The minis, along with 46 dogs, were surrendered by an owner who could no longer afford them.
Earlier this week, a Texas horse owner has voluntarily surrendered a herd of 105 Miniature Horses to the Houston SPCA. The owner also gave up 46 dogs. She admitted she was not financially able to care for the massive number of animals she had bred, but was allowed to keep some of her animals with the SPCA monitoring their care.
The owner cited the bad economy as the reason she was unable to care for her animals. However, local CBS affiliate KBTX reported that the owner had over 140 minis and 80 dogs on a three-acre ranch, an arrangement that would be unsustainable even in a prosperous economic climate.
The animals are reported to be underweight and the horses are in need of proper hoof care, but they are all expected to recover. Investigators report that the animals seem friendly, but they will undergo health and behavior screening before being made available for adoption.
The Houston SPCA is seeking assistance in the form of volunteer veterinary and farrier care, as well as donations of mini-sized halters. To make a donation or find out about fostering or adopting any of these horses or dogs, visit www.houstonspca.org
140 on 3 acres? This woman should be in prison.
As I understand it there are millions of vacant ‘Casas’ in Mexico which could easily house horses. No one seems to know where the occupants disappeared to!!
And 80 dogs.
If I was younger and had the land needed for horses, I would take a few!
Isn't the adage for proper keeping of horses is one acre per? I know we have one of these miniature horse farms near us and they probably have 30 acres with maybe a dozen horses tops.
Yup.
I was wondering how to turn this thread into a discussion about illegal immigration . . . thanks.
They don’t have a glue factory?
They are merely eating the hay that real Horses won’t eat.
I was wondering how to turn it into a discussion of high speed trains.
Houston, eh? Do you think that these ponies were sympathetic to the Confederacy?
I have contacted all the horse rescue people and organizations I personally know, and sent them the link. Here is hoping and praying these poor animals can find forever, loving, and safe homes.
Midgets need transportation too!
I am forever involved in the PMU rescues out from Canada as the farms close down. Two years ago a group of model horse hobbiests saved 90 pregnant mares, and 80 or so additional foals, so closed to 300 horses in all saved. Here is hoping we can find enough people to stand up and take care of adopting these little guys, and we cannot forget the dogs either.
OH how I wish we were already out on our little 7.5 acres I’d take a few of them off of their hands in a heartbeat. Would love to have a breeding pair or two.
FYI
Maybe 4-H club members could take some in.
bttt
Mida’ bin.
I’d take two... can you put two minis on one acre?
You are sick. And funny.
You should know that, in our politicians’ infinite wisdom, there are no more “glue factories” (for horses) in the United States. Now, we pack them into trailers and ship them to Canada or Mexico.
In June of 2009, I emailed the “Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society” in College Station (just a few miles down the road from this location) about my concerns for these animals. Their director responded that she would look into it. After no response for weeks, I inquired as to the status, and she said that someone had been out there and found “a lot of minnies” but they were “in acceptable condition”. As we know now, these folks dropped the ball big time; thank God that the Houston SPCA are more competent and diligent, and were able to save the day before it was too late.
Moral: don’t trust the local well-wishers...if you don’t see some real action on your animal neglect concerns, contact law enforcement and stay on top of the issue until you get some concrete documentation that someone has really investigated the situation thoroughly.
When I was younger I worked for Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore.
To get there I had to cross Curtis Creek.
There was a rendering plant there.
Just the memory of that smell makes me queasy.
After I made the wisecrack about the glue factory I was sorry I did,
because it brought back the memory of that stench.
The Lord paid me back for being a smartass.
It’s not very likely that an equine humane society has the capacity to deal with 140 animals, even if it legally was allowed to do so.
I have no idea but figured with 7.5 acres with 1/2 fenced that it could easily support 4.That would be .93 acres for each horse and they really aren’t even as big as a Great Dane is.
I wasn’t asking them to seize them... just to check on their welfare.
