Arizona Cops Not Happy With J.D. Hayworth Over Paul Babeu Comments (Attack backfired)
Phoenix New Times ^ | Jul. 22 2010 | James King

J.D. Hayworth's criticism of John McCain over a TV ad featuring Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu seems to have backfired.

Since calling on McCain to pull the ad because Babeu called in to a white-supremacist radio show -- apparently without knowing it was a show for racists -- Hayworth's now taking his lumps from Arizona lawmen defending the sheriff.

This afternoon, the Arizona Fraternal Order of Police put out a press release calling on Hayworth to retract his comments about Babeu and demanding an apology.

"We're about to enforce SB1070, and the White House doesn't trust Arizona Peace Officers to enforce the law without racially profiling," says Sergeant John Ortolano, president of the AFOP. "It is unfortunate that J.D. Hayworth has agreed and now wrongly attacked Sheriff Paul Babeu."

"David Duke, Paul Babeu, John McCain -- certainly the senior senator from Arizona does not want to be at that party."

The AFOP says the comments crossed a line.

"The former congressman should know better than to attack law enforcement for political gain, and he needs to retract his statements and apologize to the Sheriff," Ortolano continues.

We contacted Hayworth's campaign to see if he had any plans to apologize. Nobody's gotten back to us yet.

Difficult to hold yourself out as the law and order candidate when the police themselves suggest you are a clueless fool.

Does this mean the last hope of dislodging McCain is shot in his own foot?

JD shoots himself in the foot!
I will vote for him, because he is not Juan, but not because he has run a good campaign.
I don’t believe he is a RINO or potential RINO (finger crossed)

Good grief, he’s not even close to being a RINO. He has a 98% ACU rating.

I don’t know much but I do know that it’s not uncommon for a union’s members to disagree with the leadership. I wonder how many rank and file cops share the critique of Hayworth and are going to vote for him over McShame.

So, is this ‘The Political Cesspool Radio Program’ a “white-supremacist radio show”?

Maybe it depends on which Jouno-list you consult.

That's what I want to know. Seems like the sheriff should have known, if it really is a “white-supremacist radio show”.

Why did JD even go there in the first place. You got racism dominating the news this summer - does he think he'll get a free pass from the Left on this? What was his strategy here?

Hayworth stop worrying about what McCain is doing. Just stick to the issues. Tell the people of AZ what your ideas are. Border security, low taxes, reining in spending, stopping the Obama regime. Getting into a pissing match with McCain is only going to guarantee your political tombstone. Well it doesn't matter because the second Hayworth loses everybody will scream that it's Sarah's fault anyway.

HX says:
Does Ortolano really want to go down this road? Whatever you make of Hayworth, he did point to a fact. Not a fact about law enforcement generally, but about one man. Even Babeu admitted an “error,” and many Arizona law enforcement officers, like other Arizonans, find his actions, on this and other occasions, unsettling at least.
So if Ortolano wants to pretend that justified criticism of one uniformed politician for palling around w/ extremists & white supremacists is somehow an attack on all Arizona police, he only raises questions about himself. Does he think Babeu is above criticism? If he really thinks the fact that Arizona is about to enforce this already fraught law is a reason to demand that everyone ignore racial provocations by the people charged w/ enforcing it, he needs to find another profession.

(I copied this from a comment left at the article because it’s spot on, IMNSHO)

Well, maybe not the “already fraught law” part, whatever that means. (I guess I should stick to writing my own posts in the future).

J.D.’s ad was the topic of discussion on Phoenix based KFYI talk-show radio this morning. This is the generally conservative station where J.D. had his afternoon program and the hosts are supportive of him.

They explained that the Sheriff had been invited on the questionable show without knowing that the host had lauded David Duke. When the Sheriff found out that the radio show had white-supremacist leanings he issued a very good apology.

The KFYI analysts thought that J.D. had taken a wrong turn by sliming Babeu in order to get to McCain.

Based on several situations like this, I had already concluded that J.D. does not show good political judgment. I support him, but I wish he were more astute politically. This is because principles are far more important than political judgment.

Bingo!

You are both right. I am SO tired of seeing the ads with Babeu and McCain. I was very surprised at first to see so much support from Babeu for MCain. The one with them walking through the desert was awful.

The blue wagons circle themselves again, which should have been expected. Who gives a darn that Babeu, who as a cop ought to himself have known better, got suckered into calling a racial supremacist radio show. In a saner time, the response to Babeu would have been at least a “tsk, tsk.” Politics can be complex.

Is McCain saying, like Peppermint Patty in Peanuts, “My sweet Babeu?” :-)

Thank you for the insight.

Residing in Kalifornia, and given its past and present representation, I'm hardly in the position to critique the political choices made by the good People of Arizona. But as viewed by one from an adjoining state and one who has also been adversely affected by the ILLEGAL hordes, and for the good of this country, it is clear McCain simply must go.

I understand that, but my fingers are crossed because DC is very, very corrupting, and JD isn't running strictly on principles, but is trying to be cute with side issues.
That doesn't bode well, in my mind, to expect he will withstand the corrupting assault that is DC lobbyist and associated money peddling criminals.
