Global differences in intelligence is a sensitive topic, long fraught with controversy and still tinged by the disgraceful taint of pseudosciences such as craniometry that strove to prove the white race as the most clever of them all. But recent data, perplexingly, has indeed shown cognitive ability to be higher in some countries than in others. Whats more, IQ scores have risen as nations developa phenomenon known as the Flynn effect. Many causes have been proposed for both the intelligence gap and the Flynn effect, including education, income, and even nonagricultural labor. Now, a new study from researchers at the University of New Mexico offers another intriguing theory: intelligence may be linked to infectious-disease rates.
The brain, say author Christopher Eppig and his colleagues, is the most costly organ in the human body. Brainpower gobbles up close to 90 percent of a newborns energy. It stands to reason, then, that if something interferes with energy intake while the brain is growing, the impact could be serious and longlasting. And for vast swaths of the globe, the biggest threat to a childs bodyand hence brainis parasitic infection. These illnesses threaten brain development in several ways. They can directly attack live tissue, which the body must then strain to replace. They can invade the digestive tract and block nutritional uptake. They can hijack the bodys cells for their own reproduction. And then theres the energy diverted to the immune system to fight the infection. Out of all the parasites, the diarrheal ones may be the gravest threatthey can prevent the body from getting any nutrients at all.

“Understanding Human History”
which answers the question in 384 pages.
The IQ system isn’t very accurate, when it doesn’t take into account how some people, with a very high IQ, are, also, very stupid and/or ignorant, when it comes to political ideology!

This review is from: Understanding Human History (Perfect Paperback)
Here is a remarkable achievement. History books which answer the questions as to “when” and “where” are a dime a dozen. Some wars and some inventions, I guess you know them well. What Michael Hart has done in this masterpiece of a grand history lesson is to explain to his readers the great “whys” of history and pre-history.
Why did men start speaking with each other at a certain time and place? And why is it that agriculture first appeared where and when it did? Similarly, why did men develop the ability to write in the period and area they did? Dr. Hart’s transgressive answers to these questions will not please the faint of heart and the politically correct. Not only are the plants, animals and climate of each population’s habitat examined, but their cognitive abilities are taken into full account as well.
Understanding Human History is for readers who must know the truth, no matter where it will lead them. If a superior IQ was as powerful a prerequisite for the development of the Industrial Revolution as any other factor, then so be it. Few men would be up to the monumental task of making the case presented in these pages because it requires such a vast knowledge of history and science as well as the courage to break the most oppressive taboo of our time. In a sane world, this would be a required text for college students of world history.
Because some countries are below normal?

Self-identified liberals and Democrats do badly on questions of basic economics.
and we would believe these “scores” why?
What if some populations are more susceptible to infection than others? There is certainly evidence that points in this direction. In this event, the presence of infection might be primarily a marker for some other characteristic that is really the most significant factor.
That said, I dont want to dismiss the findings either. I do think there could be some impact of infection on cognitive development, just not as much as the authors seems to have convinced themselves.
The relevance of this for public policy is that our legal immigration system prioritizing family ties (and the illegal one importing the dregs of Mexico and Central America) is reducing the average national IQ.
That's a pretty stark assessment but Canada and Australia agree with you. Their immigration policies are skills based and also English literacy based. While we kow tow to minority groups and go by family reunification mostly, not by skills. Our legal immigration policy allows in poor people who are connected (have family here) ahead of skilled and educated people. Thus Mexico sends us the most legal immigrants about 400,000 per year
Canada has done an assessment of how previous immigrants and their offspring have done in Canada. They have applied the results to the current immigration policies in this way. More Chinese and Indian immigrants now and fewer Caribbean immigrants. Those racist basturds of the frozen north!!!!!!!1111!!
Potential causes for better IQ with development:
1. better food distribution, especially for the poor - growing brains require lots of calories, and if you’re starving, the brain doesn’t grow
2. better nutrition - if the kids get adequate vitamins, many nutritional deficiencies that reduce IQ go away
3. more vaccinations, more antibiotics - preventing diseases that destroy the brain helps boost IQ. Many fevers could cause blindness, deafness and paralysis. Many “unaffected” survivors likely lost some IQ points.
4. increased development tends to lead to better education - and more educated mothers teach more to very young children before they even hit school, helping wire the brain for better performance later.
The study controlled for other potential causes of the IQ gap... it turns out that infectious disease remains the most powerful predictor of average national IQ. The studys findings may also help explain the Flynn effect, which cant be accounted for by evolution (the IQ gains occur over time spans too short for natural selection). So whats going on instead? As nations develop, they improve their populations access to safe drinking water and to vaccines and medicineall of which lower parasitic infection rates.
What was the rest of the world doing when western civilization had its quantum leap of the industrial revolution?
Hey! Obama, tell us of the advances of Islam in ideas, inventions, innovation...other than advances in their warring state of mind...

Doesn't the 'rat culture in the US facilitate parasite development?
