Cohen responded to a billboard that says Republican challenger Charlotte Bergmann will "whip" Herenton.
"She's first got to win her primary," Cohen said, "and she's got two opponents."
The winner of the Republican primary goes up against the Democratic primary winner in November.
Cohen said it was a waste of campaign money to put up such a billboard without knowing who Bergmann will be up against until the primary election on August 5.

Herenton is black and was a such thing in this district till he started...well to be Willie Herenton. He has run his mouth and acted so stupidly that he may actually manage to get beat. I live in this district.
So do I. Which is why I’m 100% behind Charlotte. I’ve been handing out literature for weeks now. Have more coming. I’ve got 2 extra yard signs if you want one. I’m in Scenic Hills off Whitten.
I looked on the news sights for the bill board but it is not up on any of their web sights yet.
Thanks for the word on Charlotte. Looks like the person I am voting for. Not sure how long a campaign sign for a Republican would last in my neighborhood. I live literally in the HOOD. I am right next to Sheffield High School and Goodlett elementary. Not to many Republicans around here.
Mine is a well mixed neighborhood, mostly professionals and hard working people. My neighbor is voting for Charlotte, they are black Americans. Are close to the Nike Plant. The sign may last as she is after all black, and they won’t know the difference.
I’m hoping Cohen and King Willie will bloody themselves up so bad, she will have the edge to win. Neither can attack her without looking either racist or sexist. She is soft spoken, well informed, but make no mistake she has a steel backbone like Sarah and Michelle Bachmann.
