Glenn Beck: Does Presidential Assassination Program Exist?
Glenn Beck ^ | July 20, 2010 - 0:07 ET

Posted on 07/20/2010 1:18:26 AM PDT by nmh

There are allegedly "dozens of Americans" on this hit list who "pose a threat" to the United States. National Security Adviser John Brennan said this:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JOHN BRENNAN, NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER: There are, in my mind, dozens of U.S. persons who are in different parts of the world that are very concerning to us.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

So, we just shoot them on the spot and don't worry about their Miranda rights as American citizens? Now if it were on the battlefield — fine, I get it. But away from the battlefield?

...

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BRENNAN: Our enemy is not terrorism, because terrorism is but a tactic. Our enemy is not terror, because terror is a state of mind and as Americans we refuse to live in fear. Nor do we describe our enemy as jihadists or Islamists, because jihad is a holy struggle — a legitimate tenet of Islam meaning to purify oneself in one's community — and there is nothing holy or legitimate or Islamic about murdering innocent men, women and children.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

...

Obama campaigned on closing down Gitmo, because of all the horrors and atrocities being committed there. By the way, has anyone seen the story covered by Fox that Gitmo inmates are watching "Twilight" on brand new flat panel TVs? Sounds horrible, doesn't it?. But Obama said Gitmo had to be closed because it didn't line up with America's "values and ideals" ...

• Obama promised, if elected, to end the Bush administration system of warrant-less wiretaps. He believed it was an affront to human rights if phone calls to terrorists were monitored.

But it's totally cool to just shoot Americans suspected of terrorism?

The quotes we used a moment ago were from the far left-site Salon.com and the segment I watched was from the ever-conservative MSNBC:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GLENN GREENWALD, SALON: Look at the controversies that were created during the Bush administration, when the president got caught spying on American citizens without warrant or trying to detain them without due process. Here you're talking about something far more extreme. You're talking about targeting American citizens for murder, for assassination, based merely on the allegation that they're involved in terrorism. No evidence, no charges, no trial — nothing.

DYLAN RATIGAN, MSNBC: His actions create a massive cognitive dissonance that actually allows him to get away with more than George W. Bush could when it comes to encroachments on civil liberties, facilitating theft from the American people or potentially calling you or me a terrorist and trying to have us killed.

GREENWALD: Well, I know that that's the fact...

(END VIDEO CLIP)

I don't think I would have looked into this story if it had been reported on some GOP blog. But these guys are so in the bag for Obama, it bears investigating.

Assassinating American citizens without due process? What happened to Miranda rights? Even the ACLU expressed: "profound concern about recent reports indicating that you have authorized a program that contemplates the killing of suspected terrorists — including U.S. citizens — located far away from zones of actual armed conflict. If accurately described, this program violates international law and, at least insofar as it affects U.S. citizens, it is also unconstitutional."

Notice the ACLU says "if accurately described." We asked the White House if we are accurately describing the presidential assassination program and were told to call the CIA.

America, you are in trouble.

You still don’t believe me?

Even MSNCB and the ACLU are upset about this!

They are hardly “right wing” people.

Glenn Greenwald The administration defends its assassination program
By Glenn Greenwald

In the wake of Leon Panetta’s public defense of the targeting of American citizens suspected (but never charged or convicted) of Terrorism, Obama officials are now apparently going around the country and, with chest-beating rhetoric, overtly defending their right to target Americans for assassination with no due process of any kind:

“If someone like Anwar al-Awlaki is responsible” for part of a plot “to kill more than 300 people over the city of Detroit,” [director of the National Counterterrorism Center Michael] Leiter said, “I think it would be wholly irresponsible for citizens like me, Leon Panetta, Defense Secretary (Robert) Gates, and ultimately the president, not to at least think about and potentially direct all the elements of national power to try to defend the American people” . . .

A woman in the crowd who identified herself as an American Civil Liberties Union member asked why there was no judicial review of such kill orders, citing the standard warrant requirements facing a policeman before entering a citizen’s home.

Leiter explained that while “a police officer does need a court order to go after a house,” the lawman “has a right of self-defense if someone pulls out a gun.” The U.S. government, Leiter insisted, has the same right. He added that there is congressional oversight of such actions.

For several reasons, this is misleading in the extreme. First, nobody disputes the military’s right (or the police’s) to use force if they seek to apprehend someone and that person begins shooting at them. That situation has nothing whatsoever to do with the presidential assassination program, which authorizes targeted killings without any attempt at apprehension and no matter what the person is doing at the time: i.e., sleeping, riding in a car, watching television with their children, etc. (indeed, the administration has already tried to kill Awlaki in exactly this fashion without trying to apprehend him). If, as Leiter deceitfully suggests, this were only about the military or CIA’s use of force in the event that a suspect starts using violence during an attempted apprehension, then no presidential order would be needed because they already have that right, and there’d be no controversy. That’s just obvious. Instead, “[t]he Obama administration has taken the extraordinary step of authorizing [] targeted killing” of Americans. The police don’t have the right to put a bullet in the back of a suspect’s head while he sleeps or by sneaking up behind him while he walks on the street, which is the actual Police analogy to what the Obama administration is doing.

...

Just like with Caesar, Congress is irrelevant. Did you know that in 2012, businesses will have to do a 1099 for any purchase over 600 bucks? It’s a paperwork nightmare, especially for small businesses. A freelance artist buys a Mac, they’ve got to send the form to Apple. Was that in the financial or health care bill? Health care. Why? Power.

One branch has been eaten and the next branch is about to be. Without due process, our president can assassinate American citizens. We’re not talking about the power to regulate or the power to tax, but the absolute power to kill.

I want to ask the question that stumped two politicians I was with this weekend: What is the definition of a dictator? Where is the line? They didn’t seem to know the exact answer. I suggest we find it and quickly.

Media priorities:

Bush can spy on Americans without a warrant is a big issue.

But.

Obama can assassinate Americans without a warrant is not a big issue

This is NAZI stuff!

Look at the lengths this Obama goes to having a trial for TERRORISTS that tried to MURDER us. They admit it. They want to die. He wanted to have the trial in NYC at an astonomical cost.

Now Americans are the target. No trial. No nothing. Just shoot them if they FEEL the person is a “dangerous American”.

This is freaking NUTS.

It’s like NAZI Germany! The target will be Americans anywher that don’t agree with this Marxist dictator.

Confirmed: Obama authorizes assassination of U.S. citizen

By Glenn Greenwald

...

No due process is accorded. No charges or trials are necessary. No evidence is offered, nor any opportunity for him to deny these accusations (which he has done vehemently through his family). None of that.

Instead, in Barack Obama’s America, the way guilt is determined for American citizens — and a death penalty imposed — is that the President, like the King he thinks he is, secretly decrees someone’s guilt as a Terrorist. He then dispatches his aides to run to America’s newspapers — cowardly hiding behind the shield of anonymity which they’re granted — to proclaim that the Guilty One shall be killed on sight because the Leader has decreed him to be a Terrorist. It is simply asserted that Awlaki has converted from a cleric who expresses anti-American views and advocates attacks on American military targets (advocacy which happens to be Constitutionally protected) to Actual Terrorist “involved in plots.” These newspapers then print this Executive Verdict with no questioning, no opposition, no investigation, no refutation as to its truth. And the punishment is thus decreed: this American citizen will now be murdered by the CIA because Barack Obama has ordered that it be done. What kind of person could possibly justify this or think that this is a legitimate government power?

Just to get a sense for how extreme this behavior is, consider — as the NYT reported — that not even George Bush targeted American citizens for this type of extra-judicial killing (though a 2002 drone attack in Yemen did result in the death of an American citizen). Even more strikingly, Antonin Scalia, in the 2004 case of Hamdi v. Rumsfeld, wrote an Opinion (joined by Justice Stevens) arguing that it was unconstitutional for the U.S. Government merely to imprison (let alone kill) American citizens as “enemy combatants”; instead, they argued, the Constitution required that Americans be charged with crimes (such as treason) and be given a trial before being punished. The full Hamdi Court held that at least some due process was required before Americans could be imprisoned as “enemy combatants.” Yet now, Barack Obama is claiming the right not merely to imprison, but to assassinate far from any battlefield, American citizens with no due process of any kind. Even GOP Congressman Pete Hoekstra, when questioning Adm. Blair, recognized the severe dangers raised by this asserted power.

And what about all the progressives who screamed for years about the Bush administration’s tyrannical treatment of Jose Padilla? Bush merely imprisoned Padilla for years without a trial. If that’s a vicious, tyrannical assault on the Constitution — and it was — what should they be saying about the Nobel Peace Prize winner’s assassination of American citizens without any due process?

Obama hasn’t changed the patriot act either, so
Obama is spying on Americans without a warrant and the media don’t seem to call about this now

In other words if you are NOT a U.S.Citizen, you are entitled to due process and a fair trial.

If you ARE a U.S. citizen on Obama’s list, as a “dangerous citizen, you do not get due process or a trial. Instead you are assassinated? It was a typo - "assination" but maybe it was a Freudian slip. We are looking that way as a nation. I am LIVID. This is NAZI politics.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Patriot Act under W had a sunset and had to be reviewed annually and renewed by Congress. I had heard that Obama did away with it, so no sunset.
Can’t find the source.

I am of a differing mind. I think it was a mistake to take the assassination option off the table. Too many times since we have, situations that could have been nipped in the bud, have grown from annoyances into full fledged national security threats. I’m not trying to say that we should just kill any enemy that becomes a problem, nor that when we did, it always worked out, without unintended consequences...but it did solve several problems with one bullet, and saved many thousands from dying as a result. There *are* in this wiorld, individuals who on paper, are american citizens, but who have taken up arms against the US.

And frankly if the most optimal way to deal with them is two to the head, I have no problem with that. Some of these dangerous enemies might be here in the US, but I doubt those cannot be captured instead. But Capture or kill...implies that sometimes the best way to deal with an enemy is to *kill* them.

Surely an executive order would need to be signed, I doubt even Obama would dare to execute domestixc political opponants, if he knew that there were orders with his signature on them that could be revealed and a noose put around his neck for it. But I think it’s time Carters stupid ban on “wet work” in extreme situations, be revoked.

After reading everything I could readily find on this topic, I’m convinced that a Presidential Assassination Program can be a very good thing. I don’t, however, think our Executive Branch should choose the program’s targets....

Now if it were on the battlefield — fine, I get it. But away from the battlefield?

What if they are hanging with jihadis in a village in tribal Pakistan, Somilia, Yemen, or somewhere else that is basically outside of the reach of any law enfocement? They aren't on a battlefield.

The devil, as always, is in the details.
