(AP) With a new face and a 60th vote for breaking a Republican filibuster, Senate Democrats are preparing to restore jobless checks for 2.5 million people whose benefits ran out during a congressional standoff over deficit spending. President Obama says, "It's time to do what's right."

But first, Obama and his Democratic allies are pressing for maximum political advantage, blaming Republicans for an impasse that halted unemployment checks averaging $309 a week for those whose eligibility had expired.

My hope is that 100% of Republican-controlled state governments will say "thanks, but no thanks" to this. Most probably won't. But we should remember that in November! We can't afford endless welfare for people "between jobs." Probably 99.9% would find SOME kind of job without this.

We could open up millions of jobs right now if we'd 1)deport all the illegals 2) suspend all union contracts, 3) suspends the minimum wage and overtime pay laws and 4) abolish all forms of taxation on corporations.

There's MY jobs agenda!

Why only suspend tax on corporations? Why can’t my small business survive too? All my profits are taxed at the individual tax rate. There is no way I could compete with a corporation that has no tax rate.

I was interviewing a woman for a low level, part time assistant in my office and one of the applicants frankly told me that she would not take the job unless it paid more than her unemployment benefits because she was more interested in taking care of an ailing family member. I couldn’t really fault her but work ethic wasn’t there.

This unemployment extension will bring payments for 126 weeks. Why not give those who are unemployed 2,3,or 4 years of unemployment....or if we’re still surviving...unlimited unemployment!!! Whatever happened to common sense.....this is insane.

Extending unemployment relieves the Senate of societal pressure to reverse course on Socialism and loss of liberty.

Ending unemployment is pro-capitalism...it increases the pressure on our legislative body to terminate dead-end social and economic policy...and increase FREEDOM!!!

From Boortz
“For a man who is so concerned about the jobless that he is calling out the Republicans for failing to support the extension of jobless benefits, Barack Obama has managed to do his own share of jobless creation.”

“Well then explain to me why Obama would impose an offshore drilling moratorium — that has been struck down by the courts and not recommended by experts - at a heavy price. That price would be $2.1 billion in economic losses along the Gulf coast, 8,000 jobs lost and $500 million in lost wages. And that is all in just the first six months.”

Another extension puts them past the election, and just before Christmas to start debating another extension.

So, since BO is following “pay go”, where is the budget being CUT to pay for these benefits? (off sarcasm)

Isn’t there a provision with unemployment insurance which allow the recipient to earn a limited amount of other income (such as a part time job) without affecting their benefits?

I can’t speak for much more than my own states, but neither California nor North Carolina permits those on UI to work more than a small amount before benefits begin being cut.

It pays to remember what this is: payments to people whose employment has been terminated by their employers when there was not work available for the employee and when the employee could reasonably perform the required tasks, had the work opportunity still existed.

Democrats clearly are quite happy to use it to re-introduce permanent welfare by the back door. This trick goes back a long way, by the way. Augustus wasn’t the Emperor, y’see, he was Princeps, (First) Citizen. The Republic still existed, of course! The Senate still had to pass all legislation, how else? But...given Augustus also had the Tribunician Power, his person was inviolate and to even threaten him was treason per se. I think we’re headed that direction pretty quickly, don’t you? And the result will be equally the farce the Romans had to endure. Not that much of it continued to be funny, just that many simply checked out morally and spiritually, some going the Lohan route, some the Christian. All that differed was the direction they took on the hill, down or up.

What gets me is this, if unemployment benefits are a “stimulus” to the economy, as liberals contend, then why not use Stimulus money to pay for it, as the Republicans want to do?
