NEW YORK In a statement reaffirming his support for the mission of the American Civil Liberties Union, philanthropist David Gelbaum explained today why his generous financial contributions to the ACLU and two other charities will be greatly reduced this year. Gelbaum’s statement, which comes after years of anonymous financial support to the organization, follows a New York Times article first published online Tuesday night naming him as a major ACLU donor. Other nonprofits significantly affected by Gelbaum’s announcement are the environmental group the Sierra Club Foundation and the Iraq Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund, a charity that provides services for American military personnel and their families.
“David Gelbaum is one of America’s greatest heroes an unassuming man with a spectacularly generous spirit. Every American should be grateful for the selfless commitment to improving the lives of others demonstrated by this remarkable man,” said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero. “While we’re clearly disappointed that his desire to remain anonymous was breached, we remain eternally grateful for everything he and his family have done to advance the cause of civil liberties for all Americans.”
The following is the text of Mr. Gelbaum’s statement:
STATEMENT BY DAVID GELBAUM
FOR USE BY ORGANIZATIONS
FACING LARGEST REDUCTIONS IN HIS DONATIONS
December 9, 2009
I understand that you have reached a point in your relations with your supporters and the general public where it would be important to reveal my identity as your largest anonymous donor.
The situation is this. For a number of years, your organization has received very substantial charitable contributions from me. I am willing to be publicly named now because my investments in alternative, clean energy companies have placed me in a highly illiquid position as a result of the general credit crisis in the American and world financial systems.
Consequently, and much to my regret, I will not be able to make donations of this size starting in 2010 and continuing indefinitely. Several of the largest organizations I have funded in the last five years have had to make plans to wind down major areas of their work. These are programs I have been proud to support, including the Iraq Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund that serves the needs of service members and veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, the race and poverty work of the ACLU Foundation, and the Military Families Outdoors program of the Sierra Club Foundation. The future viability of these programs will depend on the generosity of others.
I have consented to disclosure so that my charitable recipients will not be constrained by donor confidentiality, may fully explain how these programs were created and financed, and may ask others to step forward to help sustain them in the future.
The three charities listed below will experience the greatest reductions, compared to what I have given in the past. These are the amounts that I provided to them in the period from 2005 to 2009, through a combination of donor-advised funds, direct giving, and other philanthropic vehicles.
1. Iraq Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund at the California Community Foundation
Contact: Amy Fackelmann Gonzalez http://www.calfund.org/learn/iadif.php $247 million
2. American Civil Liberties Union Foundation
Contact: Anthony Romero http://www.aclu.org/ $ 94 million
3. Sierra Club Foundation
Contact: Peter Martin http://www.sierraclub.org/foundation/ $ 48 million
I request that you make known my support of all three organizations so that everyone understands that the shift in my financial circumstances is the cause of the reduction in giving, and not any disapproval or dissatisfaction with the programs. To the contrary, I hope they will thrive with the generous support of many other donors, large and small.
See attached breakdown of programs.
This half hour has had more meat than three hours of any other show.

I’m sure they look FABULOUS in them, too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol afraid for the nation
Savage thinks Breitbart was set up.
Right about Newt wrong about Palin. Gov. Palin destroyed the McCain campaign? -- how can you destroy something shattered or dilapidated? When she came aboard his poll spiked and then fell after the contrived (IMO) financial crisis in Sept. 2008.
A cursory search shows China and other countries doing pretty well in Iraq it ain't just the American "sisters."
Iran's increased power vis-a-vis the Shi'a in Iraq? So how come there are reports posted right here on FR citing evidence of disasters in Iran? A signal that the end was near for the Shah was the the Bazaar joining the revolt. google for Iran's Grand Bazaar news stories over the past month or so. Of course, the Shah was not as evil as the current rulers of Iran.
I know for a fact that the identification of the "enemies within" and much of what Savage talks about did not originate with Savage. So how can the others steal his ideas? He's done a great job, no question, but he is not the first. It started decades ago.
Levin is always complaining that others steal his ideas also. Borring.
What if Saddam was still in business and had succeeded in hiding and developing his WMD programs? What if he was funding Al Qaeda, et al? I'll defer to the military but it seems a Saddam is worse for us than having no Saddam -- and Iran facing revolution.
Andrew would do well to sit back and digest Mike’s theory. “Pertinent” isn’t very explicit insofar as editing instructions are concerned.
Is that (I forgot which black congressman)’s bill?
It’s awful when the Doc finds that his inclinations don’t pan out with what Breitbart knows.
Apparently the man who supplied the video to Breitbart is trusted. And the video INCLUDED the part of Sherrod’s speech where she said she had reformed of her racist view. (And since that time, seems it was a short lived reform).
Two things we can learn from this that the Doc doesn’t want to admit —
1) that the Doc’s great insights are not infallible.
and
2) that there are a large number who are allegedly ant-Statist who are writing in the service of the Statists. The ease of too many on the Right to throw Breitbart under the bus demonstrates this.
Or Breitbart was banboozled but still doesn’t realize/accept it. That’s a distict possibility too.
Re: Pertinent isnt very explicit insofar as editing instructions are concerned.
The point is that the clip in question INCLUDED Sherrod’s exculpatory statements and she still got fired.
The harmful part of the video was the reaction of the NAACP audience.
There has been so much disinfo passed along by usually good talkers (see my comment last week here about Jerry Doyle’s complete nonsense about the time frame)
Re: “Or Breitbart was banboozled but still doesnt realize/accept it. Thats a distict possibility too.”
They may have tried, but the current effort is built on a mountain of lies and repeated over and over again. The clip is everything Breitbart ever said about it.
I wish the Doctor would let his guest get a word in edgewise. I am interested in what Mr. Breitbart has to say.
Yeah, Doc is still on his hobby horse about Gov. Palin.
20 point loss for mcCain without her.
I am off to dinner, so I will see ya on the flipside!
SAVAGE!
Really. Palin may indeed be not what we want, but she ADDED to McCain’s numbers, no doubt about it.
I saw the original within hours of when it first came out. It was there. I think she was fired because she embarrassed the usual suspects.
You know, this may be like that video about Savage being “vicious” towards Glenn Beck. People react before they see the whole clip.
Did you hear AB’s answer to the woman’s question? The NAACP had no reason to react angrily toward Sherrod for the reason they’re now stating. Their original news release included “the reaction of the audience was troubling.”
I have a pet peave. Interviewees who can’t say “yes”. Ever noticed that?
Yes. ;)
Seriously, there’s a conversational tic, or personality type that is adverse to simply anwering the question in the affirmative or negative, and saving the editorializing for the last. They like to use the interogative as a springboard for going off on some tangent.
I am trying to follow this segment but it’s really not very coherent. WTF is going on?
I think it’s because they know they can lose the opportunity to be heard at any time. So they give the explanation behind their answer up front.
Heck, the Doc often doesn’t let people talk, although he’s better than many others.
Hey lainie. Long time since the Drudge thread. The good times.
lainie, don’t trust us. A few hours after the show ends you’ll be able to get the free podcast here: http://www.mediafly.com/Podcasts/Feeds/The_Michael_Savage_Show_Podcast
If you skip past the first 40 minutes you’ll be a few minutes into the 2nd hour of the show. You’d be better informed listening yourself. I find I have left out some of the things I recalled from earlier stuff as I was typing.
Agreed.
Despite the irritation (for me) of hearing Savage and Levin constantly claiming "they stole it from me!" I gotta say..
Without Savage the guts to stand up against PC would have suffered severely. We'd be years behind.
But IMO it's an insult to the Americans of the '30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and early 90's to claim to be the one who first saw the "enemies within" or some such thing.
You think we Goldwater supporters didn't challenge the country-club, internationalist Rockefeller / Scranton Republicans?
What about the Great Sedition Trial of 1944? I was too young to remember it but it was patriots who among other things opposed Stalin, communism, and a lot of what FDR was doing. Fortunately the judge threw the case out but the defendants, most if not all poor, suffered greatly after being forced to face trial in Washington, D.C.
A small example, before Savage was on the air there was a 1994 state-wide California Save-Our-State initiative Prop 187. I believe that 30 percent of the people who voted that year voted solely to vote for Prop. 187. Savage did not sound the alarm vis-a-vis ILLEGAL immigration! We knew.
This is about America, not my talk show is bigger than yours. It can't be just competition and money.. all these guys are modern day patriots and are openly risking as much as the original patriots. I just don't get it. Egos?
Answer to the last caller about the White House injecting racism...
Well duh.
For someone who finds the inter-host ego wars distasteful, you sure bring it up a lot.
I just don’t get it. Egos?
Could it be that at least one of them is engaging in agit-prop?
Statism doesnt need to control all its leading opponents. It allows those to advance whom it knows to have a handle or two and when the moment is ripe twists.
He brings it up for the same reason that has led me to my conclusions about not trusting anyone in talk radio. I’m just one step ahead of him. Not that I’m right mind you, only that I’ve more reason to be distrustful.
oops, forgot to include you in my response to spacebar.
It’s been 4 or 5 years, I think. So sad. If Drudge was on the air in these times he’d be on fire.
Thank you ever so much!
Between the roids and getting hit in the head, Jesse Ventura should just sit down.
I've never known any adult with such an obsession with self -- I do remember grade school and high school classmates (a couple) who were obsessed with self however. They had the athletic talents and were constantly telling us.. no I wasn't envious. All the athletes found them just as boring as I did. But they were good and valuable to the team.
Maybe Avoiding_Sulla is right about "not trusting anyone in talk radio." I am not ready to admit it yet.. but I am willing to believe that the California Republican Party is run by Democrat moles and it's true people are susceptible to various forms of persuasion or "twists."
Picking a skin blemish is the surest way to make it bleed. I mentally filter out all the jabs, and try to concentrate on the substance of the show. Savage is a package as are all the others. Sometimes you need to sift out the chaff to get at the kernels of wheat.
Michele’s on at roughly 45 min into the third hour. Nice articulate woman.
