Japanese Tanker Damaged Off Oman, Cause Unclear

MUSCAT/TOKYO (Reuters) – A Japanese oil tanker damaged in an explosion in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important shipping lanes, was being diverted to a port in the UAE on Wednesday.

One of the 31 crew aboard was injured but no oil leaked from the M Star very large crude carrier (VLCC), according to the Japanese transport ministry.

It said an explosion occurred onboard at around 00:30 a.m. local time (2030 GMT Tuesday), but the cause was unclear.

"A crew member saw light on the horizon just before the explosion, so (ship owner Mitsui O.S.K.) believes there is a possibility it was caused by an outside attack," Japan's ministry said in a statement.

Iranian version of Cheonan?

Oman's coastguard said there was no evidence of any attack on the tanker and instead cited an earthquake.

"The boat was hit by a tremor ...we have no information of an attack," an Omani coastguard official told Reuters.

Really....? A tremor at sea and no tsuanmi reported....? How absurd.

Yeah, because underwater earthquakes cause huge oil tankers to explode ALL THE DAMN TIME.

Either this thing got hit by a missile attack from a small boat or it ran over a mine leftover from back when the Iranians were mining the Gulf. Or, possibly, there was some sort of accident onboard. But an earthquake? Oh please.

Every other day now there seems to be a new oil leak somewhere, yesterday there were 2 new ones, I find all this to be very suspicious.

I’m thinking sabotage by lefties or terrorists.

I’m thinking sabotage by lefties or terrorists.

This would not be in the Iranians interests to do this. It would give the excuse needed to attack them. I have no idea who did this but I would suspect it is an "agent provocateur."

Who benefits by this?

PS
I am not an apologist for the evil Iranian regime.

Despite reports from UAE sources that the damage was caused by an excessively large wave caused by recent seismic activity in the region, MOL are adamant that the ship suffered an assault. A crew member claims he saw a flash on the horizon followed immediately by an explosion.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the scum were up to picking a fight with the Japanese now that they have fancied to have conquered Europe. Stupidly, the scum mistake civility and courtesy for cowardice. If they could read, they would know that the Japanese were the most sadistic fighting force in the world.

I don't know, it seems that it's the oil supply that's being sabotaged. I don't remember this many large oil spills ever.

Neither really do I. It could be the Eco-freaks doing this, as much as Al Qaeda, but if it were Islamic terrorism, it would be something more spectacular. Plus, the terrorists don’t tend to mess with the Asian countries since they know that they will lash out back far worse.

I think that if they are caught, and are American, this will result in a diplomatic backlash against the US and her interests. With this economy, no one can afford to ‘go green,’ and if they are, I think it might end up with mass arrests, if only to prevent the Eco-freaks from getting lynched.

This is the only problem with America, is that it has allowed the entertainment industry and enviro-freaks to run its domestic and many foreign policies. Climate-gate and the subsequent humiliation of the US/West never would have happened if our politicians had told the entertainment elite to stay out of politics and use one square of toilet paper if it pleased them, but to STOP interfering in the lives of Americans and the government.

America came out looking like idiots while China and India didn’t.

There is a larger picture here but I won't post it because it is AP:

picture of the damage

It's an inward incident, came from external.

It couldn't have been too powerful since it looks like it didn't open the skin (at least visibly).

Maybe they hit one of the little barrier poles that protect gas pumps while they were fueling up for the trip.

My wife’s done it before in my truck.

It's definitely above the water line, which I think rules out the freak wave theory that AP keeps parroting.

That picture looks like there was an explosion in the water, on or near the surface, just away from the ship.

Speculation... could be a mine (perhaps an old or malfunctioning one that didn’t explode with full force) or a small boat laden with explosives.
