A conservative news-sharing website with plenty of experience in dealing with copyright issues has been sued for copyright infringement after Las Vegas Review-Journal stories allegedly were posted on its site.

Free Republic LLC, James C. Robinson and John Robinson, who are associated with the website www.freerepublic.com in Fresno, Calif., were sued in federal court in Las Vegas on Monday over the postings.

Don't see how this can happen, with the technology we have in place. Looks like Messr. Reid is attempting a shutdown of his critics.

Sounds like a newspaper in financial trouble attempting the “revenue through litigation” approach.

Yup, trolling for money.

Some of the pages of material on the right side of the forum, which I doubt if anybody looks at, should be replaced with a complete list of copyright media, instead of having to go to a seperate link everytime.

Sometimes those USA Ptooey’s aren’t free. They are added to your room bill unless you opt out of the delivery.

I agree. They have filed 75 lawsuits since March?
It sounds like they are trying to make their revenue from lawsuits. I hope they don’t keep getting away with this.

Yep. USA Today is banned from this site and can't be sourced; may as well add the Las Vegas rag to the list.

In other words, their website encourages article sharing. This sounds like entrapment. “here, share this article with your friends.. now... gotcha, we are going to sue you..”

I counted 19 different social networking links on the bottom of that LV RJ article webpage.

I hope they don’t keep getting away with this.

They are probably betting that most of these entities will just settle than spend money on lawyers and going to trial.

If Jim and John and FR LLC, and the ISP host for FR LLC were not sent DMCA takedown notices in compliance with the DMCA regulations, the FR lawyers should put forward a motion to dismiss and threaten to countersue.

EFF, FIRE, First Amendment Society, et al would surely pony up the pro bono legal expenses to press this case.

You’d think FR would fall under the safe harbor provision of the DMCA. Even an extreme example of copyrighted works posted online, YouTube, was recently ruled protected under the safe harbor provision of the DMCA.

The latest suits bring to 75 the number of copyright infringement lawsuits filed since March by Righthaven

Can't generate money by reader subscriptions so instead they sue a bunch of people.

The typical First Amendment advocacy organizations wouldn't touch Free Republic with a ten-foot-pole. Almost all are connected with left-wing politics.
