro-abortion voice in the Senate and to see her lose to a pro-life woman would be the icing on the cake.
How anyone could ever support Boxer after that famous “wanted baby” exchange with Rick Santorum is beyond me.
Agreed. Whitman will likely do better than Fiorina and I think the better she does, the more her coattails help. I suspect there will be many who see the two of them as a package deal. If someone is voting for Whitman for Gov, they may as well vote for the other GOP woman for Senate. And Whitman has unlimited cash so she can spend whatever it takes to build up a huge lead and that will only help Fiorina.
If the two of them both win in November that would be truly amazing. And if they both do well and that puts CA in play in 2012 Obama is finished.
Someone should do a Califorina Gurls video using that Katy Perry song and promoting them. Help them among the youth vote.
Ironically enough, none other than Meg Whitman supported her in 2004. Whitman donated the maximum of $5000 to Boxer and served on her re-election committee.

77% wrong direction yet has beens Obama, Brown amd Boxer have significant favorability and the Tea Party, representing potential change is negative.
The only pleasant surprise is that offshore drilling is close.
I wonder how many in the media said that Obama edged out McCain when he won by around the same 7 pt margin. All I remember is how he won a huge landslide victory.
