Public utility pleads most forcibly for the general distribution of the Holy Scriptures. The doctrine they preach, the obligations they impose, the punishment they threaten, the rewards they promise, the stamp and image of divinity they bear, which produces a conviction of their truths, can alone secure to society, order and peace, and to our courts of justice and constitutions of government, purity, stability and usefulness. Hey, if you're happy in your belief, fantastic and good for you.
But the founding fathers wanted men to be free. Free from religious dogma and superstitious nonesense and anything else which would inhibit freedom.
I don't see a lot of light between a religion which tells you that if you don't believe, you're going to be tortured for all eternity (Christianity) and a religion which says we'll kill you now if you leave our religion (Islam).
My guess is that without those threats, a lot of people would open their eyes to reality and change their views as to the origins of the universe and how we got here.
Sounds like both are very coercive and threatening in their approaches - and that doesn't sound like FREEDOM to me.
