President Obama ranks 15th out of 44 in a poll of the best and worst presidents while former President George W. Bush earns a place in the bottom five, according to the Siena College Research Institute's recent survey of 238 presidential scholars released Thursday.
Obama secured a top ten place in two skill set categories, communication ability (7th) and ability to compromise (10th), and in two personality trait categories, imagination (6th) and intelligence (8th). Background, described as family, education, and experience, proved his lowest score at 32nd.
This is the 5th time the institute has conducted the survey of U.S. presidents, which is done a year after a new president takes office. The inaugural survey in 1982 ranked then-President Ronald Reagan at 16th. "Obviously, there's not great validity to it since they've only been in office for one year," says the survey's co-director and statistician Douglas Lonnstrom. "But it's a benchmark for us to see how they move." [Take our poll: Who is the worst president?]
President tend to rank around 20th while they are in office, and Obama is no exception. His actions over the next few years will decide if he stays roughly the same like Reaganwho moved from 16th to 20th, 22nd, 16th again, and finally to 18th this yearor like Bush, who fell a dramatic 16 slots in the first poll after he left office, from 23rd to 39th.

History will be the real judge.
LOL, this is ridiculous. “Presidential Scholars” ... more like hippy academics.
I know not a great many at FR lament this but this is a moral outrage.
I would put Bush in the top ten and Obama in the bottom ten.
Bush did fight mightily here at home and abroad for the good name of this nation.
Flame away— we all know I won’t change.
I always thought that as Obama proved how exponentially opposed he was to Bush that conservatives would relent on their bashing. I am not sure that has happened.
Fiscally, socially, internationally, interpersonally its just not close in any domain.
This is nothing but liberal mental masturbation, and the results are about the same.
Don’t worry. I firmly believe that history will be kind to President Bush and that his image will increase with time, somewhat the same as with Harry Truman.
Isaiah 5:20 “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil that put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter...” Other translations for woe include “Cursed are those” and “How horrible it will be for those”... I couldn’t put it any better!!
I don’t think too much of Bush, either, but these guys are clearly nuts if they think Obama is better than Bush.
Note to Self: Immediately dismiss any information originating or even passing through Sienna College.
Reveals more about the so-called scholars than the presidents.
This is a joke. They still can’t stand the fact that Bush lowered taxes, won the war in Iraq, and kept the country free from terrorism.
Was this poll taken in Detroit, San Francisco or Washington, DC or some other liberal hellhole?
You are exactly right. Slimey drivel and dirty hands-works for me to describe Dems.
Bush did a great job intially with the War on Terror, except that he hesitated to really name the enemy. If not for 9-11 his “compassionate conservatism” might have broken the bank before Obama got the chance. Medicare Part D? No Child Left Behind? Huge grants to fight AIDS in Africa?
What else might he have done?
I suspect that history will cut GWB some slack — particularly on foreign affairs. It won’t take long. 1 or 2 more major screwups by Obama and Bush will rise in peoples’ estimations.
I learned all I needed to know about “presidential scholars” in the wake of MonicaGate, when “presidential scholars” undertook a multi-year effort to dredge up or make up incidents of presidential philandering across the centuries to try and dilute Our Bill’s compulsive satyriasis.
They decided if they could tar everyone from Jefferson to Eisenhower they could render Bill’s porking more palatable.
Was that the US News and Obama Report?
The Kenyan is just warming up. He’ll be rock bottom and dead last when all the votes are finally counted. Carter, take a breath, it ain’t you anymore.
Yeah, I can go with that.
Yes you are right ,if you are into drug taking, pot smoking, flaming homo’s,racist, he would be the best..but most Americans have morals and this moron of a demon has none..
“Scholars” - Snort!
but the study fails to point out that among those surveyed, 90% could not name more than 3 presidents.
Worse, they have never had to write the ultimate check - “To the United Sates of America, payable on demand, all of my futures” by serving in the combat arms.
The President Bushs wrote that check - Bush 41 damn near had to sign that check during the closing year of World War 2; Bush 43 wrote a smaller check every time he went out on an intercept in the F-102 as part of the TANG. The kill rate for F-102 pilots wasn't a low number.
If you want to criticize a man I have no problem with that act if you have personal experience to base your criticisms upon.
No serving college professor has ever had risk their lives or commit the lives of their students to real live mortal combat. yet, they feel highly qualified to criticize those who have to.
Remember, it is not the college professor (profession student) that keeps this nation safe - it is the grunt, frequently a high school/junior college graduate, who does. When in trouble or doubt who to thank for your freedoms always choose the lowest ranking grunt over the most highly acclaimed and tenured professor!
And my polling says US News and World Report is the worst news magazine. So why would their presidential poll be of any value. Other than recycled paper.
The first raghead alleged president is a moron. The MSM has high praise for lowlifes.
“Obama secured a top ten place in two skill set categories, communication ability (7th) and ability to compromise (10th), and in two personality trait categories, imagination (6th) and intelligence (8th).”
I’m still laughing at this.
Fifteenth, huh? Jeez, I had him rated sixteenth.
Um, there were only 16 presidents, right?
And 57 states?
Siena - now that is a real think tank of privileged mama-milk-drinkers.
TOO true and utterly laughable!
Anyone with 2 working brain cells to rub cogently together

‘Liberal Bias’ Cited in Professors Ranking Bush a Failure
“The fact that more professors, percentage-wise, disapprove of Bush than does the general population is because of the professors’ political views, Lonnstrom said. “The people who go into these fields, in other words become a history professor or political science professor, probably are somewhat more liberal than the population as a whole,” he said.”
I am reading a book called “Heaven on Earth, the Rise and Fall of Socialism” and so many things jump out at me compared to the situation we are in today.
One is that during the different socialist or communist movements (or even takeovers) in history, the intellectuals who were part of these movements were “oh so smart”. But a historical perspective shows them for what they are unrealistic, dangerous, corrupt and lacking an understanding of the nature of mankind and what makes them tick (and what makes societies floursih).
I hope the same will be true with Obama.
Well, one can hope, anyway.
Article from US News & World Report, a failing, unread publication WHOSE PUBLISHER WRITES SPEECHES FOR OBAMA!
Were any of those surveyed actually alive or had an IQ above 30?
“US Screwed up News Reports” was, at one time (a VERY long ago) a relatively non-biased news magazine. Then it had a “management change” and turned into just another socialist mouthpiece like Time and Newspeak.
Obama has yet to pass a single major piece of legislation with more than 1 or 2 republican votes. Most of the time, he is working to secure the votes of his own party.
How that gets him HIGH ranking in the category of “compromise”, I cannot fathom. Of all the things Obama is not, a compromiser is one of them. (Other than a compromiser of the truth, that is).
Bush was a good man. These rankings are like junior high popularity contests -- ughh!
Bushs spending is quite constrained compared to other presidents. The general strategy of growing the economy more than spending was a shrewd diffusion of risks associated with cutting popular programs.
Bush vs Obama on tarp is illustrative. Bush spent less than half, required it paid back and with interests. It has been paid back already.
Obama has no such stipulations. The spending by Obama is exponentially worse.
“Very long time ago”-—possibly before Mort Zuckerman bought the franchise in 1984.
But it appears that even Zuckerman is now having buyers remorse regarding Zero http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2551594/posts
Can we administer an intelligence test or at least get the SAT scores for verification of the alleged intelligence?
That sounds about the right time frame. I had subscribed to USSUNR in those days because it was the only newsmagazine that appeared even remotely non-partisan. Time and Newsweak had long before sold their souls to the lefties.
The change in "perspective" of the mag changed palpably, and I dropped my subscription shortly thereafter.
I was also a faithful reader of USNWR until then.
Thank God for Jim Robinson and FreeRepublic.
There were a few years there in the chasm that I felt like I was the only sane, conservative person remaining. I have found my home here.
Thank you very much, vis a vis!! Welcome home!!
Obama in the bottom ten? I’m praying that he will demonstrate far more competence at some point than we have seen so far, that he will grow into the job, and that he will not be the bottom one by too large a margin. This man is supporting deficit spending at $1.5T to $1.7T a year! Add that to his other power grabs, and we are facing a threat to the existence of the United States as a free country.
“No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.”
Two days ago I was having a conversation with a family on vacation. One of the 17 y/o boys said how he didn't like Bush, so I asked him why. "He messed everything up" was his reply. After some gentle prodding -- I was too tired to go batty on him -- he finally said he didn't really know why, but his teachers keep saying that so he assumed it was true. Grrrrrrr!
"He messed everything up" were the same words my 9 y/o grandson said nearly 2 years ago when I asked him why he said he hated Bush.
There are some "teachers" that need strung up by their toe nails.
