Scientists say soot a key factor in warming
SF Chron ^ | 7/28/10

Posted on 07/28/2010 10:31:13 AM PDT by Bulwinkle

The evidence of mounting pollution by carbon particles in soot has been inadequately counted in international government debates over policies to cope with the warming problem, according to Stanford's Mark Z. Jacobson, leader of the university's Atmosphere and Energy program and a professor of civil and environmental engineering.....

And because soot absorbs sunlight as it falls on ice and snow and radiates back to Earth from clouds and layers of the atmosphere, it is the major reason for rapidly melting sea ice in the Arctic region, he said.

If you are not familiar with soot as an issue, here's an older piece:

...even at concentrations below five parts per billion—such dark carbon triggers melting, and may be responsible for as much as 94 percent of Arctic warming.

"Impurities cause the snow to darken and absorb more sunlight," says Charlie Zender, a climate physicist at the University of California, Irvine. "A surprisingly large temperature response is caused by a surprisingly small amount of impurities in snow in polar regions." ....,snip.... http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=impure-as-the-driven-snow

Thank heaven all that soot is causing growth of Antarctic ice at the same time.

BULL$HIT! Scientist = Quack. You can’t believe anything these so-called scientists say. Next year the same guy will be saying soot is causing global cooling.

And if you want to know where the soot comes from, most of these dots on this chart, derived from sat data, is from charcoal fires or land clearing in turd world countries. Note the amazon jungle is on fire as the turd worldlers burn it to the ground.

And here you thought it was your SUVs. Silly you.

Stick to what you know Professor and stay out of fields, like climatology, that you apparently know nothing about.

Remember this from 1975?

The Cooling World
Newsweek, April 28, 1975

[excerpt]

Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects. They concede that some of the more spectacular solutions proposed, such as melting the Arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting arctic rivers, might create problems far greater than those they solve. But the scientists see few signs that government leaders anywhere are even prepared to take the simple measures of stockpiling food or of introducing the variables of climatic uncertainty into economic projections of future food supplies. The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality.

The key culprit in any cvooling or warming is the sun. Good luck having any control over it.

I think if there has been any warming - it is probably due to the clean air act. Air pollution has decreased in some areas. Cloudy skiees, cooler weather - clear skies warmer.

Less air pollution - warmer weather.

Scientists are jumping the global warming ship right and left. Evidently the SF Chron has its head so far up its arse it doesn’t realize the lack of credibility of glbal warming these days.

Let me see: Global Warming.
The sun has a better correlation than CO2.
La Nina has a better correlation than CO2.
El Nino has a better correlation than CO2.
The orbit path of the Moon has a better correlation than CO2.
PDO has a better correlation than CO2.
And now soot has a better correlation than CO2.

I remember when I was a kid, Canada didn’t bother messing around fighting tundra fires unless they approached towns or habitats. I don’t know what their policies are today.
