Imperial Valley newspaper catches heat for political cartoon

The Imperial Valley Press is being criticized by some readers who believe a political cartoon mocked the injuries of a decorated Iraq war veteran who is running for Congress.

The cartoon, published Saturday, shows a poster of candidate Nick Popaditch, who has a patch over his right eye. Two youths with skateboards seem perplexed by the poster

"What does that remind you of?" one says.

The other answers: "A James Bond super villain? A bald pirate? Uncle Fester with an eye patch."

Popaditch, a Marine gunnery sergeant, lost the sight in his right eye during the battle for Fallouja in Iraq in 2004. He received the Silver Star and Purple Heart and now is the Republican candidate in the 51st Congressional District, facing Democratic incumbent Bob Filner.

They claim it was a comment on ill-informed voters.

Youths on skateboards aren’t voters. Poor excuse...

Off to wash my keyboard.

The Gunny's a tankers' tanker no doubt!

I pray this is the incident that helps his campaign catch fire.

When I was in the Army the Marine armor officers trained with us at Ft. Knox. There was a lot of good natured ribbing, but they were good people.

There’s no doubt the editor in chief at that paper imagines the Islamofascists will kill him last.

Of course it was intended to mock him, it was drawn and posted by and in a liberal newsrag. They don't respect our military, they revile our military and have contempt for those who serve in it.

Time for Americans to WAKE UP and see exactly who conservatives are running against and who they elected in 2008. Sadly this won't get much play beyond conservative boards and Fox News (if they even pick it up).

They always imagine they're safe. Truth is they would have to be among the first to go. Ain't gonna be no free press in any islamic fascist state.

That is the California county adjacent to raul grijalva’s Arizona district. No surprise there.

I gave up writing to the IV Press long ago in an attempt to de-left wing it’s editorial slant. This area is strongly liberal with a much smaller but vocal conservative minority. To be honest with you I am quite surprised that the paper is alive and publishing, the socio-economic environment can be quite disheartening. As a reminder to other Freepers this area has led the country in unemployment (hovering around 25-27%)and is one of the poorest counties per capita in California let alone the nation.

PS It is also the winter home of the Blue Angels at NAS El Centro.
