Rats and diseases infested Cuban prison cells so badly that some inmates tried to kill themselves and other did themselves harm, according to freed political prisoners who spoke Thursday in Spain.

Those who spoke were among 11 political prisoners released this week and flown to Spain to start new lives. At a press conference in Madrid, they painted a squalid picture of the prison conditions they had endured.

"The hygiene and health situations in prisons throughout the island of Cuba are not terrible, they are worse than terrible," freed dissident Julio Cesar Galvez said.

"We had to live with rats and cockroaches ... with excrement. It's not a lie," he said...

He said that in the prison of Villa Clara there were more than 1,500 inmates with up to 40 prisoners in cells measuring 3 square meters (32 sq. feet)...

We could invite the Prison Authority in Cuba to observe how a proper, clean prison is run... at Gitmo. Maybe they, and some of the country’s leaders, could take a short vacation there as well.

Maybe some of our country’s leaders could fly down there and they could make it a conference, International Gitmo Prison Conference, duration 10-20 years.

"The hygiene and health situations in prisons throughout the island of Cuba are not terrible, they are worse than terrible,"

Sounds perfect for some of the Hollywood lefties who admire Castro and Cuba so much.

Let's sent Sean Penn there for a decade or two to help him discover how little he really knows about things he believes himself to be an expert on.

Maybe the Congressional Black Caucus who came home raving about what a great guy Castro is will volunteer to move in?

In the protein short society modern Cuba has become you’d think the prisoners would be delighted to find fresh meat in their cells.

here, it is typical the rats and cockroaches that commit the crimes, so why should they not do the time? BTW, I would like to see a lot more RATs in prison, lots more.

Time to make Cuba the head of some kind of prisoner human rights commission for the UN isn’t it? With work like that, they have to be rewarded.

with up to 40 prisoners in cells measuring 3 square meters

That's less than the average elevator. Physically impossible to fit 40 persons on that small an area. No doubt a Cuban prison is hell on earth, but this type of reporting shows yet again that the media are utterly stupid and worthless these days. Never ever believe a single word these idiots write. (Waiting for someone to post a pic of a "stuffed" phone booth or VW bug...:-))

it also said that was the equivalent of 32 square feet, so they obviously meant a room with dimensions of 3 meters x 3 meters

Did you miss that these guys were political prisoners?

Are they the only ones allowed to have rats as pets?

*groan*

1m = 3.3ft. 3m = 10ft. 3mx3m = 10ftx10ft = 100sqft. (appr. values) 3m^2 = 32sqft. The meant what they wrote. Only, they're idiots.

You might want to stop hurting your head with "math". ;-)

some people are good with math some are good with poetry some are great musicians ... we all have our strengths and weaknesses, maybe you can be a little more gracious to those who fall short of your strengths
