Gov't watchdogs: mortgage program is not working

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Government watchdogs are telling a Senate panel that the Obama administration's multibillion effort to help at-risk homeowners avoid foreclosure is not working and could put the economic recovery at risk.

Special inspector general for the financial bailouts Neil Barofsky said Wednesday that the program has not "put an appreciable dent in foreclosure filings," during a hearing on the $700 billion bank bailout before the Senate Finance Committee. He also said the Treasury Department has ignored earlier demands that it set clearer goals for the program.

Elizabeth Warren, who chairs a separate Congressional Oversight Panel on the bailouts, said Treasury's failure to act more quickly could be hurting the recovery.

More foreclosures could force down the price of homes and further hurt the already-ailing housing industry.

The homeownership program aims to reduce mortgage payments for millions of homeowners who can't afford their monthly bills. Recent data suggest it has helped about 400,000 households avoid foreclosure. About 530,000 have fallen out of the program.

The economy will NOT recover until the government gets out of its way! Businesses and individuals are hunkering down, not moving forward.

The "recovery" is at risk? There is no recovery. Only propaganda. The economy tanks faster and faster with each passing day.

Darn. I was hoping it would be a success so they would go forward with their “Who Wants A Pony?” program.

Of course the bailout program is not working. It can’t. People who cannot pay their mortgage cannot pay their mortagage no matter how you dress it up.

It’s not working because no one qualifies for the help. Everyone I know who applied has been turned down.

The program relies on voluntary cooperation from mortgage companies, Warren said. She said many of the mortgage debt collectors make more money when they foreclose than they do when helping homeowners.

Wait...what? You can't force companies to make business decisions as if they were a charity and not a for-profit organization? Obama, the One, can't insist that companies overlook that nonsensical bottom line in favor of helping people?

So now they will FORCE it.

clearer goals for the program? From this buncha clowns?

Didn’t Obozo promise number-one focus on jobs in 2010? Or was it free health insurance for his voters? Or more rules and taxes for private bankers, but none for the Freddy/Fannie asshats that helped Carter, Clinton, Dodd and Bawney Fwank cause the Great Recession? Or is his number-one focus immigration amnesty? Or Cap and Tax? Clear goals, from a man who’s only successes have been getting elected and moving on up because he’s “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy?”

Clearer goals, indeed

There is NO RECOVERY going on.

People are out of work!

It’s hard to refinance and pay off a mortage when folks don’t have job!

Businesses and individuals are hunkering down, not moving forward.

Amen.

Every day I look for ways to hunker down further.

A very astute businessman friend of mine said recently that he doubts he'll be doing an hiring for at least two years, maybe three. He reasons that Washington DC has no plan. He said it appears to him they are shooting from the hip. Thus he has no idea what the future may bring, so he is playing defense. Who can blame him?
