Brutality in Cameroon: The Barbaric Practice of Breast Ironing
David Horowitz's NewsReal Blog ^ | July 29, 2010 | Jenn Q. Public

Posted on 07/29/2010 8:41:22 PM PDT by TheHawksNest

Little girls in Cameroon are being betrayed by their own mothers. Using piping hot stones, women “iron” their pubescent daughters’ breasts to destroy any visible sign of budding womanhood. Some of the victims of this torture are as young as nine.

The scars are horrific.

Women say it is love that drives them to brutalize their daughters this way, that they just want to protect young girls from being raped or becoming pregnant at an early age. Instead, they end up with daughters who are both mutilated and pregnant. Not only are the girls disfigured, but many suffer infection, pain, psychological distress, and damage to the breast tissue that can cause lactation difficulties and perhaps even breast cancer.

As with female genital mutilation, girls are having their bodies violated in unthinkable ways in order to control their sexuality. Why bother to address a high teen pregnancy rate with education about sex and birth control when you can scald away the flesh from your daughter’s chest? And of course, it’s easier to blame little girls for being too enticing than it is to repair a culture in which rape and assault are prevalent.

Please watch the documentary embedded below for more on this cruelty. (Note: The video contains some nudity.)

If the rock isn’t too hot for the mom to pick up with her hands, it SURE AIN’T DOING ANYTHING to the girl

The thermal conductivity of stone is low, around 2, compared to say steel, which is about 20. After watching the video, it appears the mother heats the flat side of the stone at the edge of the flames, while holding the curved side. If she moves the stone directly from the fire to the girl's chest, she could easily burn the child while still being able to hold the stone. Only the flat surface would be very hot, which the rest of the stone would be at best, warm to very warm.

Why, please indulge us with your knowledge of life in Western Africa’s urban areas.

But hey maybe they are actually safer from rape in those areas, after all I don’t know how many U.N peacekeeping units are stationed there.

I’ll tell you what those moms should be ironing.

To heck with ironing. Two stones with the flat sides clapped together vigorously with the problem between them, would likely suffice.

My point is that many cultures modify the bodies of their children. I’m not in favor of any type of mutilation - especially of children.

No one here would do this to their children, yet circumcision is considered a norm.

I am not saying either are right.

I am only saying that this blog/film was clearly meant to incite.

I have breasts. They are sensitive. I can farkin well guarantee you that pressing a hot iron to them or hey even a heated stone to them would hurt a hell of a lot more than using a curling iron on my hair. Even a quick accidental burn with a curling iron would hurt less.

Tell you what why don’t you ask the significant female in your life if you can press down on her bare breasts with a hot rock or better yet ask her permission to do this to your daughter or to her daughter. Though to be truly representative of this practice the daughter should be just starting to develop.

I feel certain she will say yes after all it is not much more than curling hair, now is it?

You didn’t watch the vid DID YOU??

Not before that statment, but I won't revise the statement. Just because that particular mother used a different technique, essentially that stone has low thermal conductivity, but a high heat capacity, doesn't mean that other mothers, perhaps in different villages don't insulate their hands in other ways. A latter post provides a quote indicating some women do use towels to protect their hands, from a stone that has been heated in boiling water. (That probably wont' burn anyone though, but it ain't going to be comfortable against the tender regions of the skin.

As someone who worked around some pretty hot equipment (making rubber belting products) I can tell you that your hands, especially if they are callused can take a lot more heat than other places. Your chest for example. Or even the sides of your elbow joint (As I know from personal experience, including some scars that took a decade or two to completely fade away) To this day, and it's been 38 years, I have no problems with holding plates that the waitresses use a towel to move from their tray to the table. Blows their minds. :)

I did not write that quote. I would suppose it is referring to the fact that in urban areas there is more exposure to criminals.

Here’s a hint for ya...now go look up “specific heat”.

That was the reference to "heat capacity", whereas I should have said "specific heat capacity." Heh, it's been a long time since I had thermo.. but I did have it.

Granite has about twice the specific heat as iron, but it's a much better insulator, by a factor of about 10, so one part of the rock can be quite hot, while the other part is still not burning hot. It takes about twice as much energy per unit mass to raise the temperature of granite than the same rise would take for iron.

BTW, you do know that there are several kinds of specific heat, don't you? And all sometimes go by slightly different names, depending on the field. Engineers tend to use slightly different nomenclature than say physicists. Makes working together a bit confusing at times.

BTW, I agree it's propaganda piece, but that doesn't mean that it's not mostly true. All the best propaganda is.

Do know what letter/symbol engineers use for "voltage"? Or what they, especially electrical engineers, use for the square root of -1?

6:35 in the film the Mama says the stone is not to warm.

This is pure claptrap propaganda, designed to have you hand over control to the government.

They toss in ONE pic of a scarred girl earlier to make you horrified.

The rest of them gals had normal african breasts
