CBO: Immigrants in the Labor Force
Congressional Budget Office ^ | July 23, 2010 | Douglas Elmendorf , Director CBO

Posted on 07/26/2010 5:44:40 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

People born in other countries are a growing presence in the U.S. labor force. In 2009, more than 1 in 7 people in the U.S. labor force were born elsewhere; 15 years earlier, only 1 in 10 was foreign born. About 40 percent of the foreign-born labor force in 2009 was from Mexico and Central America, and more than 25 percent was from Asia.

Today CBO released an update to its November 2005 report on the role of immigrants in the U.S. labor market.

Some highlights include:

* In 2009, 24 million members of the labor force were foreign born, up from 21 million in 2004.

* In 2009, over half of the foreign-born workers from Mexico and Central America did not have a high school diploma or GED credential, as compared with just 6 percent of native-born workers.

* Those born in Mexico and Central America constitute an increasingly large share of the least educated portions of the labor force.

* 70 percent of workers born in Mexico and Central America were employed in occupations that have minimal educational requirements, such as construction laborer and dishwasher.

* On average, the weekly earnings of men from Mexico and Central America who worked full time were just over half those of native-born men; women from Mexico and Central America earned about three-fifths of the average weekly earnings of native-born women.

I really don't care about the number of immigrants in the work force.

I do care about the number of ILLEGAL immigrants in the work force.

The illegals need to be deported (with their families) as fast as possible. Get them out.

If they want to go through the proper channels to enter the country legally, welcome.

My sweetie in Chicago warned me that he had to fulfill a social obligation that he could not ignore: a friend from grade school hosting a party for a kid. My sweetie is a recovering liberal and dreads such events because, being from Chicago, the conversation turns to politics and he is always outnumbered by libs. He’s no longer drinking the Kool-aid but the rest of them are. He wondered if I would be “available” in case he ran into a rough spot with them, as the libs ganged up on him, 4:1. I thought he was kidding when he said he wondered if it was okay to call me, then hand the phone to his flaming lib childhood friend, so I said “Sure, no problem.”

Imagine my shock when the phone rang here at about 6:00pm. It was my sweetie, ready to hand the phone off. His childhood friend was ready to tangle with me!

We covered all the usual topics: Reagan, global warming, the gulf spill, estate tax, Bush tax hikes, etc.

Then we moved into the “outsourcing” thing. I reminded him that I am not only opposed “outsourcing” but “INSOURCING.” He wondered what that is. I said “Insourcing is instead of farming out to low-wage countries, it is allowing low-wage employers to hire, under the radar, illegal immigrants.” He seemed stunned. I told him that “insourcing” is what companies, whose industries are not exportable, do in order to get cheap labor. They not only avoid paying the legal wage; they are incentivized because they don’t pay ANY of the liberal bells and whistles taxes such as unemployment, workers comp, or the rest. They can’t complain about mistreatment or discrimination (trust me, I hit ALL the lib buttons!). And I reminded him that we once fought a war over slave labor. I also said that if you favor illegal immigration, you are no saint, you’re in the pocket of greedy business. LOL

First time in my life, I was able to silence a lib.

:)

I hope so. My sweetie is so beleaguered. He knows he is on the right page, but being in Chicago, he feels pretty alone. I feel kinda sorry for him....while I might have straightened him out, he’s a bit of a pariah in his own circle. He said to me “I know we’re right. I know it in my bones. But it hurts to be standing alone with family and friends I’ve had since kindergarden.” :(

Even though as you drive around Chicago and see all the closed businesses and people unemployed, they are not making the connection!

I forgot to mention, when the phone was handed to me....that call lasted 90 minutes. That is how long I went back and forth with that libtard. LOL

I’m in the process of putting together MSM links to support our positions, and I’ll forward them to this lib nitwit via my sweetie. He’s such a putz, he was impressed when I mentioned to him that the Netroots thing was two hours from me.

good grief!

Thanks for the support, lady! Our battle never ends, does it?

First time in my life, I was able to silence a lib.

Outstanding Miss Daisy Jane!

The other night I was having a spirited discussion with a lifelong RAT, of course we covered a lot of ground as he kept "changing the subject" whenever I would knock one out of the park.

Of course we had a bemused live audience of mixed political-view members who couldn't or chose not to enter the discussion and were just enjoying the show.

Finally he got around somehow to extolling the great virtues of cities. I, knowing of the total corrupt RAT political nature of cities and their criminal use of voter fraud to steal elections, decided without mentioning that, to express my disdain for them in a different manner.

I started out by stating that essentially the great political divide in the US was between country people and "city people".

He began to rattle off the great historic, political, artistic/entertainment and sports venues readily available in cities.

I said, yeah I suppose, but if I want any of that stuff I can go watch it at a time and place of my choosing on a big screen TV. I added: As soon as I actually get into a city, the only thing I can think of is how to get the hell out of there.

(That was the windup for the big knockout punch)

Besides, I said, I tend to judge the company I keep by the murder rate per hundred thousand....

The silence was deafening...and lasted for at least 45 seconds. I learned a long time ago, that once you make your close in sales, you shut up, the first guy to talk loses.

Thing went into slow motion...I looked around at the other people, they were smiling, gasping, deadpan...no one jumped in to speak.

I looked at the liberal and he looked like a fresh caught fish gasping and moving his mouth, but he couldn't make any words come out.

So finally I handed him a cold beer and the conversation magically turned to something much safer (for him) and stayed that way for the rest of the evening.

Doncha love it when stuff like that happens!?

Per Pew 8 million illegal aliens have jobs. Illegal aliens enter the United States in two distinct ways: approximately 60 percent cross a border illegally; and the remaining 40 percent overstay a legal visa.

While Unemployment has been bouncing around 20%, if calculated as it was in Reagan's time, 125,000 new legal workers are imported each month.
