NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Restrictions on new oil and gas drilling could soon spread from the Gulf of Mexico to onshore operations.
There's currently a moratorium set to last until Nov. 30 on drilling rigs used for deepwater operations in the Gulf. It is designed to halt new operations until the causes of the BP accident are known and new safety procedures can be put in place.
2diggEmail Print CommentBut the incident has heightened concerns over other forms of oil and gas drilling -- specifically in the prolific but controversial shale formations.
The shale areas, so-named due to the type of rock they contain, are relatively new areas for natural gas production in the United States. They are thought to hold vast amounts of the fuel used mostly to generate electricity and a cleaner alternative to coal.
But the shale is often located near major population centers, and concerns have arisen that drilling will contaminate drinking water.
Many residents that live in or near the shale areas have formed groups calling for tougher regulations. But so far they've enjoyed little support from the Obama administration or other powerful politicians.
That may be shifting.
"The perception of risk has changed, and the reason for it can be summed up in one word - Macondo," said Kevin Book, a managing director at Clear View Energy Partners, referring to BP's leaking well.
Book is among the analysts that believe tighter federal regulations on shale drilling are coming, perhaps sometime in 2011.

Riding a bike might do something for Michelle’s fat ass.
There, Fixed it.
The muslim pretender makes Nixon look honest, Carter look like a genius and Clinton look like the oracle of truth.
The judge has informed the government that they can't just shut down a leasehold (called a "permit") without some evidence that the lessee has violated some term in the lease.
That's pretty much covered in Law 101. It's amplified in later courses but anyone who did first semester law should know that one.
Like it's not rocket science!
When it comes to wells on lands owned by states or private individuals it's more proper to speak of "regulation", but the USSC has continually ruled over the years that at some point regulation can and does turn into a "taking" so the government can't just regulate something to the point where it has no economic value. NOTE: these cases are all very complex so you need to study them closely.
Time to crush the COMMIES in our government....ALL OF THEM!

This almost sounds like an attempt to crash the Texas Economy.
Not sounds like - it is !
The EPA is playing havoc with the permitting of petrochemical plants, discarding years of practice under Texas regulation. Never mind that the Texas way was successful, and air quality improved.
Comrade Obama doesn't like opposition, and doesn't hesistate to use "Chicago way" tactics to hose those who don't kiss his rear.
With Obama’s energy policies we will soon be shivering or sweltering in our darkened homes and those few of us still with jobs may not be able to afford driving to work. Obama’s socialism will give us the standard of living our grandparents enjoyed in about 1900 where having cold running water and a flush toilet in your home and a few bare electric lights were the lap of luxury.

You should download that song “Kill A Commie For Mommy.” It’s great!
Hello $10 per gallon gasoline! One way or another the Left will turn America into a turd world nation and make us equal to them.
here in PA where we have a LOT of shale gas, the local Commies are running around throwing everything possible against the wall to see if they can shut it down. (I suspect though they will fail because the local Democrat political class is slobbering all over themselves at the thought of all that new revenue they can tax and spend)
Failing at the local level would of course not stop Emperor Obama (though he’d likely have to throw a bailout package at Fast Eddie Rendell to buy his silence)
Obama: equal-opportunity industry destroyer.
