"With the 85-and-older population growing faster than any group in the country, gun ownership among the very old is increasingly a concern of adult children, who worry that elderly parents will commit suicide or shoot someone they mistake for an intruder," Dale Russakoff writes in The New York Times' "The New Old Age" blog.

I've always and consistently maintained anyone who can't be trusted with a gun can't be trusted without a custodian. But even then, we need to ascertain the ability of the custodians to provide security care in addition to everything else.
We have an aging population. Many of us still have parents, others of us are starting to realize we ourselves aren't getting any younger. The decisions we are or will be faced with aren't easy ones. That means there is no one-size-fits all solution where we can just pass another "gun control" law and consider the problem solved.
We need to have this discussion in the gun community, to develop tools and resources to help us help ourselves and our loved ones.
Or we could just let government take over and make the best decisions for us.

And who decides who is elderly?
You mean they can remember where their guns are?
They know where thier gums are. Sheese, Its locating the teeth thats the problem. :)
That’s funny. have a great day.
OMG!
Guns?
What guns?
I sold all of mine at one of those “no questions asked buy-back sales”...
...it was many many years ago...
...can’t exactly remember when...
...but I took the money to a casino and lost it...
...wink wink nudge nudge.
I am genuinely concerned. lol
>>Id say that the elderly are the LAST ones youd want to try to take a gun from.<<
Because ......when an older person decides they are unable or too tired to fight with you, they’ll just kill you.
I was thinking along other lines. Like they were raised in an era where people had SCRUPLES.
A man’s home, his possessions....were his. Until/if he decides to give them away.
Not only that, man, they’re freaking ORNERY!!! :)
I pity the fool who tries to go after my MOTHER’S guns...
What a co-ink-i-dink!
>>Not only that, man, theyre freaking ORNERY!!! :)<<
Lady, You’d better say that with a smile on yer face. Not only am I an ornery old buzzard, I’m grouchy too. (nasty grin)
I ain’t scared of you! Ha!
You just ruined my day. Humph!
Is that how you wanted me to word it??? I deleted the instructions..
I see your PMS is bothering you today. You can stop growling ‘cause you’re scaring the dogs.
They can have my guns, one bullet at a time!
Unfortunately, it isn’t. Spend a little time in South Florida. Families here tend to be fairly well aware of what their elderly parents are up to. There are elderly people who have lost the ability to deal with reality. Mostly, the children ignore the guns until a paid caregiver complains about grandma whipping out her old .38.
When this happens, the family can no longer ignore the problem. Grandma or grandpa is senile and armed. If the family loses the home healthcare, the parent goes to a nursing home. If they take away the guns, they must finally admit that their parent is no longer the responsible and mature adult that gave them life and raised them.
I’m in the middle of this now. Although my mother never owned firearms, it is not easy to accept the fact that she is no longer mentally competent to have one.
