OMAHA, Neb. Faced with expensive legal challenges, officials in the eastern Nebraska town of Fremont are considering suspending a voter-approved ban on hiring or renting property to illegal immigrants until the lawsuits are resolved.
The City Council narrowly rejected the ban in 2008, prompting supports to gather enough signatures for the ballot measure. The ordinance, which was approved by voters last month, has divided the community, with supporters saying it was necessary to make up for what they see as lax federal law enforcement and opponents arguing that it could fuel discrimination...

the voters need to bring a suit that would be just as expensive to oppose.

Two things. Lawsuits filed by whom? And funded how?
Also, I am tired of people complaining about “discrimination.” We all discriminate. Whether we don’t like the look of someone on the street or avoid a poor driver, we discriminate. It is not a bad word. If illegals are from Mexico or SA, then you look check on the status.

If it comes to the point where you don’t have enough money to get justice, as is the case here, vigilante justice might become more commonplace.

We’re travleing right now, and currently in Melrose, MN - typically lily-white Germans in the past, population just over 3000.....but there’s a Jennie-O toikey plant here.
Yesterday, wifey and I needed a laundromat and it was jammed with off-duty plant employees - Hispanics with their anchor babies, and a handful of Somalians (wives wearing hijabs). The demographic here has changed forever. How the locals let Jennie-O destroy their lifestyle is beyond me, even if the plant is the largest local employer.

These lawsuits are routinely filed by the ACLU and other similar groups that are well funded by the left and possess large endowments. They basically beat down smaller opponents with their full time staff of lawyers filing briefs and motions causing the defendants to pay lawyers to respond to avoid default judgment.
It would be nice if the conservatives funded a similar organization, other than the NRA, to go after cash strapped cities now that their budgets are bust.

Don’t forget the American Chamber of Commerce, which has been fighting the enforcement of our immigration laws for years. They are a big player.

The city faces lawsuits from the American Civil Liberties Union and the Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund. City officials have estimated that Fremont's costs of implementing the ordinance including legal fees, employee overtime and improved computer software would average $1 million a year.

Right, good point, although your next post doesn’t show them involved in this case. I think they prefer more strategic cases.

Council refused to pass the ordinance, so citizens pass it as a referendum, so council is doing backflips to find a reason not to enforce it and Yahoo is covering the council's back by providing cover.
Council couldn't even say how much money they'd save by not enforcing the law, but "if they save one penny, it would be worth it."

The City Council originally voted against this law. Then the voters collected enough signatures to force a vote by the people. It passed easily. Now the Council wants to kill it again. I hope the voters remember at the next election. I doubt it, though.

Call Homeland Security... complain about it... say you saw drug use and you know these are illegals... they will act. They shut down a Holly Farms chicken processing plant and jailed the manager here in Mississippi... and there are NO illegals working for them any longer.

They get involved when it comes to cracking down on enforcement against employers. They have been involved in cases in AZ, Oklahoma, etc. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been in the forefront of arguing that legal immigration has to be increased because there are not enough workers available. Also, the Essential Worker Immigration Coalition (EWIC) was specifically founded to work for legal status for illegal immigrants and to increase legal immigration, including guestworker programs to allow in more unskilled workers. EWIC includes the National Restaurant Association, American Hotel & Lodging Association, American Nursery & Landscape Association, International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, International Franchise Association, National Association of Home Builders, National Retail Federation, and the Outdoor Amusement Business Association.1 All of these industries employ large numbers of seasonal workers to do jobs that require modest levels of formal education. These are specifically the type of jobs traditionally done by teenagers.
Both parties have been bought and paid for by corporate interests when it comes to immigration. Even with 25 million Americans looking for full time employment, we are still issuing 125,000 work authorizations a month to legal foreign workers who are coming here with either work or immigrant visas. It all boils down to the bottom line, which is driven by cheap labor.

Who would pay for it? The only ones that would make out, would be the lawyers.
