The Clintons? Not in our back yard, says Bedford Hills
The Telegraph ^ | 7-19-10 | Melissa Whitworth

As the Clinton family closes in on a 20-acre residence near New York, the locals are less than happy, writes Melissa Whitworth.

The news that Bill and Hillary Clinton are moving to Bedford Hills in upstate New York has not exactly been received enthusiastically by the town's Wasp-y residents. Bedford is just an hour north of Manhattan: all rolling green hills, stone walls and 18th-century farmhouses, with the odd McMansion thrown in.

It's already home to celebrities including Glenn Close, George Soros, Ralph Lauren, Richard Gere (who owns a popular restaurant and Buddhist yoga studio there) and Martha Stewart – rumour has it that she doesn't let her horses out in the midday sun for fear of their coats bleaching, and thus failing to match the landscaping.

Yet open displays of wealth or influence are frowned upon. If you want to show off, you go next door to Greenwich, Connecticut, home of the hedge-fund billionaires where, entirely coincidentally, state taxes are much lower. There's even a mansion that's a replica of the White House, perfect for a former president.

The Clintons are popular figures in their current home town of Chappaqua. "They've been great, caring neighbours," said one resident, who had them over for barbecues and Superbowl parties. "I'd really be sad to see them go." But according to the feverish coverage in the press, they've got their eye on a property eight miles away called Clover Hill Farm, with 20 acres, a pool, koi pond and stables.

The Bedfordians are unhappy

Sound like a great place for a plague to visit! ;-)

Bullshit reigns. If it weren’t for BS this country wouldn’t be so deep in it.

People always publicly say they don’t want some famous moving in next to them, but in reality they’re giddy about it because it gives them something to brag about.

Ha! You don’t fool me. WASPs are thrilled when their tribe is still mentioned at all, so quickly have they been eclipsed—and so proud they are for having held to their frayed principles while being eclipsed.

You are wrong about that. We have property near DC that is zoned 5 acre tracts or more. Never would the majority of those folks want any celebrity out there because of privacy. For sure no Clintons!

Their best friend Soros lives there...why not them? They just want to be close to their chief financier.

I would put up with thousands like them, if luxury and comfort made them stop interfering with the rest of us.

All Presidents are the same. I don’t know any President who worked a real job before becoming President. Since Kennedy, Presidents have been spoiled kids whose parents or grandparents raised the money or lived off the government. Reagan was an Actor but that is not exactly normal work. President Bush owned a baseball team but if not for his father never could have done that. Yes all Presidents really have not worked hard in their lives. One thing for the Clintons at least is that they were not given anything. They started off with absolutely NOTHING but ten years later they were on the government dole forever.
