Poll: California Catholics strongly support homosexual unions
Catholic culture.org ^ | July 27 2010 | Catholic Culture

Posted on 07/27/2010 2:43:55 PM PDT by NoLibZone

A survey of over 3,000 Californians conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute in June has found that Catholics strongly support the legal recognition of homosexual unions.

Only 22% of white Catholics and 23% of Latino Catholics oppose the legal recognition of homosexual unions. 37% of white Catholics and 44% of Latino Catholics support same-sex marriage, while an additional 41% of white Catholics and 28% of Latino Catholics support homosexual civil unions. In contrast, 53% of Latino Protestants oppose the legal recognition of homosexual unions.

The survey did not distinguish Catholics by frequency of Church attendance.

“Protestants are much more likely to hear about homosexuality from their clergy than Catholics,” the survey report added. “Only 29% of white Catholics and 42% of Latino Catholics report hearing about homosexuality from their clergy.”

“All Catholics are obliged to oppose the legal recognition of homosexual unions,” the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith taught in 2003. “The Church teaches that respect for homosexual persons cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behavior or to legal recognition of homosexual unions. The common good requires that laws recognize, promote and protect marriage as the basis of the family, the primary unit of society. Legal recognition of homosexual unions or placing them on the same level as marriage would mean not only the approval of deviant behavior, with the consequence of making it a model in present-day society, but would also obscure basic values which belong to the common inheritance of humanity.”

“A survey of over 3,000 Californians conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute in June has found that Catholics strongly support the legal recognition of homosexual unions.”

Not knowing anything about the respondent selection process (who were the 3,000 and how were they selected), the demographic composition (gender, race, religion, ethnicity, income), and factors of behavioral attributes such as “church attendance”, and manner others, that had to be present in the dataset of the survey - whether asked or not - there is no way of knowing how scientific it is, or not, to apply any of the survey results to the broader California population. Because there is no way of knowing how representative the survey’s 3,000 respondents are to that population.

So, what is the agenda of those who did the survey? That might tell you how much science might or might not be in the selection of the 3,000.

Are CA Catholics part of the church headquartered in the Vatican?

That was always the problem growing up Catholic. The bible was always on the back burner. You only heard what the church wanted you to hear if it fit their needs.

Interesting poll. As a Californian and a practicing Catholic, I say this poll is garbage. Prop 8, which was a constitutional amendment that forbade the state to recognize homosexual and lesbian marriages passed nearly 2 years ago. This state is over 25% Catholic. That prop never would have passed without majority Catholic support.

I have lots of friends at our parish. I do not know of one who wants homosexual and lesbian marriages recognized.

Lazy assumption notwithstanding, it was a correct conclusion. If that really makes you sick, consider moving.

"I don’t believe this poll....not one bit...."

If you do a little googling on the outfit which did this poll it's an eye opener. The founder is affiliated with the extreme liberal, "People for the American Way", and many other left wing outfits. This is a classic "push-poll". Have any of the Catholics out there ever heard of this "Catholic- culture.org who published the story? Is it affiliated with the church in any way or is it just another bunch of liberals calling themselves Catholic?

Much like American libtard Jews proclaiming they are Jews, they are only so by blood and genes; the same holds true for California Catholics who profess and/or call themselves Catholics, they are only Catholics by name only......=.=

The last time they voted. 52 percent said no to homo marriage. That's what counts. this is just a push poll to marginally sway opinion.

Not too surprising, this is a common liberal tactic of gradually waring down your moral “shock”. Homo marriage is a good example of this, the first time is was soundly defeated with most people “shocked” that it would even be proposed, the second time it was barely defeated with most people mildly disturbed and the third time it will pass with most peoples approval. Seen it happen on all sorts of “moral” issues and with most churches giving out a relativistic gospel things eventually shift, it just takes a few years and a constant barrage of propaganda. Also, most Catholics that I know pretty much totally disagree with most of the Catholic doctrine and are going just because of tradition.

Excellent point!

To attack the church, the liberal media likes to include phony pretend Catholics in their surveys. That is, lapsed “Madonna-style” Catholics — Democratic, libertine, divorce happy, pro-abortion, dope-smoking feminists.

"As we all know, these surveys never question how often the Catholic attends Mass."

If you assume that true Catholics attend Mass regularly, then the poll tells you indirectly how many self-identified Catholics do so.

These are not Catholics. They are not CINO’s either.
As you are not pregnant partly, or in name only. They may be former Catholics, or unaffiliated Catholics, or even attending a Mass on Christmas, but they are not Catholic. The libs don’t get that. Catholicculture.org doesn’t get this, or they would say so, so it is doubtful they are Catholic either to let this false image stand without Truth.

Mahoney has been replaced by adjutor, Arbishop Gomez. Mahoney will be retiring. Gomez is a strong and straight, but quiet, administrator. Look for things to change.

Lazy assumption notwithstanding, it was a correct conclusion. If that really makes you sick, consider moving.

Based on what Congress is doing I must conclude that America is a nation of crazy left wing Marxists. Whenever I read about some shocking liberal news item I will jump to the conclusion that requires the least amount of thought. The left wing policies are because it's the USA, the land of fruits and nuts, you know, that nation that put Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barack Obama in charge. You can guarantee that anything that comes out of the U.S. is going to be liberal craziness - look at the people they voted into office, for pete's sake! That's just the way Americans are.

Of course, if you don't like my lazy simplistic conclusions you should consider moving.

I envy your optimism but the plain fact is that even the so-called “conservative” bishops support the totally corrupt USCCB and its socialist agenda. I’ll see light at the end of the tunnel when bishops like Chaput publicly denounce USCCB.
