US condemns massive leak of Afghan war files

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The White House denounced a massive leak of secret military files that allegedly describe how Pakistan's spy service aids the Afghan insurgency, but said the information was no surprise.

In all, some 92,000 documents were released by the web whistleblower Wikileaks, containing previously untold details of the Afghan war through Pentagon files and field reports spanning from 2004 to 2010.

According to the New York Times, one of the first three media outlets to review and report on the leaks, they "suggest that Pakistan, an ostensible ally of the United States, allows representatives of its spy service to meet directly with the Taliban."

Britain's Guardian newspaper said the files, many of which detail growing numbers of civilians dying at the hands of international forces as well as the Taliban, painted "a devastating portrait of the failing war in Afghanistan."

The White House issued its condemnation shortly before the leaks were posted online, saying the information could endanger US lives but also pointing to the administration's long-held doubts about links between Pakistan intelligence agents and Afghan insurgents.

"The United States strongly condemns the disclosure of classified information by individuals and organizations which could put the lives of Americans and our partners at risk, and threaten our national security," said White House National Security Advisor James Jones.

Wonder if the leaked documents discuss the mountain of copper and other metals the Chinese have laid claim to. That’s got to be a significant economic consideration in Afghanistan.

Lots of raw stuff to build an economy on there instead of opium and arms trading.., much like Africa, just need the Taliban to get onboard. They know the hills so they could help identify good places to mine.

The Vietnamisation of Afghanistan nears completion. Who would have guessed that the role of LBJ would by played by Obama.

The first in that line is Harry Truman. He invented stalemate war, Lyndon Johnson followed in his footsteps, and now Zero.

They were all democrats.

Let’s see how serious they are about the leaks. Let’s see how they charge the little liberal POS Army Spec 4 that passed them to Wikileaks.

In what way?

It's a good question. I honestly don't know. Since his decision to do the interview and it's fallout, which I've always thought was intended and foreseen, I've often thought he's on a psych ops mission to undermine what he thinks is inhibiting our war effort. I could be way off base but things are rarely as they seem and I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop since he made his move. Is this crazy thinking..? I'd be the first to admit it.

Apparently due to a SCOTUS ruling the government has no legal recourse on the media even if these files had been stolen. Crazy.

I've said that from the beginning and nothing has changed my opinion on that.

I don't think it's news though to anyone paying attention that the Taliban and ISI/Pakistan being in cahoots.

Interesting, if you see any other posts on this please ping me.

I don’t think we’ve heard the last of McChrystal.. or his aids who I’m sure are still operating with the same mindset that went into setting up the RS reporter. I wonder if military command has made a conscious decision to win this thing regardless of what the administration wants. Which would mean they are fighting strategic campaigns on multiple fronts. As Dire Straits once said, ‘These guys ain’t dumb.’
