BO Won’t Speak In-Person at Boy Scouts’ 100th Ann. Celebration; Will Appear on ABC's ‘The View’
CNS News ^ | 7/27/2010 | Penny Star

Posted on 07/27/2010 7:14:54 AM PDT by IbJensen

(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama, the honorary chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, will not speak in-person before the group on Wednesday at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia, as part of the organization's 100th anniversary celebration. However, the president is sending a videotaped message to the scouts for Wednesday, the same day he will be in Manhattan to tape an appearance for ABC TV’s talk show “The View.”

Bob Dries, chairman of national news and media at the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree – a gathering that happens every four years and attracts thousands of scouts from around the world – told CNSNews.com that the organization was told on Monday that the president had scheduling conflicts and would not be speaking in-person at the week-long event.

The BSA had scheduled its Wednesday arena program to include remarks by the president at 11 a.m. in front of the more than 45,000 scouts who will be in attendance.

The White House did not confirm to CNSNews.com that the president would not speak live at the Jamboree on Wednesday, but reporters were sent an e-mail at 1:45 p.m. on Monday announcing that the president will be in New Jersey on Wednesday afternoon to talk about the economy before he travels on to New York City to film his appearance for “The View’s” Thursday edition.

Also, shortly after the White House e-mail was distributed, Bob Dries confirmed that Jamboree officials had been informed the president would not be speaking in-person but would address the scouts via pre-taped remarks.

Since the Jamboree was launched in 1937, sitting presidents have been invited to speak at the event in their role as the honorary chairman of the BSA. That year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke at the inaugural Jamboree, held on the Mall in Washington, D.C.

Obama's three predecessors spoke at the event – George H. W. Bush in 1989 and Clinton in 1998 in-person, and George W. Bush who spoke via video in 2001 when bad weather prevented him from traveling. George W. Bush did speak in-person at the 2005 Jamboree.

First Lady Nancy Reagan addressed the Jamboree in 1985, the first year someone from the White House had spoken there since President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Prior to Johnson, President Harry Truman was joined by then-General and future President Dwight D. Eisenhower, both of whom spoke at the 1950 Jamboree in Valley Forge.

Presidents Nixon, Reagan, Carter and Ford did not speak at a Jamboree and President John F. Kennedy was assassinated before the Jamboree in 1964 when Johnson spoke.

The BSA issued a statement late on Monday about President Obama not being able to speak at the event.

“Due to his schedule, President Obama will not be able to attend the 2010 National Scout Jamboree,” the statement reads. “In February, the President sent a letter honoring the BSA’s 100th Anniversary and his signature appears on Eagle Scout cards."

Then-President George W. Bush shakes hands with scouts at the 2005 Boy Scouts of America Jamboree. “Also, he has welcomed Boy Scouts contingents in the Oval Office twice since taking office,” the statement reads. “President Obama serves as the Honorary President of the BSA, as has every President since Howard Taft. While each President is traditionally invited to attend the Jamboree, not every President has been able to attend the event.”

“We thank the President for his effort to recognize Scouting and look forward to working with his administration as we work toward accomplishing our mission of preparing young people to become exceptional adults,” the statement concludes.

The two occasions referred to in the statement were when scouting representatives visited the Oval Office in 2009 and earlier this month for the BSA to present the president with the organization’s annual Report to the Nation, which outlines accomplishments for the year and the BSA’s vision for the future.

In a statement about his appearance on the "The View," ABC said it would be "the first time in history a sitting United States president has visited a daytime talk show."

In an e-mail, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer told The New York Times that Obama's appearance on "The View" had been "contemplated for several weeks because the president was scheduled to be in New York City for a fund-raiser," and that the appearance "was nailed down early last week."

"If it works schedule-wise, we try to have the president appear on some non-traditional news shows when we go to New York City, since that's where most of the shows Like this story.

The scouts are too much like the military for Obuma's taste and he hates the Military. He could never be a scout himself because scouts are loyal, trust worthy, honest, dependable and they love their country. Obuma has none of the characteristics that the average scout has. He isn't fit to shine a scout's boots with his tongue. He belongs on the View where people like him can be admired for being worthless.

He would much prefer the fawning he'll receive on the "View" by 4 half-crazed liberal/progressive ideologues. This man, our President is a worldwide laughing stock.

Obama is nothing more than a Marxist narcissistic pevert and is against everything that Scouting stands for. Obama is the worst example of a leader in all respects and is a complete disgrace to our ocuntry. I say this as a former Scout and Scout leader.

The view is tabloid fodder. It is a show for fools. I wouldn't be caught dead watching it. For low level intelligence, it's the show to watch - even Elizabeth isn't very impressive. Sure she squeals now and then but as foolish as the others. It's a low class verbal food fight.

White House vs. Boy Scouts, Part 1
Posted: June 21, 2010

(Editor’s note: This is Part 1 of a three-part series on the White House and the Boy Scouts. In Parts 2 and 3, Norris will not only give further proof concerning how the Obama administration is creating an arm’s-length relationship with the BSA, but show how President Obama’s advocacy of the BSA compares to the past 100 years of U.S. presidents.)

He would do a lot better job at "repairing his image" by speaking to the Boy Scouts than the witches convention on the View.

Of course, baby barry will go where he gets fawned over the most.

Besides, the Boy Scouts believe in God and Country...obama does NOT.

He will have no part of it because this is one president that doesn’t have a clue what this country is all about or what it is made of. He also doesn’t care and doesn’t want to learn anything about our history.

Well, I guess we gotta give him the "clean" part, according to Biden.

One of my grandsons is in the last stages of earning his Eagle Scout badge.

No, Obama wouldn’t want to honor the Boy Scouts and offend the gay community, who are already angry at him for not doing more to promote their agenda. Never mind that he can’t do more, because the American people won’t put up with it.

Son #2 saw Clinton speak in 1998. Son #3 saw the video of Bush in 2001 (GWB was going to speak live, but bad weather forced the ceremony back a day, ergo Bush had to send a video)

Son #4 is at Jambo now. While we both decided last Thursday that BO wasn’t going to be there for one reason or another, I told my son that even though BO doesn’t deserve it, he should show him respect as we are above the disrespectful behavior that the left so often indulges in (ie. booing the boy scouts at the democrat convention). Being respectful often means being tolerant.

BO knows that boy scouts are trained well.

When seeing this piece of human excrement, the scouts would carefully dig a deep trench, place the excrement within, and cover it up so the flies couldn’t get to it.

This would make it very hard for the Obamaloon to read his promptor.

He also wants to make an appeal to what he believes is mainstream America. He sees these “ladies” as being supportive and they are. They'll be gushing over him and he'll let them think that he's really an okay guy. Hasselbaum or whatever her name is will be totally SUBMISSIVE. Even she knows better than to stir the pot. This Hasselblum person is just another progressive trying to seize power too.

Will OBama have an interview with other tabloids like The Star or the Inquirer? That's about his speed - NONTHINKING, SHALLOW people that swing and sway and easily influenced.

As for the B.S.A. they should NOT want Obama near their organization. Obama supports QUEERS. Obama is opposed to everything the B.S.A. stands for - DECENCY. Remember Obama HATES WHITE people and he sees the B.S.A. as a WHITE BOYS group. He didn't have this growing up in third world, Indonesia.

and George W. Bush who spoke via video in 2001 when bad weather prevented him from traveling

True, but not the complete story. George W. Bush was scheduled to attend the Closing Ceremony. Instead, we had a horrific lightning storm and the Closing Ceremony was postponed by one day. The President - and other major national entertainers - had the Closing Ceremony on their calendar for perhaps years, but were unable to reschedule and appear the following day. President Bush appeared by video.

The storm deprived us of the President's visit but brought out the best in Scouting. A Scout was hit by lightning the evening originally scheduled for the Closing Ceremony. He survived thanks to CPR performed by his Scoutmaster until the paramedics arrived.

Because the national 'big-name' entertainers couldn't reschedule, the BSA asked for volunteers from among the Scouts and leaders present.

We had a pair of Scouting brothers who were outstanding jugglers. We had a group of Scouts from New Jersey who sang a cappella do-wop music, having met each other on a bus traveling to Jamboree where they discovered a mutual interest in do-wop. An 80+ year-old Scoutmaster from Oregon played the musical saw - and his rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" received a raucous standing ovation from the 40,000+ Scouts, leaders, and visitors. A bunch of Scouts who were percussionists staged a version of stomp, playing trashcans, number 10 cans, slop buckets, and anything else they could play.

It was the best entertainment we could have had.

And we missed President George W. Bush because it was unsafe for 40,000+ Scouts to sit in a field during a severe thunderstorm, not because the President elected to appear on The View.

Congratulations to your Grandson. It’s a regret that I have in life that I didn’t get involved past the Cub Scout stage. The life skills that the Scouts receive are priceless and I later learned that once you are an Eagle Scout you are part of a rather powerful and respected group. I did’t realize that Eagle Scout is held in almost as much esteem as attending one of our military academies and fellow Eagle Scouts network and give preferences to each other like a big fraternity.

“Obama is the worst example of a leader in all respects and is a complete disgrace to our country. I say this as a former Scout and Scout leader.”

Personally, I’m somewhat relieved that Skippy won’t be in attendance. The 100th Anniversary is a big deal, and I would hate to see it compromised by Skippy’s lukewarm participation.

Funny how people associate the BSA with “white boys.” I lived in a very white suburb in the mid-60s, but our troop still had Eddie Harris, a black Star scout who was the son of a local doctor. Funny how race becomes a total non-factor when you hike, camp, hunt, and fish with someone of a different ethnic background. Scouting was a great equalizer for all of the kids, and we learned much from each other.

Skippy doesn’t belong at the Jamboree, even if he is the sitting POTUS. The Scouts would be respectful, sure, but his presence would go over like the proverbial turd in the punchbowl.

Let’s see what the Scouts define as clean (excerpted from boyscouttrail.com)

From the Scout Handbook - “A Scout is clean. A Scout keeps his body and mind fit. He chooses the company of those who live by high standards. He helps keep his home and community clean.”

If it’s not dirt, earth, and grime that makes a Scout dirty, what does? It’s a simple chore to scrub dirt off skin, but a much more difficult task to clean up filthy thoughts, habits, and behaviors that accumulate in our lives. First a feeling of jealousy or mistrust towards someone, then a derogatory comment about them, and soon a person is a fountain of malice spewing forth filth, vulgarity, and hate. Cleaning up such a mess is nearly impossible, but fortunately takes a long time to develop. By keeping the mind and heart clean and not allowing the emotional grime to settle in, the problem is kept at bay.

The term filthy liar is spot on correct. Lying, cheating, and stealing are all habits formed from an unclean soul. Resolving to speak the truth and resist temptation to lie is the basis of being Trustworthy. It is manifest as clean, honest words and actions. A clean scout tempers his tongue and only speaks the truth in a kind manner. This is based on a sense of caring for others. Self-centered people have no care for others or how actions may effect them. An unselfish scout caring for the needs of others out of compassion is an industrial-strength vacuum on the dirt of his soul.

Dirty jokes, vulgar comments, racial slurs, ridicule, and swearing are often heard in many situations. They have no place in scouting and no place in a scout’s life. Besides choosing to not say those kinds of things, a scout should also make it known that he will not tolerate those things. A single scout will most likely not change the behaviors of a group, but he can make his feelings known and then remove himself from the crowd. He can also support someone he finds as the butt of these comments and demonstrate compassion to those unclean louts, possibly helping them recognize their ways.

A Scout is Clean.

0bama ain’t clean.

When our son became an Eagle Scout, his letter was signed by the President. Kinda bittersweet, since Clinton was President, at the time.

I can't think of any reason Obama's signature doesn't appear on the letters, other than he just doesn't want to bother.

It's quite likely the President doesn't physically sign them anyway; could be a stamp, and if that's the case, then it's just a willful refusal on Obama's part.
