Texas A&M may drop free TP in dorms
Houston Chronicle ^ | Wednesday, July 21, 2010 | MAGGIE KIELY

Posted on 07/21/2010 2:29:28 PM PDT by Willie Green

Elaine Benes sits in a bathroom stall, pleading with a stingy toilet-paper hoarder to "spare a square."

"Excuse me. I'm sorry. This is, a, kind-of embarrassing but there's no toilet paper over here."

"Are you talking to me?" the stranger asks.

"Yeah, I just forgot to check. So, if you could spare some."

Nope.

More awkward banter.

"Three squares? You can't spare three squares?" Benes shouts.

The woman leaves after saying: "No I don't have a square to spare. I can't spare a square."

That famous scene from Seinfeld soon may be playing out thousands of times in dorm bathrooms across the Texas A&M campus.

It's come to that.

To save money, the Department of Student Affairs is considering shelving free toilet paper in the residence halls. Discussions still are under way, but it's likely that the larger dorm bathrooms — where four or more gather - will keep the necessary item in stock.

As an Aggie, I gotta say that this is funny, but it sure does signify how times have changed since I was there.

First how ‘bout cutting crap like “Poetry for Lesbian Basket Weavers” and giving the heave-ho to profs of worthless classes, and across-the-board salary cuts to all (ALL) staff and administrators.

According to the old Aggie joke, a hand is commonly referred to a five day Aggie handkerchief.

Perhaps this will now change if the article is correct.

The toilet paper savings would wipe away about $82,000 of the $2.2 million that Student Affairs has been charged to reduce in its operating budget

Sheryl Crowe says "Now, I don't want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required. "

Buying toilet paper would mean cutting the funds for the Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Student Alliance. This is a no brainer for the TamU administration.

These are only bathrooms that are shared by 4 (or fewer) people. So basically, it's the dorms that cost more anyway. If they want free TP, they can move into a cheaper dorm that only has a couple of larger bathrooms/showers per floor.

Wait a second, this has nothing to do with trains! :P

When I was very young, Mom & Dad would tell me to conserve toilet paper because that's what president Ford told Americans they need to do. I think it was refering to some speech he made, I dunno, I was like 3 or 4 years old.

As far as Aggies having to pay for toilet paper, the proposal will come to an abrupt stop once the Texas A&M admins realize that forcing students to provide for themselves will turn many students into free-thinking consumers apt to loathe socialism.

Normally the removal of central planning of an issue increases supply. Removing government doesn't cause outages.

Our daughter was Class of 08, and we bought her the TP in her bathroom. The stuff A & M provided was like 180 grit sandpaper anyway.

"And that big fella at the end of the bar ... that's my brother Billy Dale; another graduate of Texas A&M.
"And the hefty dude playing the jukebox ... That's my Uncle James, one more graduate of Texas A&M."

"Now think, mister. Are you sure you wanna tell your Aggie joke?"

I graduated in ‘84. I don’t see a problem with kids in dorms buying their own toilet paper.

You have to buy all the other bathroom items, so why not add toilet paper. Plus, you can get the nice kind.

Well, we bought most of the stuff for my daughter as well. She had a roommate the first two years and then became a dorm counselor. Her room cost went down, but she still had to buy some things.

I did not go to college, but if I had, it would have been TAMU. Both my sisters went to UT, but I despise that school.

Back when it was the SW conference, coach royal was asked which his second favorite school was and he said “Anyone who is playing against A & M” and then said, “Let me rephrase that. Any school who is beating the hell out of A & M”. I never have or will root for UT, no matter who they or what they are playing for, even the national championship.
