Gaea Rich and her family were in full holiday mode aboard their yacht on the Fourth of July as they motored from Stamford, Conn., across Long Island Sound and into Oyster Bay, off the North Shore of Long Island.
The trip, with more than 15 relatives and friends, was supposed to be the high point of a weekend family reunion. But a few hours into the cruise, after what began as an apparently routine stop by a marine patrol of local and federal law enforcement officials, two passengers — a Guatemalan caterer hired for the day and Ms. Rich’s boyfriend, David Quinn, an Irishman who had worked for years as a horse-carriage driver in Central Park — were taken away on a police boat by federal immigration officials. Both men were illegal immigrants; they now face deportation.
The yacht had been caught in a web of laws, little known outside the maritime community, that are meant to keep a tight leash on vessels that are registered in foreign countries or have traveled in international waters. And the boarding and interrogations on a pleasure craft came as quite a surprise to passengers.
“We couldn’t believe it,” recalled Ms. Rich, 28, a fashion designer for Ralph Lauren. “Everyone was just shocked.”
The boat is registered in the Caribbean nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and owned by Ms. Rich’s uncle. He keeps the boat moored mostly in American waters: Stamford in the summer and Florida in the winter.
Many American yacht owners register their boats in foreign countries, often for tax purposes. That was her uncle’s reason, said Ms. Rich, adding that her uncle did not want to be interviewed or identified.

I’ve never been much into class warfare, but “the rich” are behaving quite badly. I hope this immigration issue comes around and bites them in the butt.....BIG TIME.
These stories must be intended to drive my blood-pressure up. The general point of these “illegals are accidently caught” stories is that they should have been ignored like all of the other illegals but because the (fill in the blank - in this case it’s being on an internationally registered yacht, other times it’s attempting to fly on a plane, return to their home country for a funeral, or applying for taxpayer support, etc), they get “mistakenly” caught up in a system intended to catch other, “bad” illegals.
I'm sure it's way more fun than dealing with real criminals on the Arizona border.

All these Irish and French servants for the Hamptons crowd ARE real criminals, as are the glitterati and eurotrash who hire them.
When I lived in Boston, it was a scandal that the INS bothered the Haitians but left the Irish alone.
I have no trouble with ICE cracking down in the Hamptons, in fact, I kinda like it.

Drug gangs have taken over the illegal crossings in Arizona and are shooting at American law officers miles from my in-laws home.
The Government tells the court in Arizona resources are scarce and the Feds have to make the call where to deploy them.
You can be pleased they choose to deploy their resources busting up chardonnay and brie parties on Hamptons yachts, but I'm outraged by it. I want them to target the Mexican border and target the violent crooks who seem to be able to cross with impunity. I want them to target the crooks already in custody in American jails. Those are the people who threaten the peace and security of my family.

It seems to be a Northern blue state thing. Not just the northeast, but the Upper Midwest as well (I’m in the Twin Cities area). “We’re the Beautiful People, and do whatever we want. Get out of the way commoner.” Such people also tend to vote Democrat (like I’m surprised). Limousine liberals, kick the ladder away so no one else can get near them (a rather candid admission by George Soros BTW). I have had run ins with one such person here who is a VP at a Fortune 500 company - several instances of road rage/vehicular assault.

Yes, the uber privileged. They do tend to vote democrats, the rules don’t apply to them. They have always banked on our dislike of class warfare to keep themselves safe. But the simple fact is, lawbreakers are lawbreakers rich or poor.
