New push to get guns off Minneapolis streets

Standing before "Phoenix Rising," a statue made from hundreds of melted-down guns, law-enforcement leaders set out an initiative to battle the violence that has taken 29 lives in Minneapolis this year -- far eclipsing the total for all of 2009.

The plan: to prosecute more cases of illegal gun possession in federal court, where sentences often are longer and often without parole.

The message: Commit a serious or repeat gun crime in Minneapolis, and you will face serious prison time.

Thursday's news conference was more than just a policy discussion. As officials laid out Project Minneapolis Exile, mothers of slain young men held each other, sobbing. They were dressed in red, to signify the blood that has been shed and that binds them together.

Novel idea. Actually putting the bad guys away for the time they deserve. Something we all have been clamoring for for years. Actual enforcement of the laws that are already on the books.

However, it will still be legal to be an illegal in Minneapolis, as it is a sanctuary city.....

“Project Exile” worked pretty well for Virginia. Providing for mandatory harsh sentencing of people convicted of carrying a gun during the commission of a crime. Of course you won’t hear these people of the role the NRA played in it.

I’m just curios...

With the huge spike in gun crimes (and all crimes really...) in cities all across the nation. Places reporting a rise in such acts over last year.

Has anyone stopped to think this “spike” in gun crimes is the result of so many people out of work, no money, no jobs and no hope of any jobs in the future?

I’d like to see the numbers for the years prior to the economy falling off a cliff. I’d also like to see how these spikes relate to area unemployment and duration of those out of work.

I bet if someone honestly dove into these numbers, we just might find an answer or two.

Just saying...

It’s always the guns that do the killing, not the gang bangers and drug dealers. Why not get the gang bangers and drug dealers off the streets?

They believe that they’re going to, with this new ‘get tough’ policy....

There still won’t be any deportations, though....

law-enforcement leaders

Translation: Leftist political apparatchik gun grabbers.

This is about subject (the disarmed citizen) control NOT criminal control.

I know this is off topic but since this is about Minnesota, I hope there will be an investigation into the voter fraud that catapulted Al Franken into Congress.

Convicts and ex cons should not be allowed to vote and if they did those votes should not be counted.

My mom lives in a Mpls. suburb and was decrying the killings, and the guns. As a good son I try not to argue with her, but did mention something about it’s the criminals and not the guns. “Well, I don’t know, but just last night some man was shot outside of a bar....”

The next day I read about it on FR. It was the shooting outside of “Grumpys”. Turns out a patron that was tossed out came back with a knife. After cutting the bouncer, the bouncer defended himself with his gun and killed the guy. I’ll see if I can work that into my phone call next time!

And it sounds like they ARE going about this the right way with stiffer sentences. Rather than some stupid gun buy-back (like the dumb statue). Wouldn’t this title be better as “New Push to Get Criminals Off Mpls. Streets”?

Just imagine how sad it would be in a war with a battalion of Minneapolis militia defending. Defended by a bunch of girly men - defeat guaranteed.

This is all talk from the government bodies.

They will never do this. Gun enhancements to crimes always get dropped as part of plea bargaining.

DA offices are notorious for pushing for them (to give lip service to the public) and always dropping them in plea bargains. Always.

They tried the same thing in Baltimore years ago.

5 year no parole sentences for any gun crime.

Guess what happened? The city juries almost never convicted. So now it’s back to the same old thing - cop a plea, get 2 years, be out on the street in 9 months.

Liberals do not care about victims of crime. Liberals are soft on crime and criminals. They have always been. If one lives in a community or a city that is constantly being ravaged by gangs, drugs and killers, vote every single dem out and then you will see the beginning of a turn around.

I think the other thing that must be done along with your idea, is to have a movement in the city by the tea party folks, to pressure the media to report fairly. That is, to threaten (if you still pay for papers) or threaten never to buy their rag again, unless they start being objective and getting some conservative reporters and editors in place and balancing their coverage. Point out all the things everyone notices about their biases - stories they omit reporting because it hurts libs/democrats, no other opinions but liberal ones, etc.

And start sending this stuff to the editors, to their board members, that you’ll be boycotting their news and their sponsors. Get lists of sponsors for the tv news and see who’s advertising in the paper and write them that you won’t be buying anything unless THEY put pressure on the media to clean up, cover news in a true unbiased professional way, don’t omit news that hurts your buddies, etc.

The only thing they will respond to is their money being threatened to go away, papers and tv news IS A BUSINESS.

This is critical because otherwise if you do get a bunch on conservatives in, they have to actually be able to promote ideas and plans and have a media that’s going to report facts about what they want to do and this pressure is critical to let the media know ‘we’re watching their coverage’ and we’ll put pressure on them if they aren’t doing their job right. They are a business and if they want customers, they better do what the customers want. We want equal coverage, fair coverage, unbiased coverage, and we know when we don’t get it.

What they need to to is to get violent Somali criminals off the streets. And back to Somalia, as soon as they have served their terms.

Yes that would be much better and more accurate, a new push to get criminals off the streets!

If you want to get bad-guns off the streets, saturate those very streets with good-guns.
History shows that when restrictions on the self-defense of the would-be victim are loosened their victimization-rate drops; as a biblical example, I suggest one reads the book of Esther wherein the Persian king passes into law [which cannot be altered] permission for the Jews to be slaughtered at the behest of a trusted advisor. Unbeknownst to the king, his queen is of the Jewish race and plead that he allow the Jews to gather together and defend themselves.

I suppose, as an appeal to greed (which now seems to be the major motivating force behind ‘law enforcement:’ issuing revenue-enhancing tickets/citations) I would propose a $5 fine on any Eligible Citizen for *not* carrying a gun in public.

The city budget only allows for $50k water fountains, not
law enforcement.
