they’re actually restricted to families with children younger than 18 and there is an income restriction as well.

What are they doing having children if they can't afford to feed them?

How much you want to bet that most of them drove their cars there, leaving the pets and flat screen TVs at home.

I like your tag-line, which you should realize applies to the economy today.

Why do you (and so many here) not accept the possibility that poverty has become a huge problem due to this Obama/Democrat Depression?

I’ll bet 99% of the people in the line were already receiving gubmint benefits. They wanted more gubmint stuff for free.

The most insightful reply (and one had to dig for it)

Marlene Schuberg, (10 hours ago)
There is no doubt a great need at this time with the poor economy, BUT...

I have been running a food bank at my church in Southern California for more than thirty years, and many of the same families (third generation) have been there longer than I have. There is no problem when we give out the food that has been donated by our parish members. We can use good judgement is distributing food in an equitable and fair manner, but........the problem is on days when we give out USDA products.

The dirty secret that most people don’t know is that the government has placed great restrictions on verifying that the people who get food really need it. We are NOT allowed to ask for identification or any verification of income. People are asked to sign the USDA form stating that they fall within the guidelines, but since we cannot check ID they are free to sign any name they wish. Try doing that on April 15th!

On the days we give out USDA products, we must give out equal amounts to people, regardless of need, on a first come first served basis. Although I know many of the families are going from food bank to food bank, I may not deny them. When I mentioned this to the federal monitor she said that the family must really be hungry. She had no response when I told her about families SELLING the food for money for drugs. NO PROBLEM THERE.

Many families with grown children and grandchildren apply individually so that they receive multiple boxes of food.

The truth is that the federal government loves the inflated numbers of people needing help as it increases the funding for their various programs. In fact, under the rules....if I give one can of government food to a person even one time during the year, the government counts them as a person being fed by the program Remember that when you read the government reports on poverty.

Since I am not paid, I have a different perspective. When you read about most people running these programs, remember that their job is dependent upon having people in need....the more the better.

Sadly, we are in a time when so many people who have worked hard all of their lives are now in need. These are the people our government should be helping. Not those who have been sitting around taking, taking, taking everything except responsibility for their own lives.

The saying around L.A. on food distribution days is TELEGRAPH, TELEPHONE, TELL A FRIEND! Pretty sad!

How is this possible. VP Biden has told us the time for heavy lifting is over and that the Obama administration has won the battle for jobs and prosperity. Are you sure this is not just a Republican plot to embarrass “THE ONE”?

Why do you (and so many here) not accept the possibility that poverty has become a huge problem due to this Obama/Democrat Depression

Unless I misread the article, the food was paid for by a $2,000,000 "grant" from the government. So rather than allowing the people who worked for that money to keep it and spend it on their needs the government robs them at gunpoint and uses it to reward the indolent for their shiftless behavior (ie buy votes for democrats). Poverty is ALWAYS a problem, but if you reward do-nothing behavior, then you get more of it.

I guess it boils down to why are people poor. Poverty is the natural state of mankind. Except for people like the Kennedys none of us are born with a fortune in hand. We get rich (or at least less poor) by working hard and making good life choices. Like not having bastards and expecting our fellow citizens to pay for them, by saving our money rather than spending it on instant gratification like beer, drugs, cigarettes, and lotto tickets. One or two bad life decisions don't keep you poor. A steady history of laziness, self indulgence, and irresponsibility do. Everyone I know (with one exception - CABG big medical bills) who has money problems has strictly themselves to blame (eg one who ran up $35,000 in on line gambling debts, another who quit his job every time he got offended by the boss, another who did the absolute minimum to reach teachers' retirement, and now complains that isn't enough, etc), and here we are squandering the hard earned dollars of those who worked hard. This crap disgusts me.

I bet several people would have been killed in the stampede if a border patrol truck and bus had pulled up.

I don't totally disagree. My point is there are indeed many victims of this Government's agenda, people who made all the right moves and are now suffering because of the actions which this Government has taken. While poverty is always a problem, I submit that poverty is now a much, much bigger problem. But, of course, you would never hear about it from the MSM.

What really makes me angry is how this Administration has ruined so many lives. Many of these people who now find themselves in a state of poverty were people who played by the rules, worked hard and generally made what were considered the right moves in life. Now, their jobs have been eliminated, they have burned through any savings they had, and they cannot find jobs which will even pay for food to feed their families. The Obama Government indeed has it's boot on a throat, the throat of the American economy. That's the utopia which these scoundrel's ruling the Government have created.

I'm working for and praying for a major change come November.

Bingo. Most in poverty are there because of the choices they made. Those who aren’t shouldn’t receive anything for free. They should work for it (volunteering, etc.), and NONE of our tax dollars should fund any of it. Churches, charities and friends and family used to be the resources for the poor, not the government. It should be that way again.

I became suspicious about food banks/pantries some a few years ago when I saw a picture in my local paper of some woman who was said to be hurt by what was claimed to be a reduction in the contributions to the local food pantries. The woman was HUGE!!! and I don’t mean vertically. I wonder if anyone has ever done a study on the people who show up at food pantries. If someone is actually hungry and a real victim of circumstance, I’ll give them a free meal.

No argument from me there, but looking at the enlarged pictures of the line, I don't see anyone who looks like they're starving. I see plenty of able bodied males. I see one girl in what appears to designer jeans. I see a lot of not too old cars. In short I see what to my eyes appear to be mostly people capable of work, but standing in line for a handout instead. I see one scrawny old guy who looks like he needs help, but the rest look like parasites to me.
