Bennett denies knowledge of home loan deals to staffers (defeated RINO's staff was highly corrupt)

Washington • Sen. Bob Bennett said Thursday he was unaware that anyone on his staff got special home loans through CountryWide Finance Corp. as alleged in a congressional letter delivered to the Senate Ethics Committee. But the Utah Republican said he would cooperate fully with any ethics investigation that takes place.

“I do not have a loan with CountryWide and I do not inquire as to where my staffers go to get their mortgages,” Bennett said in an interview with The Tribune.

“I have full faith in the integrity of the staff and the matter is going to be in the hands of the ethics committee and if the ethics committee decides to conduct an inquiry,” Bennett said, “I will cooperate with them fully and I will instruct my staff to do the same.”

Rep. Darrell Issa, the ranking Republican on the House Oversight Committee who has been probing a VIP program the mortgage giant ran, said in a letter that up to 30 Senate staffers got special sweetheart loans from CountryWide; at least 12 of the loans identified the applicant as an employee of “Senator Robert Bennett.”

Issa does not identify the specific recipients of the loans, which came in the early 2000s, and Bennett said he is unaware if any of those staffers are still employed by his office.

I would have thought Senate staffers would have to have filled out disclosure statements...

If this is so, CountryWide obviously expected a quid pro quo. Were any suspicious votes cast by the Congresscritter?

IMO, staffers are actually running Congress. They write the bills and apparently they're the only ones who read them when they're done. Pretty scary situation, not to mention depressing and maddening!

That’s an Obamaesque denial on his part. Who has accused him of asking his staffers where they get their loans? Now, his possibly being aware that so many of them were getting sweetheart deals, that seems to be another question.
