SAN ANTONIO -- Police said a man accused of shooting 29-year-old Chris Lopez, who was trying to break into his uncle's home on Longmeadow Drive, will likely not face charges.
Police said Lopez, a 2001 Texas Youth Commission graduate, was trying to break into the back door of a home when the homeowner's nephew warned him that someone was inside.
Lopez then tried to take off with a lawnmower from the the carport and that's when the nephew opened fire through the kitchen window, hitting the man in the chest, killing him.
A neighbor and a woman who knew Lopez both said what happened at the house was bound to happen sooner or later.
A friend of his family said Lopez -- who died despite the paramedics working on him in the backyard -- was known for breaking into houses, even in his own neighborhood.
Lopez's sister, 14-year-old Amanda Lopez, said he did have a criminal past but that he was turning his life around.
"When I did things wrong he would always get after me," she said. "He's the only big brother I have and then just for everybody to say things like that, they took the only thing I was actually close to"
Given the recent burglaries, neighbor Daniel Villanueva said he does not blame the homeowner for having a nephew house sit, armed with a shotgun.
Villanueva said he is glad Lopez was shot, hoping the break-ins will stop.
You have to protect your house. You have to protect yourself, said Villanueva.
Even after reinforcing his own front door when it happened to him, Villanueva said someone tried to jimmy the lock. Villanueva said he also has a wrought-iron door.
Cleansing of the gene pool continues.

Ah yes, the classic “He was trying to turn his life around” blather. If that’s true, THEN WHY WAS HE KILLED IN THE COMMISSION OF A FELONY!?!
Thinning the herd. Nice shootin’ Tex.

Yeah he went from Carjackings and Armed Robberies to stealing Lawnmowers. (Baby steps, baby steps, ya know)
'Series', sorry sis. That carp doesn't fly any more.
Yes but he had a difficult youth.
YOUTH COMMISSION GRADUATE??????
I guess he was advancing his studies by taking post graduate burglary courses in his spare time.
To the person who posted yesterday that THINGS are not worth a life but people are. He was quickly pegged as not being from Texas. Yes, burglaries will decrease in this neighborhood.
“Yes but he had a difficult youth.”
Please tell me you’re being sarcastic. I had a difficult youth too, but I’m not a criminal.
Outstanding!
“Keep your home defense gun ready in San Antonio” ping.
Lighten up, Dude— he was going to start a lawn mowing business and create jobs...

Right, they had to turn him over on the gurney.
Total B.S.
My favorite line,
“Why did you shoot him six times”?
Cause I ran out of bullets.
;-)
LOL!!...how PC.
Did he graduate at the top of his class?
Yeah, he just had to steal a few more things to get a little start up money to start his own business--selling drugs.
Amen. No knee-jerk Hispanic loyalty here, thank God.
I love living in San Antonio just for this reason.
We were playing Texas Holdem the other night and a player said if a burglar tried to make off with something of his and he was off the property, he would just shoot him and drag his dead a$$ back onto the property.
The other 4 layers at the table all nodded in agreement. Then they all compared handguns. Line of the night.
“Stopping crime in San Antonio, one bullet at a time. Brought to you by the good people at Smith & Wesson.”
Does noöne understand the rules of granmmar?
"who was trying to break into his "
These are the same person (or should be)
The whole nephew/uncle thing through me off. Why is this relevant to the story? “There is someone in here”, I thought that was the nephew telling the uncle that someone was breaking in.
The perp whoever he was related to, after being told by someone (an uncle, a cousin, a nephew, or a sister) that someone was in there, in other words, the jig is up, (can you still say that?) still took the lawnmower and ran away BACKWARDS? (shot in the chest) through the yard.
“he did have a criminal past but that he was turning his life around.”
LOL! A classic line! I’ll bet he was an aspiring rap artist too.
Thanks JB. My faith in you is restored! ;)
