Rangel: Resigning now would be un-American By Bridget Johnson - 07/24/10 04:19 PM ET

Embattled Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) said Saturday it would be un-American of him to resign in the face of a looming ethics trial.

The Hill first reported Friday night that Rep. Betty Sutton (D-Ohio) had called on Rangel to step down, the first sitting House Democrat to do so.

The New York Daily News reported Saturday that Rangel, speaking to reporters at Harlem Hospital, brushed off the call to give up his seat.

"Well, it wouldn't be the American thing to do," he said. "I think I owe it to the process to find out first what the investigative committee finds out."

"...I really never heard of that concept that if someone accuses you of something, why don't you just step aside so you don't embarrass anybody and admit to something that you don't believe is true."

Rangel also addressed why he didn't settle the case, which would have avoided a trial but forced the congressman to admit ethics violations.

"I don't know how I can make a deal when no one knows what they've found," he said.

Not un-American. It’s very un-Congress to accept responsibility for your actions, but not un-American.

Whether you agreed or not, Nixon had class. He resigned rather than drag us through impeachment, and did not contest the 1960 election despite the large voter fraud.

And now it is the right thing to drag our country through the muck?

What a bunch of scum.

He is going to learn from the investigative committee what they find out about him. Until then he will be in the dark.

Technically, he’ll be dragging the “most transparent (Democrat) congress in history” through the much, and I’m rather ok with that.

Oh, please! How many times has Rangel (let alone other Dems) demanded the resignation of Pubbies for smaller infractions over the years. What a sociopath.

This is only true in the perverted, narcissistic, disingenuous mental machinations of a liberal. And, just think, they are now controlling the White House, the Senate, and the House.

Time for a wholesale change.

Sorry Charlie. I gotta call BS. IIRC, you've been "negotiating" with the ethic panel for two years. You know exactly what your crimes are. And you know exactly what they've found.

You're an old man Charlie. They're not gonna exonerate you. Why not just resign, take your extremely generous pension and ride off into the sunset. Time to be a gentleman Charlie. I suspect you constituents will cheer you.

But here's other evidence of his speaking at the event:

Reember what happened to Tom DeLay? He hasn't even been tried yet after 4 years, the Dem prosecutor in Texas can't win the case. The accusations about Rangel are more comprehensive, yet he remains? The dem black caucus is paraitic, remember Jefferson from Louisiana? The broccoli bag man? The Repoblicans saved The black caucus A$$ by denying FBI access to his Congressopnal office, they could have rolled up the entire African kick back payment operation.

The whole Congress is dirty, until proven otherwise, the people have no representation, most of them are felons.

This allows the Qbama junta to get its way through extorting them.Rangel would not go along. His destiny may be to take his grave beside Sec. Commerce Ron Brown. Maybe he will sing like a canary before.

Veeeeeeeeery interesting Charlie:
"I think I owe it to the process to find out first what the investigative committee finds out."

"I don't know how I can make a deal when no one knows what they've found"

Now if I'm a prosecutor those statements are gonna make my ears perk up and I'm going to start digging, DEEPER(1). As 'Cadillac Charlie' doesn't say he's not guilty, or hasn't done anything illegal - just that he doesn't know what they have on him.

Ergo, this guy has mucho skeletons in his political closet. It's not just that 'little' Income Tax thing he's worried about.

(1) just like when Blago's FIL (Ald Dick Mell) called him a crook on the floor of the Chicago City Counsel. That's when the Feds started tapping his phones. It wasn't about Barry's senate seat. That was just gravy.
