Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek) designed the ‘Phaser’ like that.

As seen above, the basic Phaser (small handheld unit) could be slipped into this pistol grip amplifier or even a rifle stock amplifier for maximum handheld firepower.
A little hand held Phaser was slipped into a socket in the Enterprise that sourced the phasing that was blasted at whole planets.

Trivia: Gene invented the “Transporter” as a way of getting to the surface of planets because the network would not give him the funds for special effects to ‘land’ the Enterprise on the planet.
