Republicans Fret as Sharron Angle Slips in Polls
Yahoo News ^ | 07/26/2010 | David M. Drucker, CQ-Roll Call

Republicans are growing increasingly frustrated with Sharron Angle and her lackluster campaign to unseat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), fearing she is jeopardizing what they had long viewed as a sure pickup and costing them a chance to reclaim the majority.

Senate Republicans quietly acknowledge that Angle's controversial views on some issues remain a political liability. But the former Nevada Assemblywoman's larger problems are a progression of unforced errors stemming from a lack of campaign experience and an amateurish staff incapable of offering her the necessary guidance. However, Angle has proved to be adept at fundraising, corralling $2.6 million in the second quarter.

Republicans are reluctant to openly criticize Angle, not wanting to cause their nominee more problems. The most recent polling shows Reid ahead in his bid for a fifth term for the first time this campaign cycle. But privately, they concede Angle could lose if she doesn't learn campaign discipline and overhaul her core team to include advisers with experience running a top-tier, statewide race.

Last week, the Republican National Committee dispatched an operative to Nevada to assist Angle, something the National Republican Senatorial Committee has been trying to do for weeks via telephone from Washington, D.C. NRSC Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) indicated that it has been a slow, sometimes difficult task, although he insisted he remains confident in Angle's ability to beat Reid.

"We've had conference calls, including me personally, with her and the campaign, and we continue to work with them. But it's a work in progress," Cornyn said Thursday. "While running for election is not rocket science, it does require knowledgeable people, it does require some discipline, and that's always a struggle for every first-time candidate."

"It's dysfunctional," a Nevada Republican added, when asked to give an assessment of the Angle campaign.

Somebody get in there and help her!

Whose job is it? RNC? Mitch McConnell?

Reid should be on his way out.

How does someone run a wildly successful primary campaign as an underdog and win a significant victory without great organization and campaign discipline? While she is not perfect, this is largely a manufactured story. She does need to step up and put these stories to bed before they become fact.

If the GOP considered beating Reid to be a priority, they would be offering her all the help she needs and not talking about it.

A dysfunctional GOP watches a rookie take on the Clown of Darkness and complains from a safe distance that she isn’t as professional as they would be.

Reid is running a huge number of TV commercials here in Las Vegas that do a good job of making her sound like she is deranged.

He’s ahead but he’s still in the low 40s. Angel is high 30s to low 40s right now. On their ballot are other minor candidates and a choice of none of the above. Reid doesn’t believe he can get to 50%, but he hopes he can beat her out with a small plurality.

Modern day reporters can find the truth anywhere. I wonder if this Nevada Republican's name was Shabazz.

Might they actually want Reid to keep the seat as an example of what happens when the voters pick the unapproved candidate?

Sarah will be coming to Nevada more than Reid would want her to show up, reminding the voters how the Moron in chief and Reid, pushed not to have conventions in Nevada, or parents spending their children’s college funds gambling there.

In one poll he is ahead by two points, with lots of negative ads and the help of the media.
