McCain Surges

From CNN:

Sen. John McCain is widely ahead of his two primary challengers, according to a new poll.

A Behavior Research Center survey released Thursday indicates that 64 percent of likely Arizona Republican primary voters support McCain, with19 percent backing former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, five percent supporting Jim Deakin, a Tea Party activist, and 12 percent undecided. The primary is scheduled for August 24.

Why such a gap?

"The simple reality is that McCain took his (Hayworth's) border and SB 1070 issue away from him, and then nailed him on ethics issues pertaining to being a lobbyist and so on," said Earl de Berge, Behavior Research Center's research director. "Most Republicans just pinch their nose at that stuff, and I think it just turned them off to him. It's the devil you know versus the devil you don't know."

The margin of of error for the sample in de Berge's poll is 6.9 percent.

Hayworth responds:

Hayworth spokesman Mark Sanders says the polling firm has "no credibility."

thats the really sad part of this for me. I was a big SP supporter early on, now its just same old same. We are never gonna get ahead with people like Mclame back in. They are mostly the reason we are HERE!! what good will it do to get back the house/senate only to be screwed every time Juan wants to “maverick” himself??

With people like Mclame back in, you might as well leave a rat majority, that is in effect what you are doing on anything of substance...

McCain ran negative campaign ads saying Hayworth was a big spender, earmarks...seems the general public bought it. Hayworth also has some local enemies that Grant Woods, ex attorney general, Sam Coppersmith, the former Chairman of the Democrat party and a former Congressman, also, has said stuff against him in a column on the Az Republic for years. He called JD a Nazi because Jd Hayworth, in his book quoted Henry Ford, about immigration. Henry Ford evidently got a reward from Hitler, and so Coppersmith, wanting the Dem to get elected, (Harry Mitchell) took on a smear campaign in the ever ready Az Republic, the same paper that was a comlete toady to Janet Napolitano and is pro immigration.

Agree with every single word you said. There are a lot of us out here, and speaking for myself - I’m disillusioned as hell.

Yep. I’m not holding out much hope for us in 2012. With people like McCain back in the senate, we’re screwed.

How long after the election will the new immigration hawk have another change of heart?

I can’t believe Arizona has such a short memory.

Republicans deserve what they get if they can’t draw together and get rid of these RINOs. I’m disgusted, but hoping against hope that this just isn’t true.

or maybe Arizona Republicans believe JD is a buffoon.

Trying to run a serious campaign when you are viewed as the new Matt Lesko is a difficult business. Stick a fork in JD folks.

I can’t believe Arizona has such a short memory.

It's just like the people in West Virginia with Robert Byrd - they're being bought off.

Are Democraps allowed to vote in GOP primaries there???

How in the hell did we allow that to happen?

That is how McLame won the ONE primary in the Pres. race- that allowed the presstitutes to tout him as the runaway winner

He is doing the same thing now- he is NOT stupid, he knows the media and the democraps will support him over Hayworth

If McCain wins then they will use the win to say they were ahead of the curve on predicting the outcome. If he loses they will pass it off to a miracle come-from-behind win, and their followers will buy it hook, line and sinker. Polls have gone from being snapshots of the situation to being a method of affecting results. The MSM uses them all the time to spin stuff.

This of course is what every poll is today. In every national election - a propaganda tool, used to good effect on the self-conscious who have no internal sense of values or honesty with themselves.

Election strategy today is quite psychologically sophisticated, taken from psy-ops in international conflict. And unfortunately that is where the money comes in, it can employ the most devious talent, not unlike advertising in general which of course has had a long run in America.

The counter to that, the only counter, is brutal honesty coupled with the hope that the electorate can see through the phoniness. The McCain phenomenon is a perfect example - big money backs him (because he can be manipulated through his ego), and the electorate, largely old folks (AZ), can also be easily manipulated.

That is why we are advocates of a third party and the Tea Party. Objective outside outspokenness is really the only hope for a return to conservative sanity. Personally I think, being a college instructor, the young could respond to that if presented with integrity. But you sure are not going to get it from the "Republican" DC establishment.

Basically, that’s what I meant with the skewed polling.

"The simple reality is that McCain took his (Hayworth's) border and SB 1070 issue away from him, and then nailed him on ethics issues pertaining to being a lobbyist and so on,"

Yeah he took the border issue out of it with the help of Sarah Palin. He also tarred JD with the "Lobbiest" brush with the help of $20 million left over from his presidential campaign and $5 million in his senate fund. Gee, I wonder how he managed to convince so many Arizonans? Just because there was a glossy flier in their mail every day with a picture of JD looking like some evil cartoon character.

I'm hoping JD can still pull it out, he has very little money but he may just be able to pull if off.

What are the Arizona laws on primary voting? Is it possible that a large number of Democrats are crossing over to support Juan? After all, he only won his home state by about 53% in 2008, didn’t he?

I don’t know, but primaries should be closed and you make a good point.

And, how would that be different that McCain?

At least JD doesn't have the proven track record of buffoonery that McLame has.
