(2010) The Worst Movie Year Ever? (Dinosaur Media DeathWatch™)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | July 29, 2010 | Joe Queenan

Posted on 07/29/2010 3:16:29 PM PDT by abb

In the new movie "Inception," Leonardo DiCaprio burrows deep into the subconscious of a self-absorbed plutocrat to plant a powerful idea that will change the world. If the technology used in "Inception" were available in real life, Mr. DiCaprio might burrow into the subconscious of Hollywood plutocrats and plant these paradigm-altering ideas: Stop making movies like "Grown Ups," "Sex and the City 2," "Prince of Persia" and anything that positions Jennifer Aniston or John C. Reilly at the top of the marquee. Stop trying to pass off Shia LaBeouf—who looks a bit like the young George W. Bush—as the second coming of Tom Cruise. Stop casting Gerard Butler in roles where he is called upon to emote. And if "Legion" and "Edge of Darkness" and "The Back-up Plan" and "Hot Tub Time Machine" are the best you can do, stop making movies, period. Humanity will thank you for it.

In a millennium that has thus far produced precious few motion pictures in the same class as "The Godfather," "Jurassic Park," "Casablanca," "Gone with the Wind," "My Fair Lady" and "The Matrix," there is a knee-jerk tendency to throw up one's hands and moan that the current year is the worst in the history of motion pictures. But 2010 very possibly is the worst year in the history of motion pictures. Where once there was "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," there is now "Robin Hood," prince of duds. Where once we could look forward to "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "The Last of the Mohicans," we can now look forward to "Dinner for Schmucks" and "The Last Airbender." This time two years ago we were treated to the ingenious, subversive "Iron Man"; this year we have the insipid, uninspired "Iron Man 2."

Coming soon to a theater near you: absolutely nothing you want to see. Why Hollywood keeps trying to sell us on pointless sequels, lame remakes and the stardom of Shia LaBeouf.

Toy Story 3 was the best of the franchise.

Grown men were crying in our theater.

Interesting. Isn't art (and I do include film making here) supposed to "reflect" its society? Perhaps there's nothing good or interesting or valuable to reflect.

And we've had it with all the films showing the horror, the inhumanity and the simple evil pervasive today.

What to do? What to do?

Screw Hollywood and TV. They support Obama 110%.

Really lame remakes and other s**t.

LOL! Shia LaBeouf - wow he is horrible and nothing to look at. Who is he related to?

What happened to the remake of Wall Street? Did that ever come out or did it die like Blockbuster is dying?

""The Godfather," "Jurassic Park," "Casablanca," "Gone with the Wind," "My Fair Lady" and "The Matrix,""

How did "Jurassic Park" get in that list? Other than the special effects, that movie was a complete turd. Utterly unwatchable.

Saw Inception last week ... it was fantastic.

A-Team was good. I liked Robin Hood and Shutter Island quite a bit. The kids liked Toy Story 3 a lot.

It has been a horrific year for movies - just a year-long crapfest. I would take exception to Robin Hood. While it wasn't terrific, it was far from bad, especially in comparison to some of the other, more successful films this year.

Last year wasn't much better - Up In the Air, Star Trek and The Hangover were the only movies worth renting, much less actually going to the theater to see.

Any article about “bad” movies hat lists “The Last of the Mohicans” as an example of a “good” movie should be severely ridiculed.

"Pretty much the only good movies being made nowadays are foreign films."

It's even been a bad year for foreign language films. The Secret in Their Eyes and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are about the only one I'd recommend seeing - although TGWTDT is not for the faint of heart as it has some shockingly graphic scenes.

I saw "Inception". While I'm not a Leonardo DiCaprio fan, the film was riveting. However, I only see about 3 movies per year, if that. Too much on DVD and 'classic' movie channels to waste my money going to some lame Hollyweird film that disappoints. However, 'Inception' didn't disappoint.

I went to watch that movie one night because it looked like it might be charming. The minute it started, I smelled an anti-capitalist propaganda movie coming and turned it off. I am sick to death of that kind of gratuitous crap in Hollywood films and TV shows. Screw em. I have better things I can do with my time than be lectured to and propagandized about the values of marxism. Hollywood simply doesn’t understand me, my family or our values. The last straw for us were all the horrible movies they made about our troops during Bush’s administration trying to undermine the war. No more. I can’t stand Hollywood!

Meanwhile, I’ll wait for Atlas Shrugged to be made honestly and go see that when it comes out.

Win..Win..Win.

I have to admit that this year has been dismal in the movie industry. I did enjoy Shutter Island, and I thought that it was a good movie. I watched Clash of the Titans last night, and I was disappointed. I am trying to think of an outstanding movie this year, and nothing comes to mind.
There are two sorts of movies that I will not watch. First, I am tired of anti-American movies. Second, I am tired of macho chick movies with the girls being the bad ass.
