Several factors have aligned to hurt what was once a vibrant and reliable labor market, experts say. In some cases, unemployed older Americans or illegal immigrants have taken the jobs, while an increase in the minimum wage has made it too expensive for some employers to hire teens.
Small says that among a group of 25 friends, only one has found consistent work for the summer... In construction and landscaping, illegal immigrants have pushed teens out of jobs,
Its too expensive for us to hire teens that dont have experience, said Karin Devencenzi... also blames the minimum wage. At $8.40 an hour, Oregon has one of the highest minimum wages in the country.

Sadly I've seen teens make money selling pot. They have nice cars, dress well & don't care if you know what they're doing. We have a few teen dealers right here in my neighborhood. We even have state troopers who live here & the kids just don't care. It amazes me.
My daughter is only 10 months old and already started with a summer job.
Now she has 70 euros in the bank.
LOL! Maybe the white kids get to speak because they speak English.
I do not have TV anymore because of the propaganda. Avoiding all movies except a non lib Brit cast like the two Batman movies. Michael Caine is quietly pro-Tory though Cameron is no Thatcher, Gary Oldman probably a closet Repub and Bale hated his stupid step mother Steinem.
I was stuck on a plane and the seta in front had a Steve Carrel movie. He is pretty talented. It seems like everything he touches turns to gold.
only 10 months old and already started with a summer job...
She started earlier than me. Good start.
My buddies and I would get a nickle a bale hauling alfalfa out of the fields when we were in High School. I did it for my dad for free!!:)
I got 2 cents a bale when I was 13. These were 3000 bale farms. That was load and store in the barn.
The person in front was watching a film about windower from NJ who falls for his brother’s girlfriend. He just uses facial mannerisms and draws people in. No slpstick comedy like a Jim Carrey.
He seems like a decent guy and he appears to be a hot property in Hollywood.
Yer jest a young whippersnapper, ain't cha! Fast food paid $1.85 an hour when I started, and I had to walk uphill in the snow to work.
My son graduated this year and was looking for work to keep him busy until he leaves for college in the fall. He'd been trying all year to get on at Dairy Queen, Steak and Shake, local restaurants -- nothing. Then he got a call from Vector Marketing and he started selling Cutco knives. He loves it. He works his tail off from 7:00 AM til 8:00 PM setting up demos and calling contacts to get appointments to show his products.
According to him, the best part is that he updated his Facebook page to read "Employment: Weapons Specialist."
5 bucks? Are you kidding?
5 bucks is worth about 1 dollar in the real world...
To make a whole 50 bucks, a young person would have to mow 10 freaking lawns...
lol...
I know you don’t watch TV and the movie you describe I don’t know. Watch that 40 year old virgin movie though. It is funny as all get out.
I’m with the others on this one. A law degree is nothing but a license to steal. The last thing this country needs is more scumbag lawyers. These young people need to stop watching all these stupid law soap operas and then thinking they need to be an attorney. I have far more respect for someone who flips burgers for a living than gets a law degree.
At 12, I was spending the summer as a Soda Jerk at a local drive-in, while the other kids my age were doing Kings Island.
At 14, I was working 30+ hours a week at Ayr-Way (later became TARGET).
I worked Full time at AyrWay, and another Part-time in the summers, as well as bailing hay and detassling when it was time. After the Air Force, I was able to graduate from 4 years at a private college without owing one thin dime.
I turned out fine. Luckily, I was able to pass this trait on to my daughter.
Ooooh, you're so cruel...why not make a helpful suggestion, like maybe these young, budding liarslawyers should have been interning in DC where they'd be employed for life.
Unless, of course, they happen not to be minorities. Can't help that.
>> I have had no less than 12 men ask if they could cut my grass in the past month.
A few days ago, a well dressed, clean cut man complimented Obama for providing the extended two-year unemployment assistance he and others desperately needed. The compliment was part of the unemployment propaganda stunt Obama pulled on the Republicans.
While I want no person to suffer from the consequences of unavoidable unemployment, I found this Obama fan’s story odd. Two years without work? What does one do between mailing resumes? Maybe I misunderstood him.
I commend those 12 men for seeking your patronage.
12 is interesting number - reminds me of the 12 Disciples.
Yeah, we have two of them. They’ve applied for about 30 jobs each. They really get tired of hearing they don’t have experience, even entry level, since they’ll never get experience until someone hires them! In addition to that, they’re competing against lots of folks who are out of work, and who DO already have experience.
I commend them as well.
Had I been in their circumstance I would have done exactly the same.
It was a nickle a bale split between four of us. We also had to stack it in the barn.
