A Loveland man was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving and careless driving after his semi-tractor trailer careened off the roadway Monday night on Interstate 70, which started a brush fire and closed traffic lanes several hours.
Dale A. Van Vuren, 49, was hauling a truck, owned by Slager Trucking, loaded down with beer when the vehicle went off the roadway westbound around 9:40 p.m., near the interchange with Colorado Highway 65. The semi struck the median wall and rolled onto its left side, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The truck ended up blocking both westbound lanes, which were closed six hours, Troopers said. Traffic was diverted around the crash at exit 49. Sparks from the sliding semi started a fire that engulfed the truck and started a wildfire near the highway. Palisade firefighters were able to contain and extinguish the fire after 30 minutes.
Van Vuren, whose beer load was being transported from Loveland to Grand Junction, was arrested at the scene.
Chemical test results for Van Vuren were not immediately available, Troopers said.
In fairness... if there were beer cans strewn all over the median, maybe he didn’t start drinking until ~after~ the accident. The anguish of seeing so much beer potentially go to waste may have just been too much for him. :-)
He obviously wanted a bottle-opener...
Dale A. Van Vuren, 49, who weighs over 400 pounds and used to drive for “Little Debbie”...
if it was Coors, it was returned to its natural state. no loss but that’s gonna cost him a few points.
I assume that's just a joke.
Imagine, though...if someone who used to work for Little Debbie's, and weighed 400 lbs, applied for work driving a beer truck...
wouldn't you just figure it was a matter of time?
You know transporting Yuengling through Colorado is prima-facia evidence of bootlegging
Warm beer. Yuck.
That makes two beer truck accidents on I-70 yesterday.

The reporter didn’t mention what type of beer it was. It might be a tragedy or just a shoulder shrug. What do they teach these guys in Journalism school.
Maybe the beer company has a similar policy as the Blue Bell Creamery (ice cream) in Brenham TX: we eat (drink) all we want and we sell the rest!
....... dang Cooter I thought you stopped drinkin’ on the job !!!
