No, it’s a smart move. Had she run, she would have lost and she would have lost her House seat.
She made the right move. Her funds will be better spent hanging on to her seat in the House vs. using those funds to fight two battles.

MY QUESTION: Why has the WV GOP not been grooming any viable candidates who can win state-wide office, other than Capito, who is more Liberal than the Democrat Manchin, on some social issues? I BLAME THE WV GOP hierarchy.
I am not an expert on W Va but I thought she was a “Hippo” (RINO lite).
Shelley Moore Capito is a liberal Republican on par with Mark Kirk and Mike Castle. Polls currently show her as “the most competitive”, but don’t buy into that BS. We can produce a much more principled conservative to run for this seat. West Virginia is NOT a liberal state and it is staunchly anti-Obama.
I grew up in WV and you are absolutely right. When I was in High School and college in the 1960's, one of the most coveted summer jobs was to get on the State Road Commission. We were among the few Republicans in the area and I didn't stand a chance of landing one of these jobs reserved exclusively for the Democratic spawn.
I agree. The only way to beat Manchin is with an outsider type candidate who can run against Manchin, making Manchin the de-facto incumbent politician. Capito mad the right decision here.
I hope there turns out to be such a person. They’re not going to get much help from the RNC so, ability to self-fund would be ideal. There has to be someone there who fits the bill.
The WV GOP spent all of $10,000 on Wolfe's race against Rockefeller in 2008. The WV GOP is a disaster.

In the end, Capito’s camp was concerned about legal challenges that might put her House seat in jeopardy.
Unfortunately, I do not think there is a Republican that can beat Manchin. He might actually prove to be a surprise to the Democrats given many of his views.
Maybe they told her they would make sure she would up just like her Daddy.

Capito has a lifetime ACU rating of 70.11 while Castle has a lifetime rating of 52.49 and Kirk 57.50. I don’t consider Capito’s rating to be “on a par” with Castle and Kirk.
that was part of it, mainly it was a decision based on funds and polls. I’m not disappointed, I think it was a smart move on her part.
I’d love to have her as our Senator and it may happen at some point but she can’t win against Manchin. He’s too well known and too popular in this state.

But what did she have to lose if she could run for both offices at the same time? Manchin will be a lifetime senator.
Until the people start standing up and speaking out, and go to the poles and VOTE, then nothing is going to change. Rockefeller needs to go, and Manchin is the last person needed in Washington, but there again he puts on an apparent front of honesty, and thereby hoodwinking the populace in to believing he will do the job of bringing WV out of the stone age and next to last in education, jobs, housing, and so many other things. WV deserves what they vote.
She could go around taking Robert Byrd's name off of public properties in West Virginia on the same grounds.

possibly her House seat. If she devoted money to the Senate seat she may have come up short in the House race with her losing both seats and us losing a strong ally to the Democrats.
If people would have donated to her instead of the GOP, she’d have been in a much better position monetarily to handle fighting for two seats.

West Virginia has a low per capita income, yet has more new, state-of-the-art infrastructure than do states with twice its income.
West Virginia needs to get exactly what it deserves instead of raping the rest of the country.

To be fair though, she has voted for the pro-life position while in Congress. Maybe she just thinks that the Pro-Abortion is a position that modern liberated women have to take. It's a mystery to me.

I've seen just that since I moved here in '02. When I asked why people don't speak out I was told, "....because THEY know where you live."
Manchin will reliably vote against the entire enviroweenie agenda. He will vote in lockstep with the Dem leadership on everything else.
One cannot help but conclude that poor people are poor precisely because of a lack of drive, intelligence, and knowledge. States harboring large populations of such people tend to be poor...and stay that way.
As a WV resident, I beg the opportunity to correct you.
West Virginians are pro-life, pro-gun, pro-God, pro-family, pro-coal, and pro-military.
But when it comes time to vote, they forget all about that and vote pro-tax, pro-union, pro-lawyer, pro-pork, pro-corruption, and pro-choking down government cheese until they burst.
They are the perfect Mike Huckabee demographic, and my years of observing my WV neighbors account for the fact that I am so negative about "social conservatives".
Much of Ohio is the same way (I am from Akron.)

It’s a tough nut to crack.
They’re not educated, so they don’t drive their kids to be educated. Even if they do, their kids have nothing to look at as far as what an education gets them - there little rural town doesn’t offer much, so those who do get an education leave for a better place, leaving their hometown/home state in squalor.
WV, parts of VA, PA, OH, MI, and most of the rural South seems to fit into this trap.
