Former Sitcom Writer Declares: Duggars Are Right
Life at the Pond ^

Posted on 07/29/2010 11:18:35 AM PDT by Comedylover

When I was researching the Duggars – wanting to make sure I wrote their personalities correctly, I read some of the junk out there. In the midst of all the bizarre misinformation on the Duggar family, I remember a few referencing the idea that these kids are missing out.

That couldn't be further from the truth.

My wife and I spent considerable time talking with the older Duggar kids. I'll never forget this moment: Sitting there talking to the three teenage girls in the house, Jill, Jessa and Jinger. And it hit me: These girls are experiencing freedom almost no teenage girl will ever see.

Freedom from the angst and peer pressure teenage girls face daily. Freedom from petty games, the cruelty, and constant barrage of contradictory messages. Freedom from the lure of sins that carry a lifetime of consequences.

Free to be themselves.

Cool take on the kids from TLC's 19 Kids and Counting. Oh, and the Duggars are on the Pond program! If anybody hears it, I'd love to see what you think.

The Duggars don’t live a lifestyle that I could handle, but they seem to be a terrific, well-adjusted bunch of people (the Mom blows me away with her organizational ability) and all the negative press they’ve gotten is appalling.

I’m sure there’ll be one or two black sheep out of their family — how could there not be with 19 kids — but on the whole I bet their kids will do better than most. And the girls won’t be infected with the total skankdom that’s infecting the 15 to 27 generation right now.

If you work with young people in a non-school setting, it can be pretty eay to spot the home schooled - they act more like adults (should) then some of the adults.

Good for them.

The Pond is a children’s radio and video series. It’s a big hit in my house. See www.lifeatthepond.com

Agreed - It’s actually easy when you’re in a college setting as well. I teach at a university, and I can spot the Catholic school and home-schooled kids from a mile away because they are academically and personally so much more mature than the public school kids.

Thank you. All I could find in a search had to do with ponds, including adopting them.

I used to work with the Jr. High kids at my church. I've had a number of homeschooled boys in my groups over the years, and you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.

Homeschooled kids STAND OUT. If we call secular school kids "normal", then the homeschooled kids are WELL beyond the "normal".

I can think of 1 boy I had, when he was in 6th grade, he could hold a conversation with an adult at the adults level. He's now the director of a christian camp in Montana.

I find homeschool kids to generally be leaders with those around them. I attribute it to the fact that they are more confident in who they are. Instead of trying to impress others, they are themselves. They have a greater knowledge of right and wrong, and that guides them, vs looking to others for affirmation. That kind of self esteem is a magnet for others who wallow around looking for others approval and guidance.

HA! They’re under the radar. Not sure why. It’s for kids but they have a lot of humor for adults in there.

perhaps this is why the ruling class is attempting to stamp out, strangle, and outlaw homeschooling?

You mean Mr? Openning of their show they mention he owns some rental properties. They’re also debt free - and were when they built their house.

Oh, and he was a GOP representative in Arkansas.

What exactally does My Dugger do for a living?

He was a real estate agent for many years who gradually made the transition to owning and managing properties for himself.

He also owns 3 towers that he leases to cell phone and radio companies. Last year he put the third tower up and he said he profits about $2500 per month on the two older towers and $5000 per month on the new tower.

As a newly married couple the Duggars decided to develop a financial foundation that would allow them to raise a large family together. Their entrepeneural abilities have made this possible. Many families would benefit from financial training by the Duggars.

What a refreshing post. Thank you. I don’t watch this show often, but when I do I come away thinking that I have seen a family that we should emulate. Except for Michelle Duggars’ hopeless lack of style. And then I think again. Michelle Duggar’s “style” is so much better than all the money spent on another Michelle’s so-called, over the top “style” that she flaunts around the White House and the world.

Give me Michelle Duggar’s wardrobe and family any day. They should be the First Family of the USA. They are the family that I would like to see emulated.

God Bless them all their lives.

Absolutely they do.
They actually have to stomp out the homeschooling movement, if their full goals are to be realized.

They can’t have the “ungovernable” in the population - too much trouble, sand in the gears so to speak.

I spend part of each summer cooking/security/handyperson for a local youth organization for young women. The girls are taught first aid and the camp has a rifle range where fire arms safety and shooting skills are taught - along with the usual camping ‘stuff’ (knots and such)

Two years ago I was asked to stage a mock disaster for a capstone event for the camp.

The setup was multitask and was based on a massive wildfire in Anchorage. The brief going in was that the camp AO was now used by the Army Guard as an aid station and logistics point. The girls were to provide such support as as they could while the Army got sorted out. All in all, as realistic as I could make it.

Presented with a ‘busload’ of injured folks - they had to provide
Care
Shelter
Hot Food
with the items provided or scrounged. Adult leaders were forbidden to participate - even from the side lines. THe event was taped for an AAR session.

The groups were told they could have two questions answered by the 'umpire' should the need arise. Several did ask and were asked in return - "Do you want this answered as one of your two questions?" In every case they declined and went back to the exercise.

There were 5 of the girls (all home schooled) who were stunning in their reaction. Focused, task centered, able to gently direct others and with the skills from the classes down cold.

I told the leadership of the organization - “these are your future leaders, make sure they get whatever training you can afford”....

As these youth grow up we can only hope they become the leaders of this Nation....
